With the College World Series about to start ..

Well, the postseason at least. I don't know how many people are into college baseball here, but I love it. It'll be hard to discuss much until the Super Regionals (when they actually start televising games regularly), but I thought I'd start with a little controversy.

Basic summary of the article: LSU got left out of the field while Mississippi State got in, even though LSU finished higher in the conference and Miss St failed to qualify for the SEC tournament entirely and only won 1 of their final 8 weekend series after starting 21-1. Where does the controversy kick in? The head of the D1 baseball committee is Miss St's AD.

not really. This is the popular argument but have you looked at the pitcher's ERAs? A lot of the SP's have ERAs in the 1's. That doesnt even happen in the pro's.

From a consistency standpoint, I'd like wood bats to be used at the college and high school level because that's how it is in the pro's. But the college game is by no means tarnished by aluminum bats. The good pitchers dominate, even moreso than in the pro's. The HRs typically come off the weakest pitchers (often those in long to middle relief) but that's not any different then professional baseball either.

Wood bats would be great from a traditional standpoint, but if aluminum bats and this perception of it being "dinger ball" is what's keeping you from watching it, then you are mistaken. The biggest problem with aluminum bats is how hard line drives can be hit and how dangerous that can be for the pitchers on the mound.

Cal State Fullerton woot woot! I love going to their games. It's pretty BS though that all the West Coast teams are going to play each other in the regional games so essentially only one West Coast team will make the CWS.

Manhattan upset #1 seed Nebraska, 4-1. Manhattan's pitcher, Chris Cody, threw a 142 pitch complete game for the win. Yikes.

Charleston and Notre Dame played a 16 inning marathon, with Charleston coming out on top 5-4

TCU pulled off the upset on regional #1 seed Oklahoma, 6-5. TCU was trailing 5-3 going into the 9th and came up with a rally.

Kentucky was the 3rd #1 one seed to lose, falling to Ball State by a score of 3-1.

Oh, and I'll add that the college world series in general is awesome. I remember coming home from school all through elementary school, junior high, and high school and watching the games on TV. The clank of the bat is awesome. Sometimes I wish I had stuck with baseball in high school because I could have been just as good as some of the guys I see around the NCAA. Maybe not the guys at CSUF because we're really good, but definitely some of the other schools I've seen.

A couple teams are going to have easy times, I think. Clemson and Georgia Tech were never really challenged in regionals and they are playing teams who had fairly easy draws in the 1st weekend. I think the best series will definitely be North Carolina vs Alabama, who both rolled over opponents to this point.

My predictions go like this ....Georgia, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Oregon State, Cal St Fullerton, Rice, Mississippi and North Carolina.

And for those of you complaining about not being able to watch, have no fear. ESPN and ESPN2 will be airing quite a few games over the weekend.

UNC has the advantage, i think, because they are throwing bard and will have miller available to pitch a few innings in relief. OSU's pitching situation is much messier, but I think they'll keep it together and make things a ballgame.
