Hey there,

I am writing an article for my online fanzine of the area I live in on "Most Influental Bands on modern Alternative Rock".
Please no Genre-Discussing now.
For now, with Alternative Rock i mean all: Alternative, Post-Hardcore, Hardcore, Punkrock, Pop-Punk, Indie, Screamo, emo, emocore, etc..
All.

I did not order them according to their influence yet.
At the moment I'd go with:

-The Cure
-The Smiths
-Nirvana
-Joy Division
-Fugazi
-Rites of Spring
-Green Day
-NOFX
-Misfits
-Refused
-Ramones
-Sex Pistols

Please let me know who'd you put in the list? Which Band is missing? Am i wrong with some Band?

Go for it ;)

NOFX absolutely defined 90's punk rock. They are the fucking granddaddys of the 90's so-cal skate punk sound. They did it better, harder and faster than anyone.

Most of the other names mentioned are spot on too... especially Radiohead, Pixies, Smiths, Cure, Nirvana, etc.

As much as bands like the Weakerthans are incredible (my second favorite band of all time), I kind of doubt the influence they hold. They're not even that well known (tragically).

I'm not saying that they didn't have anything to do with it. But about 90% of pop punk bands to form in the last 3 or so years will have either Blink, New Found Glory, Offspring, Fall Out Boy, Green Day or Jimmy Eat World as one of their influences.

A lot of bands that have come through in the past 5 years list Jimmy Eat World as a big influence. Even bands who don't sound anything like them - As Cities Burn, for example, name JEW as the band that all their members loved.

Fall Out Boy does not deserve to be in that list. Neither does NFG really... as they both have styles that are indistinguishable from the plethora of pop-punk bands that Blink, Green Day and the Offspring ushered in.

Fall Out Boy don't deserve to be on the list because they're too recent. If you've listened to anything they've put out in the past almost three years, you'd realize they've distinguished themselves from their peers, the opposite of what you're saying. In time, I think Fall Out Boy, and especially their later output, will be considered high influential in the alt rock world (using the same "alternative" definition in the OP's post).

+Indian Summer, Swing Kids, Minor Threat, Usurp Synapse, Saetia

This is probably the most legitimate list on here. People will never realize how much screamo/hardcore/emo, or that "skramz" bullshit influenced almost all indie rock and modern alternative.

I'm sure a bunch of tools in bands will say that Led Zeppelin and ACDC influenced them the most, but they probably suck and/or play in Nickelback, so it's all good.

That last part made you lose any credibility you may have had; while you're right that those bands were very influential, discounting the influence of Zeppelin and AC/DC is unbelievably ignorant and implying that the only bands that were influenced by them are Nickelback and the like is a generalization that has little factual basis. The truth is that those two bands, in fact, kick ass. Just because there are lots of morons who listen to modern rock radio that wear AC/DC shirts with chain wallets and tribal armbands does not mean that the band is not good. It's cool though, everyone goes through the phase where they listen exclusively to Revolution Summer-esque emo before they realize that some popular music is popular because it's actually quality.

Are you fucking kidding me? Led Zeppelin is one of my favorite bands. What I'm saying is that their influence usually results in shitty bands dude. I am hardly bashing Zeppelin. I hate ACDC, but that's a different argument.

Zeppelin influenced rock as a whole; rock egos, rock lifestyle, the popularity of rock, the loudness of rock, but as far as direct influences to style and creativity, the bands I listed are the ones that I think influenced the sound of modern alternative rock music. Easy dude. I wouldn't be caught dead dissing Zep.

yes but most of the users here do listen to other stuff besides brand new.

but to go with your theory that most users here are listening to bands like brand new, thrice, and other "scene" indie bands - they owe a lot more to early 90's alternative rock than most here are giving credit to.
