I'm starting this thread simply because I love RHCP, but I don't see enough of them around here. So this is just to sound off your love for the dudes with the socks over their tallywhackers.

No (good) bands ever come to my town. If RHCP were to come here, I would pay as much as I needed to get in to that show.

I haven't seen prices that high, the reach about $61 for the NJ show, which floor tickets sold out in 30 seconds. But I guess after taxes and shit it'd reach above $70. I'm willing to spend much more than that for RHCP, I grew up on those guys.

look, mary jane's last dance has been one of my all time favorite songs since it came out. and when i first heard dani california, NOTHING made me think of mary jane's last dance. in fact, after all of this bullshit was "pointed out" all i hear are similar drum beats durring the verses, which happens all the time in rock music.
and the fact that there's an extra chord in dani california kills your argument

Regarding the whole Tom Petty rip off thing, it doesn't bug me all that much. Dani California was a song pardoying a whole mess of artists, well maybe just the music video. The bands portrayed were huge influences to RHCP, perhaps Tom Petty was one as well?
That's probably gonna fall through.

06/07/06, 06:38 PM
It could be influence, could be straight up yellow journalism. leave that crap to the artists to sort out. RHCP keeps releasing the same stuff over and over just putting new images on it. This whole parody video just doesnt relate to the song and its quite dumb. Plus find me a song where you know what the hell Anthony Kiedis is talking about, he just strings along anything and everything but nothing is coherant or relatable. Personally hey they put out some decent music to listen to while driving in your car but other than that i cant really see myself actually saying "hey...these guys really are putting together some fancy stuff here!" Tom Petty has an arguement and i think we should all see it on Celebrity Deathmatch (RIP claymation)

1. where did tom petty make any argument?
2. given your ignorant statements about "he just strings along anything and everything but nothing is coherant or relatable" i'd ask you to "listen for yourself" as well.

saying Tom Petty has an arguement is just a play on words bud, it doesnt mean he actually has an arguement to take up. and ive been around for the RHCP musical carousel for god knows how long and to me it just seems like its all the same, nothing has changed, their style, their lyrics, their instrumental, and Anthony Kiedis hasn't even tried touching a different vocal range, making all their music sound exactly the same. Boring Mundayne Mindless and Dull.

go listen to "dosed", then "funky monks", then "i could have lied", then "cabron", then "road trippin'", then "soul to squeeze" and try to say that you ignorant bastard. RHCP is one of the most talented amazing bands EVER.

me an ignorant bastard...this coming from the kid with his name as I LOVE POP ROCK haha, thanks ill take your advice on that seeing as to RHCP is something i grew up listening to with two older siblings, and me being old as well. still doesnt change the fact that they havent changed their style at all. but no need to reiterrate a statement i already stated earlier.

06/08/06, 04:41 PM
What does my name have to do with anything? Growing up in their era doesnt mean a thing. You obviously haven't listened to them closely at all fi you say that. Go listen to "freaky Styley" then "By the Way" in the same day, and you can't possibly believe that. if you dont like them, whatever, but it's simply false to say they haven't changed.

Anthony's lyrics are definitely understandable, and saying they're constantly the same is false. They have similar meaning relating to the same thing (one topic would be his drug issues), but he is constantly clear. The fact that you don't have an ear for it doesn't validate your arguement. The RHCP have definitely changed over time. If you listen to their music through chronological order, you will definitely find a huge difference.

fight like a brave-a song about fighting drug addiction adn gtting better, so you wont relapse. he wrote it after his best friend and former guitarist of RHCP, Hillel Slovak, died of drug-overdose.
Give It Away- He wrote this song after he went to his friends house and while looking through her closet found and coat he really liked. she gave it to him and explained its important to sometimes give away the things you love most. he loved this concept and wrote a song. "there's a river born to be a giver, keep you warm wont let you shiver", a seemingly random line whioch is actually about his friend nick named River, i think his name was actually "eric river".
Under the Bridge- A song he wrote after a drive downtown to buy drugs when he felt all alone. Buyt he still had an affinity with his city Los Angelos. "under the bride down tow, is where i dew some blood" basically he shot lots of heroin with a mexican drug dealer, under a bridge.
these aren't really good examples, but it shows anthony keidis can write some seemingly random crap and its actually very meaningful.

To say they haven't changed their style is ridiculous.
They haven't necessarily strayed very far from their SOUND, but their style changes constantly.
In comparison, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" and "Californication" are nowhere NEAR the same album. I don't even think I'd go as far as to say it really sounds like the same band. John Frusciante is in the middle of a rise to guitar divinity that hasn't been seen in a while, and he keeps constantly evolving into a more talented overall musician. Flea will always be a BAMF on a bass guitar, and Chad Smith is just flat masterful on the kit. I can understand saying that you don't like the band, but, damn, don't even try to pass off 20 years of this eccentric, funk-filled, harmonic music as being all the same.

Under The Bridge was also about John, and how they were starting to drift a bit. The loneliness factor in the beginning describes that. Good looks though, you understand it..and read Scar Tissue perhaps?

That's completely wrong. That verse wasn't about somebody nick named River (this supposed "Eric River"), it was about somebody named River. River Phoenix (http://imdb.com/name/nm0000203/) was an actor, he was nominated for an oscar and stared in the Gus Van Sant (http://imdb.com/name/nm0001814/) (of Good Will Hunting fame) film, My Own Private Idaho (http://imdb.com/title/tt0102494/) with Keanu Reeves, and Flea had a small role. Flea and River were really good friends, if you look up the lyrics to Transcending, you'll see how close they really were, they were brothers in a way. River Phoenix is also the brother of two-time academy award nominee Joaquin Phoenix (http://imdb.com/name/nm0001618/). If you've ever heard the song Transcending (http://youtube.com/watch?v=YJF6qI1vAww) by the Chilis, then that song is completely about River. And yes, River was his real name. River Phoenix was pretty big back in the day, but died in 1993, 31st of October, which happens to be today. He died outside the Viper Room, when he was out with his brother Joaquin, Flea, actress Samantha Manthis and other members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, including John Frusciante, who gave him the Speed Ball, and then when he was feeling really sick, his girlfriend injected River with Valium(she got charged with manslaughter), which caused heart failure. He died on the sidewalk outside of the Viper Room 14 years ago, Flea - who predominantly wrote Transcending, rode in the ambulance with River, as he died. Joaquin made the 911 call. It is for this reason, that friend of River Phoenix, Johnny Depp closes the Viper Room every year on this day. And yes, I did register to this forum, just to tell you that, because I was looking up Give It Away on google, and just saw your excerpt and was like "wtf?". Hope I've been of help.
