you can always count on an mtv stream not working when they put it up, at least for me they never do.

I've heard some not so good things about this album. I really liked Sing the Sorrow, so hopefully this won't disappoint. And I'm too lazy to sit at my computer and listen to a stream, so can anyone give me an idea of how it sounds?

If you can take the time to type a few sentences but not listen to a stream of a band you are into and would rather take someone else's opinion, you are retarded.

To me...it's kind of where Sing the Sorrow left off. It has the feel of that album with a few different elements and more effects. I really enjoy it.

you wasted space to attempt to call someone retarded instead of actually answering their question. dont be a fool, and just answer their question.

This band does not cease to amaze me; every new album is testament to how well this band continues to mature and what a genuine pleasure it always is to hear them.

i'm not going to praise this as their greatest album or anything, but i'm not going to destroy it with no real logic or reasoning, a la everyone who hates this cd right now.

obviously, this is a different sound. but every afi cd is a different sound. this is just a further leap than previous progressions. however, it is still logical, by following their shifts in style from as far back as their origins, each cd became less of a punk or hardcore band, and more of a rock band. here, they are essentially a rock band. catchy hooks and choruses, rock song structures, an overall friendliness to the radio. on that end, a disappointment, as one could interpret this as afi catering to their record label, and not to their own taste. however, even with the now-very-apparant cure influence, one knows they are being true to themselves. case in point: the afi ep, in which the band covers the cure - hanging garden. they've always been fans, hunter even had a more pop-oriented side project (details escape me at the moment).

regardless of how this compares to old afi, this cd is catchy as hell, and though the songs may not be as strong as others, musically or lyrically, the sheer catchiness makes up for it. i listened to the cd approximately 45 times in the past week or two. it grows on you. and to be fair, i'm not a blind afi fanboy. i was disappointed with sing the sorrow, and originally, decemberunderground infuriated me. i was appalled at their efforts. though, with time, the songs grew on me, and i saw to appreciate them as catchy pop/rock songs, and not to expect them to be punk anthems. with this outlook, and an open mind, this cd is very entertaining.

i saw someone say something along the lines of "listen to this for what it is, not for what you want them to be." words to live by. sure, i'd love it if the radio put out music i liked more than the occasional song or two, but that's not what it's about. i'm into alternative music and i should know better than to expect songs catering to my taste on the radio. likewise, afi wanted to make a rock record and we should appreciate and understand that this is where they wanted to head. they haven't sold out or abandoned their fans, they may even be even closer to their fans after the huge mystery/hunt they had going on.

so, a long entry for one short point: not punk, good album.

i'm not done listening yet, but so far here are my thoughts:

davey shouldnt scream. ever again. he has a good voice, but it a miserable scream

the synths are a nice change, but overused

EVERY SONG HAS THE SAME FORMULA. This has bugged me about AFI for a long time. The songs, though they sound different, all follow the same blueprint.

im on song eight. thus far, its a dissapointment. AFI was my favorite band in the world a few years ago, but i guess i grew out of them. This album doesnt seem to be pulling me back.

Miss Murder sounds like AFI's answer to Green Day's "Holiday". Pretty strong album though, if you were able to stomach the direction that this band has been heading in.

fuck... i'm actually enjoying this album. didn't think i would... "the missing frame" is my favorite track.

a little off topic, but has anyone else noticed how dead pop-punk is? Yellowcard, Good Charlotte, NFG, etc... have already peaked. nobody gives a shit about that stuff anymore. a lot of the mainstream "punk" type bands now days are incorporating an 80's sound to their music. i guess that's what is cool now days.

I'll give it another chance when it comes out, but right now, its a big dissapointment. I loved every disc they've put out, and each change they've gone through. But after the beast that was STS, this just feels like a disjointed effort of bsides thrown together.

Maybe it will strike me better on a different listen. Who knows.

NFG will be back strong this fall, and I'm sure Relient K is cooking up something nice! As for Yellowcard and Good Charlotte, not a fan, but their latest efforts have been the worst and least appealing to date.

On topic...I enjoy Decemberunderground!

80's music died for a reason. Stop trying to bring it back AFI and for the love of god davey cut your flock of seagulls haircut.

I'll never get tired of saying good things about this album.
That's a cold, winter-like, electronic, poetic, danceable, intimate, personal, loveable masteripece.
AFI made an evolution. For good.

i think davey should scream. he does it well, i don't see whats wrong with it. if you ever liked AFI before this album, then you'd know they were more influenced by hardcore back in the day. also he had some of it on the last album (death of season, dancing through sunday?). plus, previous albums such as black sails had a bit of a rougher vocal styling. its been coming, embrace change...how boring would it be if they were the same? i'd call them a bigger 'sellout' if they sounded exactly like the last album.
