We Came as Romans- To Plant a Seed
Record Label: Equal Vision Records
Release date: November 3rd, 2009
So first things first: We Came as Romans has set the bar for the genre we know so well as hardcore (these days it's genericore). The first release To Plant a Seed has been leaked about 800,000 times online. I was lucky enough to find it. I have since taken it out.
Under the wing of Joey Sturgis (The Devil Wears Prada, At The Throne of Judgment, A Plea For Purging) this album had high expectations for all fans, and people looking for something new to come out of Foundation Studios. Sturgis has let me down.
The album opens up with reverberation on snare hits, straight into a For The Fallen Dreams-esque pre-breakdown. We all know what those sound like. Ringouts, rolls on the tom/bass, melodic notes on guitar, going from high to low. You know, the good stuff. But the good stuff has indeed gone sour with programming. So much programming that the music has a new and improved fake sound using sythesizers for just about everything.
We Came as Romans set the bar on To Plant a Seed with bland vocals, switching back and forth from shrill screams and growls, to very a contrasting (if I may) singing. The balance creates the perfect equilibrium for the liking of our ears, first of all. Secondly, Kyle Pavone can sing his heart out I guess, but he could use a bit less auto-tune, of course. You all saw that one coming. He uses lines like "My future started with the first note that I ever played; the first note that was ever sang," which is pretty inspiring. The lyricism is great for the album, and it reaches out to kids. The music however does not reach me.
I'm not saying that every song sounds the same. But every song is pretty much similar to this one; they give you something more in each song. Something to add onto what you have already heard (basically this goes for every other Rise-esque band as well). Whether it's a melodic breakdown with auto-tuned vocals or a brutal man with growling set to the next level, To Plant a Seed is a filler CD of '09.
Anything Rise Records, Joey Sturgis, The Devil Wears Prada.

;-) nice review, greatly enjoyed the album
You write with a pretty biased ear. I enjoy the screaming vocals, but the singing is a joke. So much auto-tune, this guy can't sing at all if he needs that much effects... this is a trend that needs to end.
the release is pretty decent, the vocals kill it

Well this isnt really a biased ear, Kyle Can Sing live.
i've seen him and he doesnt even use it live, joey for the life of me love's to do that for most of the band's album's he record's with, so blame joey, but im tired of kyle getting dissed, they need to record with somebody else next year or whenever they make another album/ep,

Thanks. I had to use WE CAR as my first review. It's hard not to be a bit biased when the album blows your mind, hahah. But still. I loved it. And Kyle's effects are at least ten times more dumbed down than that of Prada, or Attack Attack especially.

That last part was mostliy for the other dude. Ha.
lol listen to your new fav. album again. Believe that is an unbelievable amount of autotune, reverb, and a whole mess of effects on his voice. its so blatant that almost every vocal melody he ceates sound the same because the computer is generating the same effect. I've seen their live videos, the kid can't sing as well as u wish he could

86 percent ? Get outa here.. More rehashed metalcore for scene kids..The Vocals remind me of In fear and faith,Of Mice and men,I see stars,Attack Attack. I pass on this.
KennyDRomans
11/19/09, 06:25 AM
Actually he does sing as well as i wish i could, i've seen three time's and he's been improving, but meh, to one his own, i still like them, it's so good to see them progress from 2006

11/19/09, 06:32 AM
Of mice is men is so generic just regular screamo, no synth, they sound like a bland Attack attack!, attack attack are a guilty listen. and in fear and faith is the only good comparison, both band's have nice use of synth/piano In my honest opinion,

to those that say he can actually sing, you are flat out wrong... i saw them play earlier this year with the chariot and oh, sleeper for the WCAR release party and they kept asking the sound tech to turn the samples "all the way up" during their set so that they could cover up his terrible voice... autotune doesnt protect you live, plain and simple...

what it is about this band people don't like? they are amazing musicians and write their music for a good reason. without a doubt one of the better bands in the genre

These guys are good. Kyle can sing. And Dave is a good vocalist. And they are some of the nicest guys I've met.
(Oh, and being an elitist is not a good thing. Actually, it's annoying. Calling a band bad, just because a lot of people like them doesn't make you right, and calling people dumb scene kids and stuff doesn't make you either.)

11/20/09, 06:22 AM
I like this band... but I have no idea what point he was trying to get across. That WCAR should be classified as wintercore? Or that he's proud of himself for finding an album that leaked 800,000 times?

Why do people get so defensive when someone doesnt like an album they like? Some people think this band is godly, some find it generic. Just let it go. This review was very biased though. I'm still waiting for someone to write a fair evaluation of this album so it can be talked about objectively.

11/20/09, 07:02 AM
I like the album but the autotune is a little too much. Its much more noticeable here than on TDWP. The album would have been better if they stuck more with the screaming and less shitty singing (i.e. songs like To Plant a Seed, Dreams, Intentions, Broken Statues). I just wish it was more brutal.
Also, the beginning of An Ever Growing Wonder makes me laugh. "I am the maaannn in the mirrrrror". Sounds straight out of a Michael Jackson song.
Don't get me wrong I still love this record but those are my grievances with it.

While they may play their music well and write catchy songs, It's all been done before and still being done by all of their peers. I can't really speak for anybody else but that's my main reasoning for not liking this band. Everything that was described in this review is something that hot topic metal bands have been doing for the past 3 years. It's extremely generic music, plain and simple.
Hell, even the recording is exactly the same as every other attack attack, tdwp, of mice of men, we came as romans bullshit.

