everything is subjective to you, therefore having genre names is pointless and we can talk about any band anywhere. which would be annoying because then we'd always be talking about P!ATD

Getting technical, real screamo isn't really a genre. It's all just emo (hardcore) music with roots deriving from such bands as Rites of Spring, Embrace, Heroin, Indian Summer, etc...

When someone refers to real screamo, they're talking more grindy, screamy stuff like saetia, orchid, llbnf, jffb, coc, ctts, etc.

Listen to Orchid, Saetia, or Joshua Fit For Battle, Jeromes Dream, Song of Zarathustra, Reversal Of Man, Waifle but the genre pathetically called "Screamo" started with Honeywell, Antioch Arrow, Heroin, Angel Hair, Unbroken, Struggle, Captain Beefheart, The MC5, Still Life, Get Fucked

My personal favorite screamo band is probably Mara'Akate, which members went on to form Phoenix Bodies, fucking emo violence!

Some other good screamo bands to get into are Usurp Synapse, Drago Miette, Textbook Traitors, Combatwoundedvetereran, Sailboats--although you can only find one demo because of a freak car accident, Neil Perry, La Quiete, Majority Rule, Pg 99, Love Lost But Not Forgotten, Bucket Full Of Teeth, Swing Kids, Portraits of Past, The Now, Yaphett Kotto, Hassan I Sabbah, City Of Caterpillar, Welcome The Plague Year, The Apoplexy Twist Orchestra, Racebannon, Kaos Pilot, Wolves, Transistor Transistor, Enkephalin, Tyranny Of Shaw, Louse Cyphre, Raein, Corn On Macabre, Clikitat Ikatowi, Ampere, Funeral Diner, Mohinder, Indian Summer, Yage, Off Minor, Amanda Woodward, Daniel Striped Tiger, Daitro, Arse Moreira, Kidcrash, I Hate Myself, The Assistant, This Ship Will Sink, Takaru, Shikari, The Spirit Of Versailles, Death Of Anna Karina, Moss Icon, Kite Flying Society, Suicide Note, Jesus Project, Malady, Force Fed Glass, Hareste, Die Trying, oh and i forgot ENVY

Well, it should be a place for people to hate on shitty music (as should any website that is devoted to music), and in the process finding the few elitists who actually listen to something that doesn't so closely resemble being fucked in the ear by a black guy.

So until we've castrated everyone that listens to music that really, really shouldn't exist, I say let's fuck those tools up.

Yeah, that puts him at 17, I started listening to orchid and shit at like 15.

Pretty much the same as me. I've only been into non-shitty music for about 2 years, I'm a pretty newly minted skramz fan I guess.

do any of you remember the first band you heard that really got you into screamo?

Wow, Owls!, CTTS, Spirit of Versailles, Stop it!! and few others were in my library for awhile (on the recommendation of some people on another forum). They were alright but I wasn't too much into them at the time, I was 14 then and couldn't really understand why anyone would want to listen to that music. And one day I randomly came across Suis La Lune's Quiet! Pull the Strings and La Quiete's album, and we know euroskramz is much more accessible than the rest and it was history from there.

Nothing. CTTS last released something in 2003. Apparently this new stuff will only be an EP, and there is no date for it. I'm betting sometime around 2014 it will be released. It'll probably suck anyhow, so don't hold your breath.

Your favorite band is mwY...

Sleepwalkers Guide is the balls.

Several observations here, namely that I enjoy both of these bands (mwY and CTTS). Sure, they are musically poles apart and they are not bands I would usually listen to in the same evening, but they both rock and for different reasons. Also, Sleepwalker's Guide surely ties with Shifting by FD for best "SHIT I THOUGHT THE SONG HAD FINISHED BUT THEY STARTED YELLING AGAIN" pause.

omg your gonna sit there and put every band that hardly anyone has heard off.
Well at least i havent heard of any of them
Silverstein is awesome who cares what they are.

Also, Silverstein are cool. The band I mean; not their music. They have legitimately indiemo influences and are really nice people. You like their music obviously, and that too is cool. I am not fronting, a few of their songs were the axis of my world for several months quite a few years back. They are all adept at their given "tasks" and you cannot fault them on the friendliness front, but they are in no way screamo / emo. The only stuff of theirs that even HINTED at their emo influences are the songs on Summar's Stellar Gaze.

