"The Iraqi government decided Thursday to launch its own investigation into reports that U.S. Marines killed unarmed civilians last year, and the top U.S. general in Iraq ordered American commanders to conduct ethical training on battlefield conduct.

The decision to begin an Iraqi inquiry into the killings was made at a Cabinet meeting, Adnan al-Kazimi, an adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, told The Associated Press.

The investigation will be carried out by a special committee made up of the Justice and Human Rights ministries along with security officials, al-Kazimi said.

The U.S. military is conducting at least two investigations into the Nov. 19 killings of 24 people in Haditha, including women and children, following a bomb attack on a military convoy in which a Marine died."

What do you think the fall out for this will be?

Is there anything Bush can do about it? I'm thinking no, since his approval rating is pretty much shot. If he were higher in the polls, the public might be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but people don't trust him as much.

I'm thinking this is going to be like Abu Ghraib, but even worse.

good thing it took the big news organizations in this country 6 months to latch onto this when TIME ran a piece on this in January/February.

I think there was an article in the new york times about this too awhile back because I vaguely remember talking about it in my international relations class, and that was around november/december.

If you complain about the time this took to come out you have to take a couple things to issue as well. First, notice that in the article is said that "The Iraqi government decided Thursday to launch its own investigation into reports that U.S. Marines killed unarmed civilians last year".

This just means incidences like these take time to look at. I wouldn't want the accusations covered in full detail a day or week after it occured because you might be smearing the soldiers who did it, the Marines, and the entire US military based on false accusations.

It's not gonna change the situation if it's reported on a week after it happends or 6 months after it happens. If anything it will give you greater details on what happened and who was involved and who wasnt.
