this afternoon i found myself wanting to listen to Don't Look Down again, for nostalgia's sake; "Start The Show" was one of my favorite albums in 9th and 10th grade. so i found my copy, as well as their EP and 2nd full-length, and it's what i've been listening to today.

i'd heard Ryan was fronting the band Runner Runner that i see posted about on the news page almost weekly, so i finally gave the band a listen. i listened to every song on their page twice before coming to the conclusion that everything posters have said on news posts about them being sell outs is absolutely true. i don't use the term "sell out" very often at all, i usually think it's stupid and it's applied to many undeserving bands on a daily basis. but what i found ironic after listening to all their songs was that i went back to listening to Don't Look Down.

and guess what the first song that came back on was?

"all the money in the world don't mean a thing, if this heart stops pounding
success without passion is empty."

i now look at Ryan as the singer from Runner Runner as opposed to the former singer of DLD, so i found it laughingly ironic that those words would come out of his mouth.

listening to that and hearing Ben from Armor For Sleep's project in the last week has made me really sad as i watch my favorite vocalists from high school and even today, either stop making music completely (Jason Vena, Jon Bunch, Jeffrey Martin, etc.) or settle for making music that they're seemingly just trying to cash in on.

and maybe i'm wrong, i don't know Ryan or Ben or Gabe Saporta or anyone like that personally, so maybe i'm completely in the wrong here, but i can't help but feeling that so many of my former favorite musicians are substituting integrity and passion for autotune, "beatz", and the potential to make a bunch of money, and it really sucks to think about.

anyone else have similar feelings of disappointment and disdain when they watch their favorite artists distance themselves further and further from the things and the people that essentially made them as-well-known-as-they're-going-to-be in the first place? it's probably pointless to complain about in a thread on AP, but i feel like it's an annoyance that just seems to be getting worse and worse and it's really disappointing to watch happen.

It's not just Ryan, but the guys from Over It. I thought the songs were kinda fun at first, but I got tired of them pretty fast.

I agree with everything you said. Over It flopped on a major, gotta get the money somehow. same thing with Midtown, Recover, and Armor for Sleep, I guess

I agree with you, DLD and Over It were much better bands than Runner Runner. But then again, those guys did that whole thing for a while, and I think they just wanted something new, and something fun. But I do wish they were still making the music they used to.
