View Full Version : When live, do you prefer bands to try and emulate the Cd or mix things up a bit.

I'm going with changing it up. Feels good man...

If I wanted to hear the CD I would listen to it.
It kinda messes you up if you're trying to sing along and they change things around a little bit but other than that improvisation is always fun. An exception to that would be when they're drunk and playing the wrong things, that's a no-no

Often, when a band's CD features really cool unstrumentation or whatnot, the band just shoves most of it on a backing track. I'm not really a massive fan of backing tracks.
Also, bands can often not match the standard they produce on the album. (eg Avenged Sevenfold.)

Depends on the band and how well they can change it up a bit.

I'd like to see them mix things up and improvise, but they shouldn't deviate from the album version.

in my opinion, they should mix things up or add something to make the performance more enticing. if they play it like in the cd, it wont be boring but people will not be surprise at the concert. surely people pay for something good and different in a certain way.

i actually like when the deviate quite a bit. extra verses, new intros, outros, sometimes different instruments or they'll sing different parts over different riffs in the song.
yeah that's just me though. i think it puts more energy into the show

I prefer to just take it as I know it. Green Day are the kings of making their middle 8 last about 10 minutes for each song.. It can get tiresome

Stay close to the cd. But change it up here and there. I think it's fun when bands play certain parts a little different and such. When my band plays live, I like to slowdown certain parts to make them heavier, improvise fills, ect. Very nice. NAHTTTTTT! YESSS!

I generally want things to be harder, tighter, and more emotional than the cd.

I enjoy when they mix it up a bit so long as I don't mess up the lyrics too much and feel like a fool.

mix it up for sure
Portugal. The Man and The Dear Hunter both did so phenomenally last month, hopefully Minus the Bear follows suit tomorrow night.

The Innerpartysystem s/t is one of my favorite albums and when they played it live it blew my mind. Can't wait for them to put out a dvd

i like when bands change it up and add new stuff...but that's only AFTER they can pull off playing the CD well.
like when i hear a fast metal guitar solo played note-for-note live, i am just impressed and would rather have that than having them play a bunch of fast random notes in place of the solo.

It's boring to stick to how the CD sounds. That's why I like live music, is because of the difference.

I want them to play awesome music. However they want to accomplish that is fine with me.

The Venetia Fair does an awesome job mixing things around for their shows :)

i'd rather hear something closer to the CD than try to mix it up too much. like with TMV. i don't want to see 6 or 7 songs over two hours with a bunch of prog guitar noodling.

I like it when they change the music if they can pull it off well and without being boring. I've been to concerts where the songs are exactly the same as the album, and although they're still enjoyable, I'd rather they changed the music a little live.

My argument for mixing it up:

I'd rather them mix it up. If I wanted to hear the album note for note, I'd listen to it. I wouldn't waste time and potential beer money to go see them.
