View Full Version : American Commercials

I never watch TV, so as you can imagine, I never really get to see any commercials either. This is now a problem, as I have to write a paper for my American Studies class and I have no idea what commercial to choose at all. I'll post the description of the topic below, and hopefully you guys will be able to help me out:
Select a television, film, or internet-based advertisement. Consider the extent to which the advertisement promotes or references specifically American values and ideas we have been discussing in class. Analyze the extent to which ad “sells” the product in relation to its “Americanness.” You are free to choose any advertisement that fits the requirement of the essay, but your advertisement must be viewable on a non-subscription (fee or registration based) website.
Just to give you an idea, so far we have covered The Last of the Mohicans, Ben Franklin's Biography, Mary Rowlandson, etc.
Hopefully someone will be able to think of a good commercial! :-)

Any Budwiser or Ford/Dodge/GMC Truck commmerical would work

This brings attention to consumerism, Americans' addiction to debt, the plight of the average worker taking up minimum wage jobs, and the ability to write a catchy 30 second jingle.

If you guys think of who McCain and Palin were trying to attract during the '08 election, then you'd have a pretty good idea as to what we have covered in class -- you know, the "average Joe" who has great "Christian values," etc. We have pretty much been talking about that type of American mentality.

... ok.
but that attitude seems to be the "mccain/palin '08" esque, selling on the virtue of "americanness" example that eda seems to be going for.

I wrote a paper on this commercial a few years ago for English class about the importance of personal appearance in the workplace.

I think it is pretty awesome as far as TV ads go. Rather watch that commercial then one of the 18 trillion beer commercials that are on

Those don't make me want to buy levis jeans, but damn they are great pieces of art. Especially the America one. I like that is an actual recording of walt whitman.

I really like that commercial but I think she's talking about blue collar, red state, American values. I don't really see the new levi jeans commercial representing those kind of values at all.

Those Levi's commercials seem to me like bastardizations of all Whitman stood for (I mean, they look cool and Whitman being the narrator is cool...but come on). They're like the Chris Farley ads to me.

haha, not a problem, i just didn't expect the commercial's merits to be judged on anything except relevancy to eda's request.
