True, I know it's started. Just saying that I doubt people are going to contribute right now. Especially since a lot of these movies with buzz have or will have a limited release. We need screener leaks!
On topic, I might go watch An Education this month alone at a local indie theater. Hope it's great.

this is just one site's opinion (though a site who's predictions i think will be pretty accurate). however, the only one of those movies that has even a SLIM MINUTE outside chance of making it is district 9, and even that's a mega-longshot.

I don't know about it either but it's hard to predict with the expanded field. It's pretty much a lock for visual effects though, Cameron's films have won that so many times
the only lock this year is waltz i wonder what leonardo dicaprio would have done with the role?

Norman Taurog was 32 years, 9 months, 7 days old when he won.
Jason Reitman WOULD be (if he wins) 32 years, 4 months, 16 days old IF he wins, which would indeed make him the youngest director to ever win the award.

I'd almost certainly swap one of those out for Inglourious Basterds. We have a few absolute locks here (namely Up In The Air and The Hurt Locker), but we've also got four films nobody has seen (Avatar, Invictus, The Lovely Bones and Nine). I think it's safe to say that at least one of those will fail to meet expectations (like Revolutionary Road last year), but it beats me which one it will be. I'm on the fence about Avatar being a best picture type movie, and one of the other three could easily fail to be as good as their hype suggests. I'm also unsure about Up. I think it's going to be hard for it to overcome the "it has it's own category" mentality, especially when it's far from Pixar's best and when there are several films not on this list that are superior. I'm not saying it won't happen, I just don't think it's as much of a lock as everyone seems to think it is.

If the Road doesn't get a major push, Viggo will miss the nomination.
narcoleptic953

11/08/09, 11:01 AM
Just saw that Renner isn't on the actor list, and he's still the best lead performance I've seen all year. Certainly better than Damon, as much as I liked that performance. I think Damon has a better shot for supporting and wouldn't be surprised if he misses out on lead. I hope Renner gots a nom though.

I'm extremely open minded when it comes to movies, but Avatar looks extremely cheesy. James Cameron seems to be going over the top with this just because he can. But, of course, this is just my opinion. I'm well aware of the fact that (a lot of) people will disagree with me.

For Best Picture, I think good locks are Hurt Locker, An Education, Serious Man and Invictus (Academy LOVES Eastwood).
Potentials: Brothers, Doctor Parnassus. From the trailer of Nine, I wasn't impressed.
I really liked Sugar and Basterds and with 10 BP nominations this year...perhaps.
Foreign films Treeless Mountain.
I could see 2012, Terminator, and Transformers getting loads of editing nominations.

The academy didn't love Eastwood enough to give Gran Torino so much as a nomination last year, but Invictus is more their type of film, so a nomination seems very likely. I'm gonna say right now that it ain't winning, though.

I didn't think Gran Torino was as good as a lot of reviews hyped it to be (but that's just me) and! this is why there's 10 BPs instead of 5. Gotta appease those upset critics.

No, nobody has even seen it yet. I didn't think Gran Torino was great, but I did enjoy it a lot, thought Eastwood was excellent, and thought it deserved a best picture nomination far more than The Reader. I was just saying that the "Invictus will get in because the academy loves Clint Eastwood" argument isn't exactly a great one. I don't doubt that it will get in, but I don't think it's a lock.

I'm not going to write off The Lovely Bones just yet, but even some of the good reviews I've read have said it's just not really an Oscar movie. Still, there are ten nominees this year, and it's not like mediocre/bad reviews exactly bar a film from contention (*cough* The Reader *cough*). What I've read about Invictus doesn't sound promising either, but it's just hard to say until more reviews really start to hit. If one or both fails to get a nomination, what do we think will fill those spots? I'm really hoping for and Inglourious Basterds nomination...

No doubt. I've figured for awhile that either Invictus, Nine or The Lovely Bones would falter, and it looks like TLB is the one this year. Can't count it out until more reviews come in though, and even then you can't really count it out until the public gets involved, but it seems like one of the most likely to not make the top ten now.

The only way Up is losing animated is if it gets nominated for Best pic and not put in the animated category. I, for one, don't think that's going to happen though.

Has an animated movie ever been nominated for best picture? Every single year someone says that there is a chance, but I've never heard of it happening.
edit: quick googling. Only The Beauty and the Beast has ever been nominated for best picture. And this was what the year looked like:
1991 The Silence of the Lambs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Silence_of_the_Lambs_%28film%29 ) - Orion - Edward Saxon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Saxon), Kenneth Utt, Ron Bozman
Beauty and the Beast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beauty_and_the_Beast_%281991_film%2 9) - Walt Disney Pictures - Don Hahn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Hahn)
Bugsy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugsy) - TriStar - Mark Johnson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Johnson_%28film_producer%29), Barry Levinson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Levinson), Warren Beatty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Beatty)
JFK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JFK_%28film%29) - Warner Bros. - A. Kitman Ho, Oliver Stone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Stone)
The Prince of Tides (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prince_of_Tides) - Columbia - Barbra Streisand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbra_Streisand), Andrew S. Karsch
I would throw up an animated film in there if it was 1991, too.

