oh hey! i've been listening to neon indian the last few days. i'm really diggin it.
you should check out 'small - teenage cover'
that album came out this year as well, and it takes the poppy kind of feel of neon indian, and mixes it with the electronic feel from passion pit/m83 kind of. either way, one of my favorites of the year.

Either way, I don't give a shit. Fuck you, fuck your stupid opinion on what metal "is". Those bands, for the majority are metalcore bands, at best. A dishonest and inaccurate representation of metal as a genre. I don't consider myself the world's biggest metal fan or even an avid fan of metal. I like some of the music. But, to be giving an opinion on anything you should at least be informed, which you clearly are not. To say those bands are metal and then try to ridicule me when I call you out on it, is utterly hilarious. You're a nu jack asshole who is listing off a veritable who's who of shitty second rate fourth generation metalcore that I wouldn't piss on to put out a fire. And please, throw the elitist argument at me, with all your might. I am an elitist. I know I'm an elitist. You know why? I'm better than you. That's why. Elitism can't be insulting because it separates the good from the bad and the real from the fake and so on and so forth. I got plenty of free time to waste and more life than you ever will, so rather than throw the petty fucking arguments at me in your rebuttal, justify to me how The Bled and Zao are metal bands. what scene are you talking about?
anthonydarko. i asked him when he posted something worth reading. he couldn't own up to it. troll=someone who just exists to start shit on a message board. People might start shit, but if they're saying something worth reading, they're not a troll. Calling someone elitist isn't worthwhile.
You guys don't know what elitism is. It's not telling someone a band they like sucks or that they don't know what they're talking about. Elitism inherently involves silencing of a viewpoint. John isn't silencing you by saying the bands you like aren't metal. He isn't keeping you from talking about them or whatever, he's just correcting you. Real elitism is things like how major labels defining trends and only pushing bands within those trends or saying things like women have no place in hardcore. Huge difference.
and by scenes we're talking about local scenes. I've never heard of a band (let alone of a decent one) from Wright City, but springfield has tons. Yeah the city sucks though but most places do.
oh okay, i thought you fell into the "punk scene" like that one guy said, and you were defending your punk scene over his scene in wright city, and just got completely lost.

Whether or not the religion or faith is fake or not is for a whole other argument, but as far as how "shitty" the music actually is, I don't really care how much you dislike Norma Jean or The Chariot or August Burns Red, I listen to them and enjoy them. It's no where near the gimmick that any mainstream rock or pop act is anymore in itself. Are there bands that do do music just to sell records? Of course, a band like Attack Attack! definitely is a gimmick, but the guys in a band like For Today or War of Ages live and breath that stuff. If you don't like it that's more than fine, but to say it totally is a gimmick for the entire genre is wrong.

i'd say across the board it's all fake. they are playing bar venues and getting drunk one night and cashing in on religious themed fests in the summer. explain how that makes any sense.
you don't see a true religious artist who actually will play in a church and special places for that sort of belief with his music going out on a bar tour with a package of bands to make money by a guarantee and licensed support from hot topic do you? it's all a joke.

the music being bad or good is moot, they can be great musicians, but from a business standpoint it's fake/a joke. i think that's why you are seeing a lot of these bands being labeled/questioned as "christian" themed music from a bastardized fan base full of gullible kids, come out and have to explain their music is not christian based. example comes to mind here is he is legend.
i don't disagree that the majority of them are in it for the cash, or that they can only get signed to a label if they say they're Christian.
i'm talking about mewithoutYou. they're not in it for the money primarily. i've talked to each of them individually and read countless interviews. i'm not saying i know them like a brother or anything, but you'd have to go to the extreme to pull of their sincerity that i've felt/heard from them and their music.

