His part wasn't that big in the movie, so the actor who plays him thought it wasn't worth sitting through the hours of make-up.

alan cumming's a bitch. he and singer hate each other, so after x2 he pretty much decided right away he wanted no part in 3. even when singer left, he didn't want to go through all the make up again.

in the latest xmen video game he does the voice for nightcrawler. in the game, he goes to professor x and bows out of the xmen, saying it's not for him.

they considered neil patrick harris for the part. they shouldve used him, he's probably desperate for money

Oh don't get me wrong, i love neil patrick harris, but he seems like he wouldve been less of an ass about his x-men role than alan cummings was

Actually guys, as I posted in the entertainment weekly thread, he wanted to do it, Fox rescinded the second movie option in his contract, the one for X3. They bought him out, so everyone saying otherwise is incorrect. He actually wanted to do the movie from every interview out there, citing that the make up did in fact suck (Not surprising) but he really enjoyed it and was excited about not working with Bryan Singer again.

For those that are saying otherwise, you are likely using Wikipedia, which as you can tell in the X3 topic, they have no citation, quite often people post things in Wiki's that are untrue and this is no exception.

"Alan Cumming was reportedly uncomfortable with the long hours he had to take with the Nightcrawler makeup, but still planned to return for X-Men: The Last Stand. However, the part for Nightcrawler was so minimal, he felt it was not worth it to go through the long and costly make up process when he was barely in the film, and the character was cut.[citation needed] However, he did agree to do voice work for the character for the video game based on the film."

Note the "citation needed" part. There's a reason why professors and most other scholar do not accept Wiki as a source, and that's because they're quite often wrong. Don't get me wrong, it's one of my favorite sites on the internet, but it sometimes need to get it's facts straight.