I think The Lovely Bones is probably a very well made film, just not a very good adaptation. That alone would account for most of the mixed reactions.

Yeah, understandable. It sounds like Wahlberg does a decent job with the part though.
I'm still looking forward to seeing it, but that's mostly because I'm a lifelong Peter Jackson fan thanks to LOTR.
I enjoy Peter Jackson too. I thought the LOTR series was great and really enjoyed King Kong. That one takes some heat, but I thought it was great. His early work is fun too.

Yeah, Wahlberg can definitely give a good performance when he takes the right parts.
Lord of the Rings is probably combined my first or second favorite movie of all time. I've never read TLB either, so if the biggest problem really is that it doesn't adhere to the book as much as some people would like, then I'll probably really like the movie.

Yeah, probably Return of the King for me too. I recently got an opportunity to watch them again on the big screen, and that one just has so many breathtaking moments. Fellowship and Two Towers are pretty much tied for me. Fellowship is the best adaptation I've ever seen in my life, but the Battle of Helm's Deep is one of my favorite parts of any movie ever as well. As a whole though, the series is EASILY my favorite film of the decade.
I'll probably read TLB sometime, maybe after I see the movie. I tend to enjoy both versions more when I do that.

I was thinking that at first when they announced the ten thing, but not I'm a lot less sure. The way the contenders are shaping up, it's looking like it's just going to be overall more of the same, and I've always thought it would be hard for an animated film to overcome the "if has it's own category" mindset. Of course, it could get in just because so many people have been calling it a virtual lock for so long. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if it just stays in the animated category.

Also, the Best Animated Feature category wasn't implemented until 2001. The chance that one would be nominated for a best picture oscar is slim to none.

12 reviews? 12? That's two few to even offer an indication of how it's going to go, since we'll probably be getting roughly 150-200 more before all is said and done. I'm not saying its going to kill at the box office: the subject material is simply too dark for a lot of moviegoers. But Jackson's name, especially at Oscar time will bring in some cash, as will the source material.

Yeah. 12 isn't a lot for sure, but it is an early indication of where it's headed. I wouldn't figure it would slay the box office either due to it's material either, but someone said it was Peter Jackson like that would somehow sell everyone to rush and see this movie.
When I think of The Lovely Bones (film), I think of Gosling getting fired, production coming to a halt over visual creative differences, and stuff like this (http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/05/01/peter-jacksons-the-lovely-bones-stops-filming-due-to-creative-rift/). I hardly ever pay attention to the earliest reviews because the rest could easily go 10-20% in either direction. That's why I always chuckle when people point out, early on, that something has 100% (Harry Potter, Up in the Air), because there's absolutely no way it's staying there. It's called a critical standpoint. I thought parts of it were at least charming upon a second movie, but this stupid dialogue goes through out the whole damn thing. Its like a parent who uses to much "lingo" to be cool with their kids.
I know I have been a huge defender of that script on here, but I just felt like jumping in and pointing out that it very well may have been the strength of the cast that made it work for me. I just watched Jennifer's Body, and that shit is fucking horrendous.

Who the fuck says movies have to be believable?
Can I say that District 9/Star Wars/Lord of the Rings are shit because they are not believable?
There's a difference. Obviously the characters are placed in unrealistic situations (hence the "fantasy" tag), but the characters are absolutely written in a realistic manner.
Come on, man. It's a fucking movie. If Diablo Cody wants to write "incredibly ridiculous shit", then let her. You don't have to watch it. A lot of people enjoyed it and just because you didn't, doesn't mean that it's shit. There's really no point in spouting off your hatred for a movie every chance you get because it's just annoying.
Once again, I have nothing against people who like Juno. I still think it's absolute shit and that it's absurd that it got a best picture nomination in a year with at least ten better choices, but that's all opinion, as is pretty much everything I've said in this thread. I didn't think it was funny, I didn't like any of the characters, and the dialogue made me cringe. For me, that's absolute shit. For someone else who didn't have those problems with it, probably not.

I'm about to watch The Brothers Bloom.
Would like to watch Brick at some point again too. Brick wasn't what I expected it and I liked it, but didn't love it. Knowing what it is, noir-wise and all, I think I'll enjoy it a whole lot more. I downloaded the novella and script for it yesterday on the website. Love that they put it online for people. Wish more studios, writers, ect., would do that.

I agree, I love studying the script of a movie I really like.
according to RT, it sits at number 69 for films of this year so far (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/top/bestofrt_year.php?year=2009) and unfortunately often films that are extremely well-received don't get nominated.
and I am not trying to be a dick and shake your confidence, just participating to the discussion of the thread and putting forth my opinion
You're fine/right, I would just love to see it nominated more than anything. Its certainly a long shot, but I think it might actually have a better chance than Up.
Are we having a pool again this year?

Just like with The Lovely Bones, I'm not going to set much in store by 7 early reviews, especially since some of the better ones I've read sound fantastic. However, I think it's time to start talking about whats going to happen with the nominees if 2 that have been getting a lot of talk for months are going to fail. From the early reviews, it looks like Invictus is in for sure, though not a winner. Only time will tell with Lovely Bones and Nine, and who even knows what to do with Avatar.
