you heard it and were just like holy fuck i this is the most insanely amazing thing i have ever heard in my life..
mine has to be dookie, and then the next day kerplunk.. when i was like 12 i think
my mom actually cut the cd's in half cause she heard longview on my stereo.. i cried hahah
I had listened to Green Day since i was a baby, as my mum listened to it to. The first band I listened to by myself with Blink-182, a friend played his brothers Dude Ranch CD when I was 8 or 9 I think.
My mum didn't approve at first cause of the foul language but eventually gave up after i re-bought the CD for the 4th time.

There's two that I feel had an effect on me, my uncle and step-dad always loved their music and introduced me to a whole bunch of stuff I listen to today. Growing up always wanting them to always put on The Smiths - The Smiths and Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures shaped the music I listen to today and they remain in my top 5 records of all time.

Take This to Your Grave was the album I was listening to heavily when I started getting laid, so that one.
In fact, it's the album that spawned a near-obsession in music within me (and got me to pick up a bass and start a shitty band and want to go to school for journalism to write about the medium). I still love it as I did the first time I listened to Tell That Mick..., mostly out of nostalgia, and partly because it's infectious Powerpop that's just so damn catchy.

New Found Glory - Self-Titled
I remember getting an NFG sampler at a local skate shop that had "Better Off Dead" on it and thinking, "This is music." I went and got the full album, and got in trouble because it had playboys and condoms on the cover. Eventually, I got it back, and fell in love. It was the gate that opened me into the musical world. I remember seeing them when I was 12 w/ Midtown, Teen Idols, and Less Than Jake. I met Ian (I only played bass at the time) and swore I would never wash my hand again.

My friend wouldn't stop talking about The Artist In The Ambulance, and I finally picked it up after having him tell me about it for 2 months. I didn't know what to think about it at first. Honestly, How to Save a Life... I realize it's not one of the greatest albums written, but I was ten and thought it was pretty. Which eventually paved the way to me buying other albums by better bands etc. etc.
eta: also, War All the Time...It took me awhile to get used to, but got me interested in more complicated music than what I had been listening to.
Probably Linkin Park's Meteora. I was 11 and I had never seriously listened to any kind of rock music before, my 16 year old cousin gave it and the Beastie Boys' Hello Nasty to me for Christmas and I don't think it left my CD player (also a new christmas gift) for months. It took me a lot longer to figure out the genius in the Beastie album, and looking back I have to say it's the better album of the two I got, but Meteora is what turned me on to the music world.

My album choice for this would be Agaetis Byrjun. It changed my whole outlook on music and the beauty that could come out of it without hooks or a catchy rhythm. Jimmy Eat World's Bleed American, for sure. I bought it when I was in 6th grade because I liked The Middle when I was a more casual music fan, listened to it once and thought it was a total waste of money, and let it collect dust in my room. Then a year or so later I decided to listen to it again on a whim, and now Jimmy Eat World is my favorite band and while it's not my favorite JEW album, it's what got me really into music and brought me out of my lame 12/13 year old angsty stage.
Commit This To Memory by Motion City Soundtrack. I know it's not that old, but before I only listened to the bands my dad got me into (The Beatles, The Who, etc.). When I heard "Everything is All Right" on Fuse I finally found a new band I could get into. Definitely opened my eyes to newer music
Same here. I remember hearing about the band and thinking they were just another stupid "emo" band. Then I heard Everything Is Alright on the radio (which was the one and only time they ever played it...I think it was a battle of the songs type thing). I checked them out, and the rest is history. That album fit perfectly into my life.
So what got me into what I listen to today was probably a combination of Commit This To Memory and making fun of Senses Fail and Hawthorne Heights. I would listen to 187 and Ohio Is For Lovers and sort of laugh at it...but then look for more bands in the genre. I don't listen to SF or HH anymore, but they got me to explore new music.

Wow. I remember my dad putting this on and literally being freaked out when Hells Bells came on...it's just so loud and sinister. This is ironic because it came full circle when my dad and I went to AC/DC in January. What a great memory.
Anyway, I think Dookie certainly got me in the right direction. That was one of my first CDs. I also listened to a lot of my dad's record when I was younger and I know that had an impact on my now. The Jayhawks, Soul Asylum, Golden Smog, Son Volt and Wilco can all be traced by to my childhood days.

I think that Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson's 'Unnoticeable in a Tiny Town, Invisible in the City' really opened my mind musically. Before then, I mostly just listened to hardcore and screamo. YPOFH opened my ears to subtleties in music and really got me into post-rock. It definitely made me more open minded in my musical tastes. I listen to a lot more indie music now, which I guess I could say indirectly caused this. Post-rock is a genre that I think most people should check out if you're into really climactic, mostly instrumental music.

Nothing really has to happen after you've discovered Pink Moon.
I love Pink Moon as much as the next guy, but it doesn't hold a candle to Fire Leaves Left.

How so? Not that I have a problem if it's your preference, but I'm just curious.

Imogen Heap - Speak for Yourself
Something Corporate - Leaving Through the Window
and, Fall out Boy - Take This to Your Grave
thought I would hate Fall out Boy but as soon as Tell That Mick.. started playing, I was sold.
Dookie for me as well. First album that really got me outta my single whore phase and into full albums. Green Day is still to this day my favourite band.

Brand News "Deja Entendu" i think was really what stemmed kind of my transformation into what is my current music taste. before that i was into mostly classic rock, but since then ive been mostly a modern guy.

It just feels like more of a complete album to me. Pink Moon is completely perfect, but I like that Fire Leaves Left is fleshed out a bit more. Also, in my opinion, there are no songs on Pink Moon that can compete with songs like Three Hours and Cello Song.
It's just a discrepancy. I think he put out three flawless albums, and I frequent all of them.

Well to each his own, but "Three Hours" and "Cello Song" aren't even my favorites on Five Leaves Left. And frankly I don't think there's a song on that album that can compete with any track on Pink Moon, barring "Horn" and "Know".
But then again I prefer Nick when he is stripped down to the core, and obviously you favor the more fleshed out approach. Either way, we can both agree that all three of his albums were very good.

Deja entendu got me off all the typical shit of a 7th grader. I know how common this answer will probably be whatever.
