View Full Version : Wait... people still believe in horoscopes?
I think Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory put it best...
Penny: "I'm a Sagittarius, which probably tells you way more than you need to know..."
Sheldon: "Yes... it tells us that you participate in the mass cultural delusion that the sun's apparent position relative to arbitrarily defined constellations at the time of your birth somehow affects your personality."
I was having coffee with two girls I was working with today, and there was a copy of the newspaper. One of them picked it up and started the old "What's your star sign?" So the other girl answers. The first girl reads the horoscope. As usual, the horoscope is vague bullshit that could apply to every situation in anyone''s life.
Then me. "Cancer", I tell them out of politeness, trying to keep my eyes from rolling in their sockets. She reads mine, and yep, it's still a load of nonsense. One of them then goes on to talk about her boyfriend, and how he's this star sign, and how it's soooo obvious that he's a Leo or some shit and she's a Pisces or whatever because they're such opposites and they clash so much!, and the other is agreeing and giving her opinion on this one guy she went out with and what his star sign meant for them.
And I sit there, wondering if I can drown myself in my coffee cup.
The same dumb shit would happen with some people in the last show I was in. They'd say offhand things like "Well, what else would you expect from a Capricorn", as if it actually meant something. What the fuck.
People seriously still believe in this shit?
Apparently, they do.
I think it's a load of shit though....what about premature babies??

Why do you need to feel so superior to other people? Does it make you a happier person or the world a better place for you to be a judgmental prick? It's not like most people who read their horoscopes put much faith in it, it's just something interesting/fun to read and see how it applies to one's life. astrology has existed for thousands of years so you're probably not going to change anything today by bitching and acting superior to those who like to know their sign. Really, in the big picture, who really gives a shit? I personally don't like to sit with people discussing sports but I suck it up and realize that everyone has different interests. Thank goodness, if we were all clones of each other, life would be really boring.

He is probably so judgemental as he's right, to honestly believe in that shit is rediculous. Also hes not acting superior to those who know their sign, he knew his, just to people that put any faith in that hocous pocus shinanigans. Like when some girl is saying how they're boyfriend is a leo and they are capricorn its like fate. No it isn't, she's monderately attractive and he's got a wanger, that's fate.
Lets talk about the later part of your post, I like sports but still hate when people talk about them. Like their opinon matters, not to mention the fact that most of them have no clue what they are talking about and basically just repeat the opinons of the local radio station. It's worse at actual events and they shout at the players like they are making a difference, shit down, I hate those people.
P.S. The person that pointed out the hypocrisy of judging some one for being judgmental, congrats.

I think equating following horoscopes with interests like sports and movies is a bit misguided. People live their lives by this shit. There is an industry that makes millions selling a complete and utter lie. I'm sure there are other things you could say this about (can't think of any off the top of my head). And if people enjoy it, that's awesome. But it still blows my mind.

Why is it so hard to think that they probably based star signs and personalities on some form of truth? It was hocus pocus shenanigans that caused people to even try to match personalities to their signs, clearly it wasnt any form of statistics and observation, no it was just them pulling it out of their ass. I mean it was hocus pocus that got them to survive the winter, work their agriculture around the future flood seasons, and anticipate solar and lunar eclipses.

In fear of bringing a well constructed argument to the table. It is so hard to believe because they have no reasoning as to why. For example, you can look at crime statisics from the 70's and say they've went down. That information is useless in it's self. However, if you know that police numbers have been increased you ca draw the conclusion more police = less crime. Apply this to horoscopes, all you have are different personalities and births in different years. No correlation at all between them, nobody has even tried to guess how if you were born in the winter this would make you different from in the summer.
Not to mention, to believe personality is brn in you and can't be changed goes completely against any research at all into psychology, which generlly agrees that personality is mostly environmental, however genetics may predispose people to more likely have certain caracteristics. Example, someone with more testosterone will more likely be more aggressive than a guy who produces less.
And, fixed.

i don't really care if people think i'm a jackass, since i think the same of them it kind of evens out. there's no reason to feel like less of a person because you don't believe in religion, or *gasp* even worse, God. Seriously, I'm freaking sick of religious people pushing their shit on everyone like our opinions aren't as worthy as theirs.
I do have problems with organized religion though. I have a problem with the fact that most of the wars that have taken place in this world have been rooted in religious differences. I'm sorry, but I have a serious problem with that. Everyone thinks their bullshit is better than everyone elses. It's ridiculous and totally unnecessary to me. I'm glad that religion helps some people but it really makes me wonder why they need such a crutch to get by in life.

There is actually a difference between winter babies and summer babies, winter babies are more likely to struggle through life, be sick a lot, be average or below average in school, and no this isnt coming from astrology, it's coming from actual science. And I assume they tried to guess the different personalities in different months, and used astrology to figure out why back in those days.
As for your little "fixed" part, I was just pointing out what that leo and capricorn arent the best match, and that actually cancer and capricorn are.
I dont see what the problem is in letting someone have fun with astrology and star signs. I do believe in fate, and I like to think that the fact that I'm a cancer (and actually am exactly like the description of my sign) and the object of my affection is a capricorn (and fits the description of a capricorn perfectly) is a sign that we were written for each other. I dont take it too seriously, and I dont read my horoscope, but I do like to look at what I consider signs.
