MTV.com recently wrote an article (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1533255/20060531/green_day.jhtml?headlines=true) on Green Day (http://www.greenday.com)'s next album:
BEVERLY HILLS, California — Now that Green Day are presumably finally done collecting awards for American Idiot, the guys have only one task left as they embark on the album's follow-up: building new trophy cases.

"Yeah, it cost me 50 bucks, but it took me two years to put it together," bassist Mike Dirnt added.

Actually, Green Day have already started working on what a post on their site curiously called "cool projects" (see "Green Day End Their Vacation To Work On Mysterious 'Cool Projects' ") — but is likely the band's next release.

"Everything that we do is contributing to something that we're going to put out," Armstrong clarified, sort of. "We don't have a solid idea yet, it's just the beginning, but the beginning ideas that we have are really exciting.

"For us, everything that we do is completely, 100 percent passion- and energy-driven, so however we're going to come out with our next album, just be certain it's going to be an event, not just putting a record out," he continued. "At this point, to put a record out with like 12 songs on it and turn it in sounds a bit boring for us. So we want to definitely make something that is well thought-out and [that] all of our blood is put into."

So far, the group's been recording demos on a daily basis and working through dozens of ideas.

"We've headed back to the same [mentality as American Idiot], and that is what we really gotta do: Erase all the rules and go in and be productive," Dirnt said. "Be creative but be productive. And if [we] got nothing, record something and just enjoy what we do."

Although Green Day are moving on to their next record, they still plan to make a movie based on the American Idiot story line (see "Green Day Considering Movie Version Of American Idiot").

"It's definitely unfolding," Armstrong said. "Every single week there's more ideas about doing a film for American Idiot, and it's definitely going to happen."

As much as I liked American Idiot, it got played into the ground. So it'll be nice to get a refreshing batch of songs from these guys when it's finally released...even if everyone knows they'll be played into oblivion again.

Sorry but what rules did American Idiot erase? And despite a common theme throughout the album wasn't still an album with 13 tracks on it? And releasing a track that went for 9mins and 8secs but really only went places that we could predict and have heard before from Green Day sounded a bit boring to me.

Oh for the days of Dookie, Insomniac and Nimrod.

Good for them, I'm sure whatever their next step is, it'll rock. American Idiot was/is a great album- fuck all the naysayers that say it sucks just because Green Day actually gained some new fans and more mainstream attention with it.

I can't tell if you're playing along with his joke or not, because they have done far better than gold. Their first two albums went gold. Every one of their major label records has gone platinum at least once. You are right about one thing- they have been the biggest band in the world twice.

you gotta give them props for still being around doing what they love. there not many bands that do that, and even the bands we thought that were super strong (eg. blink), are dying.

Biggest band between 1986 and 2006? I think Nirvana might have them there.

Nirvana & Green Day fame I think are about equal but Nirvana appreciation is higher.

Well...that's understandable Green Day are my 2nd fav band and I find myself alittle bored(since '06). I've mostly been listening to 1,039,Nimrod,and Insommniac since I played AI non-stop since '04(forgetting MTV & radio fame crap). New stuff will rock(heck it could be a Who's Next),and I believe the movie will blow my mind/change my life as much as the album.

P.S. look to The Wall for an amazing example as rock opera to movie.

Such as??

I dont think the album musically has done anything at all. However, the way it was marketed to a target audience has been the most successful campaign since the spice girls.

No not instrumentlly, except the horns & keyboard stuff(but the instruments were still awesome just not music/life changing like the album as a whole). But, the fact that they stood out, said something and made an amazing album about american culture/life,media,government,love,anger,sa dness, loss, and have an enthrolling story ruled.

I remeber the first time I listened to it front to back after looking up the full story/meaning(s).
I was changed, deeply. from the title track to whatsername, what an impact on me, what a masterpiece.

The way it was marketed/commercialized pissed me off SO much. They twisted one of my favorite albums into something it was not, so many people didn't know it was a rock opera and either thought it was: A.(girls)oh! they're so hot! i love the song american idiot and wake me up when september ends, or B.(most guys)***S!POSERS!SELLOUTS! or C.(others) I love this record.

Armeggedon, I love your sig. I'm not sure I agree with it, meaning I think "safe" is over-used, and somethings don't have to be violent, or angry, or filled with cursing to be relevant to our culture. But it's still great to see Punk Fans thinking outside the box of typical norms and MTV. Because, whether you know it or not, "punk" is the new pop for kiddos nowadays... and that's not bad, but Punk was never the "safe" music. So yeah, long rambling, thread hijack, etc. But I just wanted to say, your Sig usually makes me think more than most of the comments on this Forum.

Green Day blew up like they deserved to with American Idiot.

Now with the world watching, they'll attempt to recreate that success, and I hope they pull it off.

But...if the emo/glam/punk thing wears out its welcome in the mainstream by then, what kind of album will they put out? Something more along the lines of Warning? Or will they keep going in the direction they're headed?
