View Full Version : Max Bemis's religious views

I know that Max was a jew but I've heard that he converted to Christianity. Is this true? Some lyrics on the new CD, especially Cemetery lead me to believe it is. Anyone have a link to an interview about it?

It does kind of matter. Is it wrong to be interested about the life of one of my favorite artists? Him converting from Judaism to Christianity is kinda a big deal in his life if it's true. It has totally affected his lyrics for one thing.

He discussed it in the video chat linked from the home page. Check that out if you want his views in his own words.
If I remember correctly, he said that he believes in both Judaism and Christianity...? I don't know exactly what he meant, I kinda drifted during that part. I'm guessing that he values the virtues and morals of both religions or something like that. He definitely didn't convert though. He said he's still a dirty Jew, and that Judaism holds an important place in his life.

At the end of the day (in my opinion) if you're staunch about any religion, you're just plain ignorant.

Well, if she strongly believes in Christianity (not saying that this is right or wrong) she is commanded by Christ to share the gospel with Max. I don't see how it's sad...she would have to hate him a whole bunch to have (what she believes to be) the key to eternity and not tell him about it.

obviously, in the broad scheme of things, it doesn't really matter. but like any other personal issue in his life, it can obviously affect his music, thus making it of some relevance to the fans. like for instance, his personal relationships have played a huge part in his music, and i for one liked say anything better when he was jack hammering molly conely, as opposed to now, as he cuddles his perfectly sane wife. that said, i still enjoy the man's music on many levels, and am more than happy he has found happiness.

So many people are "WHO GIVES A FUCK"-ing, which is stupid. If this is somebodies favorite band and you were a fan of the band/interested in the members who play the music you love, the things they believe might carry a little weight. If you respect the artists you listen to, there's nothing wrong with taking an interest in the belief systems that influence the lyrics.

I've never been much of a wrestling fan, but all your wrestling talk is reminding me of how much I miss playing all the Smackdown (eventually Smackdown vs Raw) games for PS2 with my brother since the start, I think until 2006. Firstly, that Michaels video is of poor quality. Secondly, it's merely of the Titantron video, while Rock's is a fanmade collection of clips, so the presentation is much better with that Rock one. Thirdly, Shawn's song is the greatest! He's a Sexy Boy! It tells you everything you need to know!

Fun fact (that you won't care about): My brother's one character, Crossblade, had the Benoit theme in every game for years. When that whole murder-suicide thing went down, one of our first thoughts was, "Great, what's Crossblade going to come out to next game?"

Ha! It's a legitimate concern.
Actually, when I first heard (as mentioned earlier, I'm a pro-wrestling dork. I don't care for "real" sports, but guys in spandex fake-fighting does it for me, so I subscribe to this online news site and got wind of the Benoit tragedy almost immediately after he no-showed the June PPV against CM Punk), the first thing I thought was "what a selfish prick. Now the only good technical wrestler in the company is William Regal and they'll never push him."
So, honestly, I think it was super selfish on Benoit's part to off his wife, kid and himself because, as mentioned, we're severely lacking in guys with a strong technical/shoot acumen, and really, that's the most important part of that whole deal.
Fun fact (that you shoudl all care about): I'm a terrible person.

(I still think The Undertaker is going to revive Benoit one of these days for a tag team partner.)

Undertaker should revive his face first. He's 44 and looks like he's at least '60. Also, his knees are shot and he's barely mobile. Why the fuck is he World Heavyweight Champion?!
...why am I making serious statements as a reply?

He's the World Heavyweight Champion because he's the Phenom. Duh. He was my favorite wrestler when I was in middle school and knew nothing about wrestling. Actually, that's not true. Kane was. I miss his mask.

Dude's a legend, and he's definitely over and lives the gimmick, in fact, he has this inspired streak from 2006-2008 where he was having the best matches of his career (admittedly, he is often paired with big guys who can't work well, so feuding with fresher talent like Orton, Edge, Batista and Shawn Michaels has provided him with opponents more capable of having good matches). I mean, Batista and Taker stole the show at 'Mania 22. A guy in his '40s and Batista (who isn't great by any means) had so much chemistry, it was amazing.
He faced Shawn at this year's Mania in March and had the best match on the card, then took five months off to hear some nagging injuries. He came back in August, immediately took the belt from CM Punk (a young, fresh-faced, over main-eventer who needs more time to solidify his status and desperately needed to establish his reign as champion) and has been horrendous since returning. His knees are in the worst shape they've been in almost twenty years and he's nearly immobile. He just shouldn't be in the main-event anymore. He'll always be over and close to the top of the card, but his role now should be using his star status to get newer guys over as upper mid-carders and main-eventers, not champion, and especially at the expense of a new main-eventer who needs the rub.
Kane's mask was rad, but that character had become stale. He became an unstoppable monster after loosing the mask initially, but the novelty of Kane regressing to his "indomitable monster" gimmick without the mask soon wore off. He's boring and his in-ring work is pedestrian at this point. He worked a lot harder in 1998/1999 when there was actually a chance he would get the belt and be placed close to the top of any given card. Now, he's just resting on his laurels and doing as much as needed to get by.

What's CM Punk been doing since the loss? Are they feuding now? Something like that could be good for him, but if they just took the title from him and then put 'Taker against other big names, that's lame. (I like CM Punk. He's straight edge and enters to Killswitch Engage. How sick is that?)

