personally i dont care that celebraties voice their opinions about the war/ beliefs......only because people around the country do it every day weather it be voiceing it over the radio, talking to people, or even talking about them on a message board here like we all are and none of it effects our success.....
i dont have an article about it, but did you hear what happened with the dixie chicks?....them voicing their opinion about the war and getting into a bunch of shit because they pissed all their fans off....i saw thing on tv about it, and people were burning their dixie chicks merch....thats fucked up

Yeah, that surprised me, especially coming from a country band. It just shows how "conservative" their fans are. But burning merhandise is stupid, especially if you buy it for the sole purpose of destroying it.

its only stupid because the people who are for the war say they want to bring our democracy to Iraq, yet they violently criticize an American for using their right to freedom of speech, which comes with democracy.

Was that directed towards me? I only think it is stupid because they are wasting/destroying stuff. I feel that the freedom of speech is extremely important. Just the fact that those people have the right to do that, makes me proud to be an American.

Because, when you buy a CD/movie/etc you are supporting that celebrity. And celebrities think that just because they are famous they have the right to say things like that.

Freedom of speech doesn't give you immunity from being criticized. It just prevents the government from silencing ideas.

exactly, criticizing is freedom of speech as well. fortunentaly we dont have to worry about making less money if we speak our minds, they do. its a risk they have to take for being vocal, if they were smart they would shut up. if they want to voice their opinion, fine. but when i dont buy your cd or movie, dont complain to me

Not all country fans are out burning or destroying cds. That would be like me comparing all anti war people to the idiots out on the streets of SF and NY City.
Most are protesting, by not listening, not going to there concerts, not buying products that sponser them, and refusing to buy there next album. The fact that the Dixie Chicks insult america and our president in a foregin nation really pissed alot of people off and the Dixie Chicks, like most liberal talking points, will have to face the consequences of there actiosn.

I mean they are stupid because they talk about liberating Iraqis, bringing democracy to them blah blah, which includes freedom of speech. Yet, they make a big deal about someone else using their right to say whatever they want, like they shouldn't be able to. And the Dixie chicks didn't insult America, the main girl just said that they were ashamed Bush was from Texas.

Insulting the president in another nation is insulting america.
And the constitution says nothing about free speach in another nation.
Also so only liberals are allowed to protest? I bet you had no problem with those anti-war protesters, but now that the tables turned you just cant stand it.

no. every american has every right to say whatever they want, whether people like it or not. The people angry at the dixie chicks can voice it if they want. I was just pointing out that their anger is hypocritical. The Boss said it best:
"The Dixie Chicks have taken a big hit lately for exercising their basic right to express themselves. To me, they're terrific American artists expressing American values by using their American right to free speech. For them to be banished wholesale from radio stations, and even entire radio networks, for speaking out is un-American.
The pressure coming from the government and big business to enforce conformity of thought concerning the war and politics goes against everything that this country is about - namely freedom. Right now, we are supposedly fighting to create freedom in Iraq, at the same time that some are trying to intimidate and punish people for using that same freedom here at home.
I don't know what happens next, but I do want to add my voice to those who think that the Dixie Chicks are getting a raw deal, and an un-American one to boot. I send them my support. "

they have the right to say whatever they want, but freedom of speech isn't freedom from critisism. they chose to say something that offended people, and therefor, they have to live with the consequences. the people they offended didn't like what they had to say and decided to boycott their goods. radio stations have to pull their songs if their audience is upset with them because they will lose their sponsors. they have the absolute right to say what they want and suffer no punishment from the government, but if they chose to say something that is offensive to some people, they have to also live with those consequences.

That is one thing the liberals in hollywood cant understand. THey think they should be able to make any ignorant stupid comment they can think of and that "we" the common american should still go to there movies or buy there records, when its really "us" that there insulting.

Personally, I don't really listen to what celebreties have to say anyway. Especally hollywood. They say whatever is trendy. Rember after the 9/11 attacks when they also said shut up and support the president? Why all of a sudden did their views change? Because it wasn't cool to suport bush.

for the hundreth time: because they are pissed because the Dixie Chicks openly criticized the war and the President. They think that the Chicks shouldn't have said that, and had no right to say that. Yet, in the same breath, these people would most likely tell you that it is necessary to invade Iraq in order to liberate the people and bring them democracy - and free speech.
So basically, they want to give Iraqis freedom of speech among other things, yet they crucify the dixie chicks for exercising they're own right of freedom of speech. It makes no sense whatsoever. But if looking stupid makes them happy, protest on.

Ok for the hundreth time..........what pissed most people off is not really what the dixie chicks said but where they said it, in a foreign nation.

What they said is by its very nature contriversial. Just because we have the right to free speech does not mean we have immunite from criticism. Criticism of what people say is also free speech. No one is infringing on free speech by disliking what the Dixie Chicks said. No government action is being taken (which is what the first amendment protects agains).

i dont know man i think it had more to do with the place rather then the words, but i could be wrong, because alot of the actors who voiced there stupid comments have seen the movie shares gone down, so you might be right.
But i still think location rather then words hurt the nation more.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and everyone is entitled to express it as they see fit. And yes, those that wish to criticize it may do so, but to say that the dixie chicks are un-american because they spoke out against the war and the decision of the president, or another example, say janeane garofalo is a "traitor" because she disagrees with our intentions for going to war is ludicrous. These are americans, using their given rights, citizens of a country that prides itself on it's freedoms, and they have been nothing but misunderstood and verbally beaten. how can one hate someone or judge someone so harshly based on that persons perspective, the way they view something. that's what's great about us. we are all different! we all look different act different dress different and we all see the world differently. let people express how they see the world through their eyes. that's the only way we can learn. it doesn't mean you have to change your ideas and beliefs, but you can grow by listening. choose not to be ignorant...