Honestly, though, my friends and I are friends with the guys in A Plea for Purging, so I can definitely say from experience that, while a lot of the Christian bands are just using their proclamations of faith as selling points, there are definitely bands that genuinely write "Christian music" because that's just what naturally comes out; it's what they're passionate about and what matters most to them. I can understand how one would make that generalization, but it's not accurate across the board.

have you ever listened to them? or read the lyrics?
yes that's fine that they are not in it for the money, but they were certainly not a christian themed band musically when they first started out, A to B life is like a nu metal record that isn't exactly forth coming with it being so oversaturated with religious themes. Now their lyrics are so blatantly christian themed that deaf and blind people can figure out they really love their religion. but at the same time, they still sin, so its definitely a contradiction.
I'm not saying you can't be Christian, but peddling that viewpoint through punk music is fucking disgusting to me.
no, i understand what you mean and your opinion on it, but why? like, why is it not okay for their to be Christian punk bands or whatever?

well, i guess it just comes down to your personal beliefs because every single true Christian, including many songs from mwY, freely admit that all people sin, including Christians. so, i don't see why that should be held against them.
also, i agree that [A->B] Life is not nearly as focused on God than the rest of their albums, but their music before that as well as some parts of that particular album do deal with God and Christianity. it just so happens that their debut album was after a bad relationship he had.
I understand what you are saying for sure. Yes there are definitely ones that are cashing in, that aren't sincere, and that are only using that to gain some sort of following. But not all the bands are like that.
i'd say all of them are.
i am local to ABR and I have been to more ABR shows prior to them signing to solid state than everyone on this forum combined. I saw them as young teens every week for free playing for anyone who was down. They were like the weekly event. They played hard, and never once went around and preached or had lyric content referring to jesus. fast forward almost 7 years later and that band has done a 360 in their image and themes since signing on the dotted line to solid state. it's not even the same band.

lol @ christian metalcore being a gimmick.
LOL at you thinking you know what you're talking about.
Look at the influences of "christian metalcore". Dudes in those bands tended to be just normal dudes playing heavy aggressive music. They didn't play the industry game, which is why they're semi-obscure. Look at why Botch never got popular while Norma Jean did. Your answer will explain how Christian Metalcore is a gimmick.
If you don't like it that's more than fine, but to say it totally is a gimmick for the entire genre is wrong.
explain that statement tex. underoath's press photos are just as carefully controlled as taylor swift's.

I just read the last page of this thread but you guys have to be kidding me. You've ran out of ways to insult crappy music that now you have to move into religion? What a joke. Yeah, a good majority of them are in it for the money, but how exactly does that fall onto Christanity? There are plenty of bands that do it purely and simply for worship, and to bring that worship to other people?

Punk music and punk culture are synonymous. They walk hand in hand. Punk rock is a celebration of all things rock and roll. This conflicts with most, if not all Christian ideals.

You can't separate punk music and punk culture. That makes no sense whatsoever. They influence each other, so any discussion of "punk music" must inherently involve "punk culture" otherwise you end up with logic that justifies fall out boy or all time low or cobra starship being punk rock. Punk was rooted in dislike of mainstream rock as well as the corporate influance in music hence the DIY attitude.
"John Holmstrom, founding editor of Punk magazine, recalls feeling "punk rock had to come along because the rock scene had become so tame that [acts] like Billy Joel and Simon and Garfunkel were being called rock and roll, when to me and other fans, rock and roll meant this wild and rebellious music."

When they're so closely related and intertwined, no. That would be like talking about slave hymns without mentioning slavery. If you want to contribute to the kind of discourse that waters down subcultures so that they can be co-opted by the dominant culture, then go right ahead, but I don't think you're coming from that angle.

I apologize for perhaps having a rather narrow view of things, but if straight edge is a part of punk rock culture, and it goes against the whole rock 'n' roll lifestyle that punk rock comes from, why can't Christianity and punk rock coexist? What makes them mutually exclusive? I just don't see it, but I'm far from a punk rock expert, so I'm willing to admit I'm wrong if it can be explained to me.

Fair enough. I'd agree with that. If the band members are a "Christian band" (with Christian imagery and themes) because, as Christians, that's just what naturally comes out and what they're passionate about, it's cool, but if there's an agenda behind it, that spits in the face of what punk is all about.

Bad Brains was promoting rastafarinism
One could make the argument that many of Black Flag's songs had leftist tendencies, but even if you want to ignore that, they're a poor example since they had fifty million singers/line up changes so it's hard to have a real ideological outlook.