On the topic of being off topic, I'm finally getting around to downloading some Sufjan Stephens. (Surprising, I know, since he's both a great artist and a Christian, something which should have drawn me in long ago.) I'm a huge mark for Punk. I've enjoyed him since his days in Ring of Honor (a fantastic indie wrestling league that features some of the best in-ring work in America). I don't know how up you are on the current product, but Punk turned heel and used his straight-edge gimmick to impose a sense of moral superiority over the fans. He began feuding with Jeff Hardy in the summer and beat him for the World Heavyweight Championship, and their program was predicated on Punk berating Hardy for his past (and current, if his current legal situation is any indication) drug addictions. After beating Hardy in the main-event of Summerslam (a TLC match that actually closed the show over a Cena/Orton WWE Title match for the Raw brand), Undertaker returned from a five-month exile and attacked Punk.
Punk dropped the title a month later to Undertaker. Supposedly, Punk was going to retain the title for a while, but a backstage altercation lead to Vince demanding the creative team write him out of the Championship picture for a while. 'Taker, in a tour of Europe, told Punk (this isn't kayfabe, but a real discussion backstage) that if he's the champ, he was expected to "dress as a champion" when in public as he's representing the company. Punk countered by asking "why doesn't Cena have to wear a suit and tie, then?" 'Taker, a longtime lockerroom leader and well-respected, went to Vince and complained, leading to dumb backstage politicing that resulted in Vince deciding Punk was to drop the strap to 'Taker.
It's dumb. Firstly, Punk's always had a, well, "Punk aesthetic." Having him wear a suit instead of studded belts and Misfits hoodies is completely opposed to his gimmick. Secondly, how you dress outside of work should have no bearing on your wins/losses/storylines. He was just getting over as a credible main-event heel, and Vince killed his momentum over something incredibly trivial. Ugh.
To continue the process of humbling by Vince, Punk is currently feuding with...a referee who screwed him over. It's as stupid as it sounds. Punk's one of the brighest stars in the business. Burying him is retarded.

I started watching around 1998, during the boom period. I was ten, and never "grew out of it" after WWE bought WCW and business cooled off considerably.
My favorite period, I suppose, was right after the brand split, when WWE splintered off into a Raw brand and a Smackdown brand. Raw became the "storyline-heavy" show that centered on angles and promos and the like. Smackdown became home to guys like Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio Jr., Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Brock Lesnar, Edge and the Crusierweight Division with cats like Jamie Noble, Billy Kidman, Ultimo Dragon (for a brief period of time), etc. Smackdown became more in-ring centric, with longer matches and more simplistic feuds that uses the in-ring product as the foundation. From 2002-2004, Smackdown was fantastic.

In all seriousness, I slept with four girls in high school and did so out of a combination of a need to pass, sexual confusion, and actual, genuine care for them. Ha. No. Firstly, I never wrestled someone I found attractive. Secondly, your (or mine or whatever) mind compartmentalizes sexual impulses, and that was furthest from my mind in matches where my mind is racing and desperately trying to process the action going on around me. I'm thinking of all the ways to avoid takedowns, being pinned, staying within the circle and being cognascent of my presence that having my hands on funtime sally buttons wasn't really registering.

Makes sense. I was really hoping for some awesome story about how you had a boner(lol) while you were wrestling a guy and had to obliterate him fastlike so no one would notice, but logical works too.
This one time I was wrestling a fucking penguin (Because, you know, that's what you fucking do when you're fucking awesome) and I was in the light-heavyweight division and he was at least in the 220-235 division and I beat the shit out of him (literally, I beat him so hard, he no longer had control of his bowels) while simultaneously fucking three hot dudes.
This is in no way a joke.

Yeah, I was also a jock in high school. I was also a huge nerd too, so, you know, WHATEVER.
I'mma throw your ass in a fucking locker too, bro.

if The Acacia Strain can tour with 3 Christian bands (August Burns Red, Mychildren Mybride and Impending Doom) and not care about religion, then why should anyone else?
I like Story of The Year; All Atheists. I think people are getting way too bent out of shape of the religion (or lack of) of a band or artist.
I thought Phil was actually a pretty strong Christian? He was actually in a Christian rock group before joining SOTY.

The thought of you wrestling a penguin while the penguin is just shitting everywhere brings a smile to my face.

But I like wrestling, and I was partially a jock in high school. Don't tell Cuddleworthy! I've got cred to maintain. Or do. I'm going to shove his lame ass in a locker.
hahaha hes always seemed like the sort of quiet dude who only opens his mouth to express his ongoing view that hes better than all the uncultured douchebags at his high school, only to get shoved in a locker by the chubby dude with the lettered jacket, the backward hat, and the bleached girl that barbie dolls are modeled after on his arm.

Jesus sucks all of the great stuff out of music clearly. Boo jesus, boo.
So let me understand what you are trying to say- Jesus is a bad influence on music.. So how come bands like Mewithoutyou, Anberlin, Thrice, Mutemath and The Reign of Kindo are so amazing? what you are claiming is very closeminded and biased. There are some phenomenal christian musicians out there.
In regards to Bemis, let him believe what he wants.
and sorry I revived this thread. haha.

chill the fuck out. he just wants to know. it's not going to affect how he looks at the band. you're the only blowing religion out of proportion. honestly.
