View Full Version : Popular Songs you wish a Band would Cover?

Hey AP Members,

I'm currently in a band that's working on putting together some covers to release before our full-length debut. We want to do some more interesting covers - think the top 40 charts, etc. (Yeah, I know that's not the most original thing ever... I mean, a bunch of people do it, but it's still fun)

So basically, if you could pick any sorta pop/rap/anything song for a pop-punk band to cover, what would it be, and why? We're already thinking about stuff by Gaga, Miley, etc, etc. We've also performed a cover of Britney Spears a couple times.

Thanks in advance!

They already said pop-punk.

It's punk/pop. Think Fall Out Boy's love child with Green Day and Motion City Soundtrack.

EDIT: I need to stop going on myspace and reading band profiles. They either describe themselves as "Completely Unique," "You're Favorite Band," or "The lovechild of <band we like> and <band we like> with an assist from <band we like>." Need to get original on that.

Wow, so there's absolutely nothing original about your band?

my band covered the chorus of TI's Dead and Gone. Check out myspace.com/teamnatemusic and play Andy featuring Justin Timberlake.

It's a fun thing to do and its also an awful realization of how simple pop music is to create. :(

Whatever song you choose to cover should impress people with your musical abilities. Remember this rule of thumb, a cover doesn't have to sound like the original song. Try your hardest to be original after you get the basic structure of the song. Try to think of the way you would write it if this was your song, if that makes sense.

Most pop-punk, alternative, and indie bands write music that is just as simple as what you'll hear on the radio.

how about you don't do any covers and write some songs yourself.

no offense but this is getting to become an annoying and outshined trend in modern music.

Just to address some of what was said,

-So there's nothing original about your band?

I think that we're original. You may not. I don't intentionally try to rip off other bands. I just listed a few that we sound sorta like. Feel free to say it's not original, just do me the pleasure of hearing some first.

-Write originals

^see above where I said "Before we release our Full-Length" (which won't be covers) Just doing this for the fun of it.

Also, as far as simple songs are concerned, the simple stuff tends to do well cammercially for some reason. I don't think it's cool how you can just pull a template and write a pop song, but neither do I think you're looking at stuff like Yes hitting the radio full-force any time soon. (For the record: I like Yes.)

Just my $0.02. I expected some of these comments before I posted this. Anyway, thanks for the actual posts too.

No thanks. It's too much fun being in a band and reading this type of comment. I live for it! [No, that wasn't sarcastic]

You seem to think you are bigger then you actually are, seeing as you think you already have haters.

I was being facetious with my originality comment, since most of your posts have been about how tons of other bands are doing the same things and said the same things you're saying.

As for the simplicity comment: If your band is like Yes, then you're free to bash the simplicity of pop music. I don't really care enough to listen, honestly, but I will give you that.

Yeah. Tone doesn't translate online well. :)

And as for the Yes thing... Not quite. Still a great band, though. By still a great band, I'm refering to Yes... Not me.

I never said I was big. So here's the important question: Why are you being a hater on a smalltime band? I could make a list of several dozen we could go hate together, if you like that we've both heard, that have been signed, etc, etc. Why instead post "Your band should break up" on a thread like this one?

Covering popular songs is tired. I know you said you have a full length coming and this is messing around. But stupid covers that don't even stray from the original at all make me hate bands

That I can understand. When we cover stuff, I try to do like said above and make it sound unique. I agree it gets borring to hear a band pretty much put their singer over a backing track from what they're covering. This whole covering thing is just something to do. That's not to say I hope people don't listen to it or don't like it - I hope they do both. But it's not really what we are.

Different types of bands for different types of occasions.

But anyway, my band isn't a cover band. We're an original band, but we play some covers, and want to pick and release a few while people wait for our full-length.
