I was baptized and confirmed Catholic. I've been going to Catholic school since the 3rd grade (I'm an 11th grader now), so the ideology of that religion is deeply rooted in my religious beliefs, because it is an everyday part of my life. However, I could care less about the pope, and some other things. So I'm not quite sure what I am. I'm definitly a Christian, and I took this test at Beliefnet.com that figures out what religion you're beliefs are aligned with and I got Mainline Liberal Protestant or something.

no offense, but you shouldn't have to take an online test to determine your religion.

it was only out of curiosity and boredom. I didn't take it seriously. I know no matter what, I'll go a Catholic church for worship, send my kids to catholic school, and follow their traditions as well.

Speaking from experience, I'd say attending Catholic school does not mess you up. Whoever you know that is messed up didn't become messed up soley from going to Catholic school. there has to be other factors.

oh and about schools messing with your mind...
i dont go to a christian school, and would definately not want to. i feel it doesn't allow you to experiance 'sin'.... and everyone sins. and ya to those who believe that. but God said that we would be faced with sin everyday, but at a Christian school, everything would be 'perfect' and you don't get to experiance the world on your own or whatever.

Christian schools dont mess with your mind. You watch too much tv. If anything, it opens to door to discuss controversial topics that we are allowed to debate within the walls of school, with each other, that you can't debate at public schools (at least not at the public schools that I know of). Everyone at my school has different ideals, and looks at Catholicism in a different way.
We study social justice, Hebrew Scriptures, World Religions among others. All of these classes integrate the ideals of compassion, understading, and tolerance. We learn to recognize that people make mistakes, but that we shouldn't turn our backs on them. And its only once a day, 5 days a week. My other classes don't speak of religion often at all. I am by no means a devout Catholic, but I feel like my stay at these schools has greatly benefited me. And they arn't strict, either.

in class today our teacher asked us who we would all like to live next to out of this list of types of people
the person i most wanted to live next to was an atheist medical doctor....my teacher was like why...then everyone laughed... i said because they're a doctor and they could help me if i ever needed help. Then my teacher said so the fact that hes atheist doesnt bother you. I said no. because personaly it doesnt...just because hes atheist doesnt mean hes a bad person.. hes a medical doctor for christ sake he saves peoples lives....no i dont understand why people care about other people's religon or lack of it.....its their own personal choice...just a thought

I don't know about public schools nation wide, but the ones in the area where I am from - the teachers refuse to talk about things, and do certain stuff because of the union they are in, or something. The teachers in my school don't have a union. The teachers can teach us more personally because they can add there own moral and ethical insights, whereas in a a public school, which is funded by the state, and functions under state laws, teachers cannot because they have to abide by certain boundaries in order to respect a students personal morals and beliefs. Also, I had a teacher who originally taught at a public high school, and she was younger, so we felt we could speak frankly with her about anything under the sun, and she would always tell us that she would get fired from her old job for having open converstations like this with us. Again, this is all where I come from.

yea thats true, otherwise the public school teachers would get fired
but then its... pretty biased.. or whatever. only based on Christian concepts isn't it?

i follow the christan beliefs and morals but i dont consider myself christian. i have had way too many bad experiences with the church and i feel a lot of christians are extremely hypocritical. i also dont see how if i have the same beliefs as someone, but since i dont attend a church, im going to hell and they are going to heaven.

i follow a religion of my own creation that merges doctrines from christianity, islam, buddhism, native american spirituality, astrophysical sciences and celtic mysticism. that might not sound as if it works, but it does.
To paraphrase Tillich, religion is the ultimate concern that gives you a sense of ultimacy and grouding in your spiritual life. WHich means that in the end, religion cannot be organized, as each person would hold their own beliefs differently. Even among members of the same chruch you see subtle differences that make a lot of difference in the end.
for all purposes, call me buddhist since that is the path i follow closest. but I am many things, yet nothing at all.
and to answer the inevitable question:
I do not believe in a higher power per se
but I do believe in a higher reality

not to disrespect you or anything, but its been my expirence thaj most people who say that they are agnostic, only say that around religious people, but when with their friends they are more or less athiests

05/01/03, 03:35 PM
well i know that i personally don't believe there is a "god", and i certainly don't believe in any religions, but the difference between aethists and agnostics is that aetheists believe there is no god whatsoever no matter what, where agnostics, myself included, would believe in god if it was proven to be true...not a huge difference between the 2, but there is a difference
evil zach
05/01/03, 03:37 PM
I knew the diference, but just from my own expirence, friends who claimed to be agnostic, only say that when around religious people, the rest of the time they basicly there is no god atall and therfore, its existance cannot be proven

different question:
despite all of these different religions, who believes in a God that is omniscient, omnipotent and benevolent?
if God is omnipotent, can he create a boulder he cant lift, or a man he cant control? Thus if he can he is not omnipotent, but in the first place then he couldnt create such a thing, but then he would be omnipotent.
Do you get it?

05/01/03, 08:06 PM
yeah... i am not saying that He is omnipotent, i am asking other people if they think He is
i understand, but i thought that was interesting. Read it in a logic book

i was raised catholic but quickly grew apart from everything related to religion. i just dont feel like any of it actually helped me or will help me in the future. my girlfriend is mormon on the other hand, so everything revolves around it one way or another for her. i'm basically agnostic towards it all now, i dont believe anything is out there to help me, but there is something out there to help her. kinda wierd ;\

When I was born, my dad was Agnostic and my mom Buddhist.
When I moved to Thailand at age 2, I was thrown into going to Buddhist temples, etc.
For a long period of my life I was Universalist Unitarian with a stronger belief in Buddhism than anything else. Now I am Buddhist. I believe in whatever Buddhist teachings that I want (as that is one of the aspects of Buddhism), whatever I agree with or helps me in my spiritual life.
