I play mostly original acoustic pop/rock (think Guster, The Format, Van Morrison, Sherwood) but I've been playing with a band recently and would like to start playing more electric. I'm looking to buy something used for $200 - $400.

Found a Fender Classic 70's Reissue Strat (Mexican) on craigslist.

What would you reccommend? What would you offer the guy for that Strat?

Figured I'd ask a respectable music community on their opinions.

Sounds great. Should take care of you for a while. Upgrade later.

if you're looking for a guitar between 2 and 400 bucks, I dont know how good of a guitar you can get. but if you're looking to pick up your first electric guitar, a mexi strat wouldn't be bad in my opinion. Not going to sound too great but it gets the job done. I personally would go telecaster. Those guitars seem to fit well in the genre your playing and I think they look better on stage than a strat does.

Definitely go with a Telecaster over a Strat, in my opinion. I think they sound way better and probably would work better with what you're trying to play.

I'd reccomend posting this in the musician forum, where patrickhowell will write you a 3-4 paragraph essay on what to get and why. Buying used is always a good idea though, then you can get moar gear.

Take a look into Agile guitars. I ordered mine from http://www.rondomusic.com/.

I think Agile guitars play much more than they're worth; my friend actually had an Epiphone beforehand, and ended up selling it for an Agile, which was not only like half the price, but played at least twice as good. They do have some tele and strat copies as well, but I'm not sure how well they are in relation to the Les Paul copies, though I've only heard good things about Agiles anyway.

before i presume i know what you want, could you give me a description of the new group you're working with? (maybe based on influences, but genre works also).

One thing I would recommend is going out and trying a few different types of guitars. A Stratocaster and a Les Paul are going to have distinctly different feels, but each strat will fill a bit different from its counterparts. You know your price range, but that sounds like the only thing you've determined about the guitar. Go to a couple of guitar stores and try out 10-12 different models through your dream amp. That will give you an idea of the feel and sound of each guitar.

Mexican- tele's from the early 2000's are supposedly really good, solid guitars. Some people actually prefer them over the american made fenders. Don't get an epiphone fer chrissake...

Mexi strats are great man... at least the newer ones are. I still use my Jimmie Vaughn artist series as my main guitar and I've got nice guitars in my collection.

Don't buy guitars online, that's the worst thing of all time. Every guitar is different, even ones made the same year by the same machine/person on the same day. Play it before you buy it, always.

Edit: unless it's Ryan's guitar. Then by all means, give that man money.

ended up playing both tele's and strats at a local music shop. plugged myself into both a high end VOX and a marshall JCM2000. probably going to roll with a tele...but would love to play more strats since i feel that they may be more versatile?
