View Full Version : Doesn't that new Daughtry song sound like Anberlin's 'Retrace'?!

I was at work the other day and found myself singing along to the radio. All i could hear was the music and I assumed it was Anberlin's 'Retrace' until I realized the lyrics i was singing weren't the lyrics being sung on the radio. After the song the announcer said it was the new Chris Daughtry song. I was kind of freaked out because everything seemed to match up (structure, chords, timing, melody, vocals and such..) with a few minor differences. Has anyone else noticed this??? I wonder if Anberlin knows.

What is the Daughtry song?

Edit: Never mind, just looked it up and listened. I think you're right, they sound very similar.

Anberlin > Daughtry.
I think I have to check this out.

It does. I could see him singing the Retrace chorus instead of whatever his is. What really struck me as similar, though, was the chord progression when you could hear it better in the beginning. It sounds like the same chords used for (*Fin) and The Unwinding Cable Car.

eta: Maybe it was just the guitar they used.

Anberlin > Daughtry.

Do you really even have to say that? It's just assumed.

Retrace is one of the worst songs Anberlin has ever written so it figures that a Daughtry song would be similar to it.

I used to see Daughtry in NC before he went to American Idol, when his band was called 'Absent Element' ... I know his music now is pretty generic radio/mainstream rock...but he's got a really really good voice. I wish he wouldn't have done so well on Idol so he would have taken Fuel up on their offer to be their singer.

Anyways, I see a little bit of similarity, but Anberlin still kicks ass, though Retrace is one of the weaker songs on their new album.

New Surrender in general was just a huge disappointment to me. I really like Disappear, The Resistance and that b-side(Said and Done) but that's about it.

Yes.

Also you guys are all deaf. Retrace is a song that's written with one of the most generic chord progressions of all time. Everyone, literally everyone uses the same. song. structure.

It's certainly a step down from Cities, but I enjoy it; then again, I've always had a soft spot for radio-friendly pop goodness. "Haight Street" is such a fun summer jam.

Me too. It's possibly my favorite on the album.

I don't see the similarity...

I wouldn't use that phrase for most bands discussed around here...Retrace may not be a very creative song, but that doesn't warrant a label of "complete shit".

hostel people... you would all kill each other if you had the chance... well i have to agree as a guitarist that those chords together are very much overly used! a few other anberlin songs have it ...as the chorus for Cute Without the 'E' i think!
