We've all heard about the lip syncing controversy being sparked by Britney in Australia. The idea of passing laws to expose lip syncing is appealing to me. I'd feel ripped off if I paid good money to see a band do that. I might as well stay home and listen to the CD.

You can read more about it here: Get Fresh USA (http://www.getfreshusa.com)

I think the audience should know what they're getting into.

What do you guys think?

I definitely agree with this. Hopefully it will give genuine talent the recognition it deserves as opposed to the Britneys of the world.

if i ever went to a concert where there was lip syncing, or the music was just a recording, then i'd demand my money back.

this.

the government doesn't need to intervene and make laws about it. music fans need to shake it up. if they stop going to shows with lip-syncing and stop supporting artists who do it, the industry will get the message. of course, at this point, the mainstream pop audience doesn't seem to be too bothered enough by it.

I'm certain when I seen Tinchy Stryder at Wakestock he was lip syncing parts of his songs. Well pissed me off, cos I know most MC's have two different vocals within the same song, but the usually get someone else to do one half (Dizzee Rascal and Lethal Bizzle both do this).

I fully support this. Obviously everyone at this point knows someone like Britney Spears doesn't actually sing, but it's needed for people who don't necessarily have the huge reputation for not doing so.

Waste of tax money. If people pay money to see a performance, they are paying to see what the performer is going to do. If there's lip syncing as part of the act then that's what you get. The government doesn't need to get involved at all.

MLB Steroid investigation.

That is all.

What's your point?
I don't like the fact that the Senate is doing that either. Baseball should regulate itself instead of the government getting involved. We're in two illegal wars and an economic crisis. I don't want my tax dollars paying for steroid investigations in baseball or lip syncing laws.

Just saying. They already waste money on shit and we can't stop it. Nothing more, nothing less.

If you and enough other people vote for representatives that won't waste money, we can stop it.

At first I thought the same way about the government and MLB thing, but it was eventually explained to me that professional sports are such a large part of our economy that it's in our government's best interest to keep them popular.

Regardless, nearly every other industry is regulated so that you know exactly what you are getting when you purchase it. From food to cars to children's toys, you know where it's made, what it's made of, etc. I don't think we need congressional hearings for music, but a law requiring lip syncing artists to disclose that information as a disclaimer to protect the consumer seems fair to me.

If they're investigating baseball because it is a huge part of the economy I oppose it even more. If the MLB doesn't want negative repercussions from steroids, they should have regulated it internally to begin with. If a company has bad business practices, they should either adapt to the market or go under because they didn't adapt.

Food and toys are regulated for physical protection (at least originally) so that you don't get poisoned because a manufacturer improperly stores their product or something like that. It's totally different from entertainment. People don't get injured by paying money to see Britney Spears fake a concert. If people are stupid enough to pay to see her or a similar performer, then they should be able too, and the industry shouldn't have to advertise that it's fake if it has no legitimately harmful effects.

I think the laws to make them say if it's lip-synched would be a good idea, sure. Then nobody'll be tricked into thinking someone's good.

I think, for the most part, the people who go to concerts where there is lip syncing don't really care. Do the 13 year old girls really care that Hannah Montana isn't actually singing? No. They're just there for the performance. I don't think any of the bands I listen to (or anyone on this site for that matter) lip sync during their concerts. Ergo, I don't particularily care if people like Britney Spears lip sync or don't sing their songs at all in the first place.

Hah, you're a fucking fool if you go to a pop artists show and believe they're not lip synching. I can't believe they're wasting time making laws for this shit with all the problems going on in the world, holy fuck.

Can the mainstream pop audience even tell the difference? Do you think 90% of the people who buy a Britney Spears or Hannah Montana album realize that their voices are mechanically modified even on their albums?

I think that almost any one with a serious interest in music (i.e. most people here) would be able to spot a band lip syncing or using recorded music in a live setting and wouldn't stand for it.

I could go either way: I'd love to see more lip syncing artists at least exposed to the general public, but I also believe taxpayer money could be spent on something better i.e. bringing art programs back into schools.

That's pretty ridiculous, if you don't want to hear that stuff, don't listen to the bands who do it, simple.

i hate lipsyncing and auto tune with a passion if you cant sing please dont make money off lieing Virtually every recording artist uses autotune, so you should quit listening to music. Autotune is used in recording for the most part, not to hit a note, but to tune the frequency within the note. If the frequency is off during a performance, it's not a big deal, however, it's extremely audible in a recording.

This is a good point. Many people don't know. However I think it is the principle of the matter, and as evidenced by those who walked out on Britney in Australia, there are still people (as unfortunate as they may be) that are being duped.

I think it's possible though that the larger acceptance of pop stars lip synching might be spreading to smaller scenes. We all know Millionaires were caught lip syncing on Warped Tour this year. I'll bet they weren't the only Warped band doing this.