They are huge fans of Mineral and you can hear it in their first EP. Whatever, if you want to believe they are "screamo" believe it. They are popular alternative rock and have been since their first album.

Also, the bands he / she mentioned are legit and you have not heard of them because you are choosing (though lack of action / apathy, which is still a choice and unequivocably the worst type of choice) to be fed what major and large "independent" labels want you to hear, and see, because as we all know the aesthetic of bands is the largest factor in whether they sell merchandise. (Music? Nah, don't worry about that, merchandise is what music is about).

Look, dude. I haven't heard of them bands either, but at least I'm gonna check them out.

Fucking good attitude.

You And I

Fuck yes, one of the best ever. When We Were One, that was pretty much THE breakup song for me. Like, lying on the high school football field crying at 3am breakup. That band were / are / will forever be so awesome. Forever Lasts A Moment, another gem. Their first 7" is really slept on, so raw and adolescent. The more adolescent the better.

Honeywell, early screamo emo. So harsh it hurts.

Does anybody else not dig Raein? I can not get into them which is weird because I like "comparable" bands like Daïtro and Mihai and Amanda Woodward and even La Quiete but I find Raein kinda unexciting.

say something is my favorite song they did

"Did you make love or did you fuck her?"

Amazing song.

Outro off Ohio is still my favorite, because I've listened to it over 200 times and still can not get all of the spoken word lyrics, and because it is just so overwhelming and beautiful. Possibly the most heartfelt spoken word song I have heard, it's just mindblowing.

do any of you remember the first band you heard that really got you into screamo?

Silverstein. Call the bomb squad.

i always recommend Neil Perry when topics like this come up, because imo theyre the best screamo band ever.

them or Raein, who have taken over my cd player atm.

Neil Perry have some of the best lyrics ever, and easily the equal-best song titles ever. Any band who disguise heart-ache with loads of bitter sarcasm, that's emo.

So I browsed the first couple pages of this thread and decided to check out Joshua Fit For Battle and You And I.
Awesome stuff.
When stuff like this exists, why does Shakira?

Not everybody would like emo even if they were exposed to it. That's fine. Besides, most people are dumb, comparatively. Emo appeals to the elite, and that is why it is a relatively small epoch in the annals of music history.

The Spirit Of Versailles and Anasarca are WAYYY too slept on, but I cannot for the life of me fathom why nobody has mentioned the two best emo bands ever...

I'm not really a fan of Raein, I will admit "Tigersuit" is one catchy fucking song, but all their other stuff just blends into one continual mediocre song for me. But Raein helped birth what I like to refer to as the "myspace screamo" age or skramz. Kids who would rather download an album rather than order it (of course this only applies to records still in print) and who seem to be part of a culture based on the web as opposed to real life (this involves trading mp3's, records, joining bands etc. etc.). Not that there is anything wrong with that, it seems to be a sign of the times.

Neil Perry are one of my all-time favorite bands, the lyrics though...If it were any other group I would not like the lyrics, but NP presents them with a level of intensity and passion that I haven't really heard in any other band.

Can't be worse than where I live. I don't even live IN LA, I live in a predominantly asian suburb engulfed in a predominantly asian valley about 12-15 miles Northeast of LA. We have a grand total of............ one band in my city. And thats a shitty asian scenester myspacecore band.

I'm guilty of first statement. However, although I do want to support the bands that I like, I don't think it's right that the only way to do so is through financial obligations. I simply don't have the money to do so. I try instead to support bands by sharing them with the people that are willing to listen (far and few in between, try telling your average 16 year old that real emo is Moss Icon).

I was just joking around.

I'm trying to think of some good screamo to tell you, but I honestly think you'd probably know most of them.

There's this band Cowboys Are Indians that are pretty marvelous. They don't have an LP out yet, but they hopefully will soon.

http://www.myspace.com/cowboysareindians

Cassettes on Fire from FL. They have an LP split with Cowboys^^^ sometime soon.

http://www.myspace.com/cassettesfl

I'm in a band called Alessa. We're okay. We have a 7" coming out soon (if all goes well)

http://www.myspace.com/alessanh

I know you probably know Isodora Crane, but their singular screamo release has been doing it for me lately. If you don't have it I'd be happy to provide it digitally. If you have it/know it, I'd suggest listening to it like 9 billion times over and over again.

