I'd definitely recommend getting a Presonus Firepod. I've used one with Logic and it's always served me well.

OK first off I don't use Logic but a good friend of mine composes for film scores and he uses Logic exclusively for it. He absolutely LOVES the MOTU interface he has, but I think that cost like $800. But...MOTU does have some cheaper interfaces you should look into it. Maybe you could save a little bit more and get one because I think you could avoid the inevitable 'crap i really need to upgrade' feeling you would get in about a year from now if you buy something that is $400 or less. My friend has had his MOTU for like 3 years and he still thinks it is awesome. If you think about the math, $800 over 3 years is only like $22 a month.

How many channels do you need? You wanting to track live drums?

If not, sonically, the best one for the money is the Apogee Duet. The converters are high quality. The downside is, it's only 2 channels in and 2 channels out. Not a big deal if you're not tracking live drums.

If you need more channels, the firepod is a good option.

+1 on the duet- great 2 channel interface with fairly uncolored preamps. however if that is a bit over your budget, take a look at Echo's Audiofire series- the converters are burr brown chips (i believe) and are said to be comparable to the Duets'.

if you need to do drums in a pinch with two channels, I'd look in the recording thread (Stickied) for a video on the recorderman method. it's possible to start with the recorderman positioning and play with the mic pair to get a good drum sound.

P.S. Mono drums kill everytime!!!

I use logic for my recording, it works great! It has some great effects and mixing tools.
I use my alesis multimix as the interface and it works great.
