Battle Royale as in the Japanese film where school children have to kill each other.
It's an awesome film.

Battle Royale, as in the david arquette WCW film?
You mean Ready to Rumble? Battle Royale is a gruesome film about kids sent to an island to kill each other.
I LOVE that Team America is at #5.

Return of the King at 50? Bullshit. Mediocre list, imo.

Weird list. Some great ones on there and some real questionable ones.
WakingTheMisery
11/08/09, 10:33 AM
Really glad they did this list the way they did. There aren't a whole lot of films I haven't heard of and there are some movies a lot of people love that I despise (See: Wedding Crashers, Donnie Darko, School of Rock). I feel like it is a very well balanced list in that sense.
Some greats on there:
Battle Royale
The Squid and the Whale
Hotel Rwanda
Me You and Everyone We Know
Spirited Away
Persepolis
Anchorman is on there, so the list is at least 1% accurate
narcoleptic953

Crash? Really?
Not horrible, but I disagree with tons of them. Never even seen Cache.

Dark Knight at 43? I enjoyed it and all, but it's really not that great. Certainly shouldn't be anywhere NEAR the top 50 films of the decade.

11/08/09, 11:01 AM
Seriously, Team America?
I agree with No Country, though.

This is England is one of the best films ever, never mind this decade.
FueledByRock

I don't see how they can justify putting Team America above Eternal Sunshine, let alone the rest of the movies in that list. Borat is much too high as well.

this presupposes that earnings = cinematic value
battle royale is sick, I think into the wild should be up there

It doesnt and dont try to spin it that way. The Dark Knight was a very great film and Christopher Nolan is a great filmmaker. This film is no exception and it deserves to be in the top 50, even if it is based off a comic book.

who are you to argue "100 best" doesn't mean highest grossing? one can arbitrarily interpret the word "best" to mean many different things...this isn't a list of the 100 movies with the most cinematic value of the decade, it's the 100 "best".

Cache is a great film but I don't think it's the #1 by any means.

well when I think of movies that I would call the best there are several qualities to be considered. Cinematic value is among those whereas its gross is most likely not (and if it it would be one of the last thing I considered)

and I'm really not sure what this is all about. The list has maybe 15-20 films that did well in the box office so I assumed it did NOT mean highest grossing

that's your opinion. it might not be Time's. do they include a reasoning behind their list or are you simply guessing based on your own definitions of what "best" means?

allow me to amend that sentence:

I based my opinion on the films the list includes -- as I said not too many high grossing films on the list

I don't think this is actually a ranked list.
narcoleptic953
11/08/09, 02:07 PM
Are you serious? How..?
It has one of the worst second acts I've ever seen in a such a highly acclaimed film. That's how. And yes, I'm serious. I loved it as much as everyone did the first time, and have dropped a star off my rating of it with each subsequent viewing. It's good for a comic book movie, but even in that area I don't think it was the best of the decade, and the fact it's above some of the stuff on that list (and some of the stuff they ignored), makes me see once again how hopelessly overrated it was.
The top grossing film of the decade shouldn't be in the top 50?
I don't know. Should Transformers 2 be considered the best film of this year because of its gross? Are you fucking serious?

About the original reason: It's the second top grossing film of all time. To say its not at least a good film puts you in a minority of people. I am saying that in this case, the stats behind this picture prove that it is, at least, a good picture.

No, and there are certain things that move into its gross anyways. Seeing how it was a sequel to a decent film that had a high gross, its a no brainer people are going to see it again. Now though I can't say anything critical about the film as I have not seen it yet (and still on the fence on whether I should or not), I can say like in the post above that TDK was not only the top grossing film and possibly the decade (it hasn't ended yet and there is somewhat of a possibility of another picture topping it), but also the 2nd top picture of all time. My logic does fail past TDK, as Star Wars Episode 1 and Shrek 2 are in the top 10, still doesnt mean its a history maker.

I'm glad they put some comedies on the list. Making a list of the 100 most artsy films is what publications usually do when making "best" lists. At least this one attempts to merge mainstream appeal with artistic value.