I've seen youtube videos and the singer actually sounds like he can cut it, which makes his use of auto-tune even more baffling and frustrating. The creativity score's far too high, this style has been done to death.

haha, not really, i listen to all kind's of music, im not a teeny bopper =) My list of music ranges from nightwish, manchester orchestra, circa survive, closure in moscow, the marts volta, rammestein, then keane or muse, and so on and so on <3 that opinion made me lol <3

and i was trying to quote that guy who said we'd be pissed if he wrote a review by them, we came as roman's, are not by far anything original, they just do thing's a bit more better then the band's they're compared to and quite personally one of the best band's to come out of michigan, not do i think the could improve? yes i do i think they have the workings to do great in the melodic metalcore scene. or whatever they're in XD

whatever, opinions are opinions. But there is skill evident in the music. I am not saying We Came As Romans are not generic (because they ARE), but they are on the better end of the generic spectrum. They play their style very well.

that was supposed to be quoted, but yeah, i dont care much for opinions, i wonder if somebody's did a review for brand new's daisy album
I suppose you were talking to me, I think you didn't get what I meant.
I didn't say people shouldn't listen to new music, just that to some people, some genres will never be overplayed.
for me, that would be heavier music with screams and clean vocals (had to put it that way, or els it would sound like <random word>core) and acoustic music.

for some reason when I picked up this cd online, I gave it a listen and the certain aspects of *epic-ness* (for lack of a better word) just reminded me of somesort of raging storm with the clash of dave, and kyles voice, you get winter. Something beautiful yet dangerous.. Good band. And the 800,000 = exagerration.

enter shikari uses a korg electribe for basically all the sounds they make. its a definite drum and bass feel. to plant a seed is more vibrant feeling synth, with even some classical violin synth, etc.

well other than a korg is just a brand of a synthesizer, pretty much all you told me really was nothing. they just have their "key boards" set to a different settings so they obvious sound nothing alike. I am so sorry that i even wasted your time on the difference between these two band who sound alot alike.

They're not a bad band, you have to realise that the over processed sound is what they were going for. The dude can actually sing, you do understand that all autotune does is level your voice so you still have to be able to hit the notes first....Anyway I really like the guitar parts in some of the songs, a little bit repetitive but well done. It's good for what it is, it's just not the raw post-hardcore sound everyone is used to. Think of it as mainstream or poppy screamo

You don't have to hit jack shit in autotune. You can sing a completely wrong note and fix it, or even raise it straight out of your vocal range. And why would anyone go for an over processed sound?
Imma have to give this album a listen to see what all the back and forth bitching is about. "Wintercore" lulz
EDIT: I'm listening to it now and wow, the autotune is just disappointing. It just sucks any sincerity out of the dudes voice and feels to robotic. Other than that, it's pretty generic sounding. In a vacuum, this album wouldn't be so bad, but it fails to stand out in a genre of bands that just don't stand out.

If we reviewed it, you might cry. You're like the only person - well, ok, maybe one of 10,000 teeny boppers on here who like this awful awful band.
I really am starting to get sick of the fact that every time someone honestly reviews something an asshole like yourself has to try and start shit. If you don't like the band or genre don't even approach a fan's review you already know what your gonna get.
You and many other people should learn to respect other peoples musical tastes. I actually like this band, so I guess that means I wear skinny jeans?
I'd like to see you review this album to hear more of your elitist opinion.

Please excuse me for the immature comment I made at the time. I did not have my name as my username at the time, and, well, I guess we all know how easy it is to write idiotic things when we're hiding behind a pseudonym on the internet.
When I made that post, I was simply exasperated at the state of the music scene and how, in my opinion, a band like WCAR that makes music so derivative and uninspired (in terms of creativity, anyway) could so easily garner popularity while other more deserving bands withered away. In the end, I guess a lot of us on this site are just tired of the path the scene is headed down, and we get loud and obnoxious with our complaining.
But the beauty of this site is that everyone has input. Do I respect your taste? You bet. Do I have a right to raise an objection? Yes, and I will do so if I feel it's needed. Looking back, however, I wish I hadn't done so in such a jerk fashion, so once again, please forgive me for that.

member rating of 55% is wayyyyy to low, this is one of the best albums out there for this type of music right now, catchy singing lines, brutal breakdowns and screams, i dont know how you cant like this, its soooooo good

It's either this or Attack Attack! So, call me crazy... I choose this. I think it's excellent. Do I think that automatically makes it a creative piece of art? Not at all. Like Our Last Night's "We Will All Evolve" it works because of capable vocalists (the screamer more than anything in We Came As Romans) and dumb fun brutal guitars. Like junk food, I know it's not good for me, but I like it regardless.
And good review, dude. You said what you came to say, and you backed it up. Don't let people on here bother you... I never have.

you dah man.
i really like this album. the spastic breakdown in broken statues makes me jizz.
but are you saying that "we will all evolve" is a guilty pleasure-esque album like wcar and attack attack!?
i think that album is very creative. frequent melody and riff changes that don't sound forced, i love it. they're pretty talented musicians.

I don't care what anyone thinks of this album, but I still love it. It also does remind me of winter time.
