Hey to all. This is my first post here, I only discovered the site a few days ago.

Anyways, a friend and I are thinking about opening a record store, but we want to make it fun sorta thing. If you've seen the movie Empire Records then you'll know what I am talking about.

Basically I'm posting here to ask you all if you've got any ideas for what we could do, stuff we should have in the store etc.

We already figured we could have a stage area for live bands, a couple of recording booths and live music nights and stuff. Any other suggestions you guys might have I am interested to hear them.

Thanks :)

are you planning on selling all types of music or just one main genre?

Probably all types. But I'd be mainly pushing punk. I don't think there's enough people where I live to open up a store that would be genre specific.

get couchs, like a sort of listening lounge type thing. and yeah live music is a good idea, one time kiros and obnoxious (2 locals bands) played in a west 49, it was a little cramped but it was cool.

if yur gonna have shows there your probably going to need some big bathrooms haha. some ideas... ummm dont do karaoke... i'm not sure how much money you're putting into this but you could sell other merchandise like band shirts and whatnot... if you're going to have recording booths you might as well sell recording equipment... and as far as keeping it fun i think the live shows would be enough to keep it fun

yeah the live music stage is a real good idea, that would go well i think. and the listening lounge sounds cool that somebody suggested. start with those i say. we had Not By Choice play at a west 49 here before, cause they are extremely local to me and it was amazing. bands in stores are sweet.

a live stage would be awesome, they have one at the 333 yonge HMV superstore in downtown Toronto. Not By Choice and Mad Caddies played there on the same day, but I missed Mad Caddies because I had a job interview

you could also have some sort of area/booth that focuses on bands in your local scene or upcoming bands. Band merchandise is always a plus also.

Just make sure you know what your doing man. Running a record shop is gonna be tough. I wouldn't push punk, cause you probably won't last long.

youre already thinking too far ahead of yourself by saying you want a stage, recording booth, etc.
