So I'm going to start learning how to play bass and I want to purchase a good one. Suggestions, please?
Preferably for pop-punk. But I would like suggestions on bass guitars for the hardcore/metal genres as well.

The Fender Precision Bass is a great all round bass. I play a Music Man Stingray which I love, but they're pretty pricey if you're looking for one to learn on.

Probably the best pop punk bass ever. (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Squier%26%23174%3B+-+Pete+Wentz+Precision+Bass%26%23174 %3B+-+Black/8608009.p?skuId=8608009&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=8608009&ref=06&loc=01&id=1208561894744)

Kidding.

But, in all honesty, it's probably not that bad, I mean it is a Precision bass, just not a Fender. That being said, I'd recommend a Fender P-Bass. Affordable, yet versatile.

For Pop-punk i would go for a Fender P-Bass as mentioned before. You could maybe get a way with using it for metal. Usually if a bassist in a metal band plays a Fender, from what i have seen it has been a Fender Jazz. Ibanez has some pretty good basses for metal/hardcore. I wish i could afford a music man.

Good thing I said I was kidding then, right? I just googled pete wentz bass, and it was the first result, haha.
It was the first shitty bass to come to mind.

Yeah, I've had bad experiences with Squire for my electric guitars.

might be as good as the peavey i learned on, just with some scenester art. I preferred boys to men stickers for my punk asthetic.

i forgot to add that the quality of your bass sound live relies more on your amp than your instrument (though the electronics and wood of your instrument make a HUGE difference).

I have a squire p-bass and it isnt too bad for getting started, but if its something you decide to take seriously I would most definitely upgrade

Get a b pass, slap some spb-3 quarter pounds on that and some steel strings and you have the best pop punk bass ever.

my first was a fender squier. it was a beginner's bass and came with an amp for a little over a hundo

Yeah as already said Fender P-Bass, or the Fender Mark Hoppus signature bass if you could find one. It's pretty much a clash between a jazz bass and a p-bass and its great for pop punk, obviously.

If you're learning just get a Fender Squier P-Bass... they usually come in a starters pack, with a little amp, tuner, cable and a strap to get you started. As you get better, you'll start figuring what you like (feel, tone, etc) and can judge for yourself what you want your rig to be.

Probably a fender p-bass or even a fender jazz bass if you're looking to spend a bit more.

Well from what I'm hearing, the Jazz Bass is pretty versatile when it comes to playing different genres and it's comfortable to play with.

What are your opinions on the Warlock basses?

Well I've never used one, but from what I've heard they're heavy, sound weird, and look ridiculous. However my friend did manage to basically throw it against a wall and still manage to play it.

and the jazz bass is pretty much perfect for your needs unless you plan on becoming a bass elitist lol

Hm. Cause I know Emma Anzai from the Sick Puppies uses Warlock basses, and she's amazing. So I was just curious.
But yeah, I might go to Guitar Center and try out the Precision and Jazz basses to see which one I like more.
I always feel like I don't know what I'm doing in there though. Haha. Even though I do know how to play guitar and all of that.
Still makes me feel like an amateur. :hitself:

Haha that feeling never goes away, I've been playing both for a while and I still feel like that. But yeah a Fender P-Bass will suit you fine until you start playing Jaco Pastorius stuff.

Fender jazz or Fender P bass sounds good for any style of music in my opinion

I like Jazz Bases better personally, I just think they sound way better... What price range are you looking at?

If you're going for something cheeper to get started, a squire would work well for that... But if you want something a little higher a Fender Jazz is obviously going to be a step up.

Go to the store and try out a bunch of different guitars and then decide which you think sounds/ feels the best. Different people are going to like different sounds and different guitars are going to sound better/ worse depending on who's using them. It's really all about what guitar you think sounds and feels the best to you.

I really want to play like Flea. That probably sounds cliche but his slap bass is amazing.

Yeah, that's what I plan on doing. For a max, I'm looking around 800.
From what I've looked at, I think I'm going to get a Fender Jazz but put some Precision pickups on it.
