We've got individual threads for television, movies and video games, and musicals absolutely deserve their own.
I've been recently discovering that I can fall in love with a cast recording without actually having seen the musical itself. The Spring Awakening soundtrack is so great, sad I missed the chance to see it when it was here a few weeks ago. Any other recommendations of cast recordings you can enjoy without having seen the musical itself?

Rent and Wicked I've seen, but anyone should be able to like their recordings.
Chicago too.
Those are probably pretty obvious, oh well.

Also I just went to see Rock of Ages last weekend and it was a lot of fun. I figured it would be a little cheesy due to the commercials, but I really enjoyed it. The music was great, the story was good, and the lighter-shaped flashlights they gave out was a nice touch.

You're going to love it. I'd say it's my favorite, out of all the ones I've seen. I'm trying to remember what cast I saw it with, but can't...all I know is one of the Queer Eye guys (Jai) was Angel.
I did get to see Wicked with Kristen and Idina and that was awesome.

I saw Phantom of the Opera on broadway last April. It was fantastic, but then the Phantom came out at the end asking for donations to some charity. It completely ruined the atmosphere.

Avenue Q is coming to Boston this month and I really wish I could go. I've never seen it and I think the music is so funny. Ugh!!
This summer I got to see Rent with Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp, that was incredible. Met Anthony Rapp after, that was great.

Les fucking Mis.
This. Some of the most powerful songs/music I have ever heard.
I love musicals. Favorites would have to be RENT, Spring Awakening, Wicked, Les Miserables, Cats, and Phantom of the Opera.

I'm bumping this. I love film musicals but have never seen one on stage unless you count Riverdance.
Trying to figure out what I should see.

I grew up loving musicals...I used to beg my mom for tap dancing lessons (apparently welfare doesnt cover that).
Wait a minute, are we talking about movie musicals? Because other than Lambchop I've never seen anything live.

I bumped this thread because it seemed to be the only one focused on just stage musicals.

CShadows, it's tough to recommend what to see now, since the season just ended and everything closed! New stuff is opening soon - I really want to see Catch Me If You Can!
Still debating on Spiderman. Don't really want to invest my money.
As for Soundtracks - if you like Spring Awakening and RENT, you guys should listen to the Next To Normal soundtrack. It has a rock musical vibe to it as well, and the show was just incredible.
Spring Awakening makes me happy inside - for a while I was thinking about getting a tattoo related to the lyrics in "All That's Known"

Can't wait to see the Spiderman musical monstrosity.Still kind of iffy about it. The reviews are in and I don't think one reviewer enjoyed it. This article made me really question it as well:

all they say is 'trust in what is written'
wars are made and somehow that is wisdom
thought is suspect and money is their idol
and nothing is okay unless it's scripted in their Bible
would have been the sheet music notes. ultimately i got notes for jew - 23

Call me Chris. And thanks for the tip on Catch Me If You Can.
I've never heard any of Spring Awakening. But Duncan Sheik is cool shit. Something I should hear/see apparently?

Spring Awakening is no longer on Broadway, but I think a new tour is launching soon. I have the cast album if you want to listen. It was big because it was the start of the newer rock musicals, and the entire cast were teenagers. Oh, and there was nudity.

A friend of mine went and she said she saw Lea Michele boob. So. Jealous.
In The Heights was decent. Listened to the soundtrack a bit, but haven't had a chance to see it live. <3 Spring Awakening. Listen to the soundtrack every once in a while still.

Apart from being a pop-punk fan, I am a huge fan of A Spring Awakening and Les Miserables !!!
Do school plays count?
And I'd school say plays count... as long as they're musicals obv... haha
Oh in addition a friend of mine recently introduced me to a broadway musical called Five Years
pretty standard music, but interesting way of organizing the plot and some humorous songs.

The fucking musical season in Minneapolis this year is out of this world. Already saw Shrek: The Musical, which blew me away, and in a few months, I'll be going to both West Side Story & Billy Elliott. Stoked.

Just started Singin' in the Rain. I recently realized that I've never seen a musical, unless you count Once or The Muppets.