Hope that's good, I tried not to reccommend the "classics," because that just gets obvious and annoying after a while

I wrote a letter to Heartattack a few years back defending the internet as a means to help form a community for people who didn't otherwise live in an area with a fertile scene, so I think it can have its value there. But kids who just DL shit to stick on their myspace and don't give back to the bands/scene in any way = bummer. I fear that somewhere along the line the broader diy community has/will lose any distinction between the two, which would be sad because I know, from my point of view at least, if it weren't for the internet I (and many others where I live) would never have been able to track down our miniscule, insular little scene (as it was at the time) to get involved.

I don't think so because it's quite easy to tell the difference between someone who's really into DIY and someone who's only into it as an excuse to be pretentious or whatever. Usually you can tell because their tastes fit a specific mold, yet lack the idiosyncrasies that would come from actually listening to the music.

For example, i know people who claim to be into skramz. Their favorite screamo bands are Orchid and Circle Takes The Square. They only really jock those two bands, but if you ask them about something that's less critically acclaimed like say Jerome's Dream, they will just make up some stock answer about why they suck/not know who they are. In places where there are shows, you'll never see them there.

I think we'll always be able to tell. it might be harder over the internet, but within the community in real life, it's still too easy. just think about how they act, new people, or people who lack the ability to go to shows, tend to be pretty chill about everything and are accepting of others wanting to educate them. fake kids throw on their battle armor and start fighting with everyone else. ex: dylan1177

they also butchered chaos is me in french. but i hate Nietzsche so it's all cool.

but i mean, a song about foucault? bad ass. they're the only band that's ever covered the topic of being into philosophy and yet having to put up with psudeo-intellectual poseurs which is something i deal with all the time.

they make fun of themselves for being into philosophers on 'Tigers'. I think the self-consciousness is what made their philosophical jerkings-off tolerable.

Gatefold is pretty much how I feel about everything. The urge to be confident, but being afraid of pretentiousness and cutting oneself down.

Plus, I mean, if you look at their earlier works, they have lyrics like "I miss your arms around me, if I only knew this would be our last kiss." They know that, for that, they really don't have the right to spit on other screamo bands.

You mean Underground Obit? In which case, yes I did, and no, I do not remember people getting mad at me. I just didn't have the Internet for 6 months which was probably good because I was listening to wayyy to much Closure and Hour Of The Star.

The Khayembii Communique are simply enough one of the emo bands, I have what I believe to be their complete disco. (around 8-songs) and while I don't listen to it all that often, I'm always happy when I decided to give them a listen.

They actually had 10 songs. Now, I will try and remember which ones where on what.

A Year And An Ocean, AM 1200, How To Change Addiction And The Thirteeth were, I THINK, the songs on the s/t 7".

The others on the split with The Vidablue were The Des Moines Tapes, Better Times Are Better Left Dead, Lacking and Death Of An Aspiring Icon, I THINK.

The other two songs they recorded were On The Pulse and Dogs And Bees, I assume they were released on a demo tape.

The band was briefly called The Marx Brothers.

I cannot explain how fucking much I love this band.

The only other band that means as much to me as Khayembii are Mineral.

You and I, Portrait and Anasarca all rate highly though. Same with Owltian, Weep, Candyland Carcrash, Rachel.

What about that Ghostofthepast guy?

He knew his shit for sure, far more so than me but he was a total dick criticising everyone and being a huge genre nazi.

Spot on. Orchid were nothing AMAZING musically, I mean, I loved their ferocity, but their socio-political shit was off the hookkkk.

If people are not aware of the significance of Snow Delay At The Frankfurt School, wayk da fuk up!

That school produced the most influential and radical thinkers of last century. Viva Adorno. Viva Heidegger.

Foucault is some of the heaviest shit you could ever attempt to read. Most of his books are impenetrable, the only people I can think of that were more hifalutin were Derrida (kind of an in joke though), Wittgenstein and Hegel. Nietzsche is rad for being accessible. Foucault's lectures on Power are his easiest works I find, and so on point.

Honeywell>all

I would not go that far but they were very innovative and apparently VERY angry at the world. Then again, so were Mohinder and Heroin and Angel Hair. I like Heroin the most of of that vein of emo.
