Fantastic album.

Defined cool jazz as a genre and helped to put Miles Davis on the map, and really just a brilliant album to listen to. The arrangements are lush and the playing is brilliant.
Yeah, I know, jazz is boring.

There's an official jazz thread for this.
Nowhere near my favorite Miles release either.

Yup. I'd put up Kind of Blue, Bitches Brew, Sketches of Spain, Porgy and Bess, and 'Round About Midnight before BOTC ever reached the tip of my tongue.

Bitches Brew is more important (because it helped formulate what would become Fusion) and Kind of Blue is seen as his tour de force (I suspect that's due to it being the transition away from Hard Bop to Modality), but Birth of the Cool is still damn good and probably my third or fourth favorite Davis record.
fuck the haters. i love jazz. i do jazz band at my school and its the best musical decision i've ever made. everything branches off of jazz, rock, funk, hip-hop, latin, ballads, anything. i just came to appreciate the genre so much more once i decided to join

I'd add Filles De Kilimanjaro, In A Silent Way, On The Corner, and A Tribute To Jack Johnson to that list. I really love fusion Miles.

Bahah.. I do too... but since OP was more in the bop age, I didn't think listing off 10 albums would be helpful. How about 'You're Under Arrest'? Hahaha... that record is downright HILARIOUS....

Ha yeah, his work from 1980 onward wasn't much of a way to go out.
