It was fake for sure. Come on...MTV had to do SOMETHING to make it look "cooler"

AShannon04

I'm not so sure the stagedive was fake. I'm sure MTV has multiple cameras surrounding the stage, so it wouldn't have been difficult AT ALL to switch camera angles after seeing someone climb up on stage to see what they were gonna do.

You actually think MTV and security would just allow kids to jump up on stage like that?...no way. Especially being that the first 5 rows are usually hired by MTV to make the performances look more exciting to begin with.

SKooT
06/09/06, 09:04 AM
No, the stagedive was not fake/staged. They filmed the awards show lastweek, and had a few cameras on the stage, so the chance of one of them catching a single stagediver and editing the footage in is better than you may think. And you can multiply the chance of seeing it by three, since there were actually three stagedivers and about the same time. They (not MTV) planned it out ahead of time to get up on stage right after the "breakdown". They were all from the AFI Message Boards and Despair Faction (AFI's offical "fan club" type thing).

Hope that set the record straight. ;)

I mentioned in the vma thread but that seemed to die last night: it sounded like davey was censoring himself for mtv during the "take my life" line. Every "life" came out as "haaiiii". I could see him doing this once or twice because of lack of breath or something, but doing it every time, during a line mtv would surely like to play down, made me think mtv had him avoid using the word.

honestly, i thought it was so good i thought they put the audio from the C.D. over it. but then i realized it sounded so real, it was just an amazing performance, the only thing i noticed was that the "hey's!" in the chorus were fake, b/c they were coming out of nowehre and jade wasn't even near the mic. does anyone agree?

ManicanParty49
06/09/06, 09:39 AM
I didn't enjoy this performance. It seemed to try to hard, and wasn't comfortable at all. This song should be the kind of song that you just rock out to. I think Davey's voice, while good during the screaming, was really poor during all the singing as to do his best not to mess up. That's just my opinion though. After the screaming parts, I think the singing got better.

sexualrobot
06/09/06, 09:40 AM
Not bad, I like how they can actually achieve the same sound live as they do on the cd. that's too rare nowadays

FailedSenses
06/09/06, 09:41 AM
I agree... I thought his voice was kinda off. It sounded like he was saying "Take my heart"? I didn't think he would have to censor out that line since they play the music video without taking out that line or censoring it. I expected a bit of a better performance. The stage diver was a big plus though.

flawless? yes.

completely boring? yes.

AFI is hands down the best live band i have ever seen, but this was downright boring. I remember seeing them 4 times one year and each time was better than the last...i haven't seen them since before STS came out and they started playing larger venues, but hopefully this just came across as boring due to the fact that it was the MTV Movie awards and the crowd's lack of real presence...

whatd do you want out of them? in a setting like this the best you can ask for is a flawless performance and they did that - unlike lliterally every other band that plays on tv. Of course you are going to think the shows they did that you went to were better (especially pre STS) because of how intimate they were and other factors involved inactually being at the show. its totally different then playing on tv.

hmmm, I dunno about that. I was paying pretty close attention, and it seemed like Jade was right there every time. There was a little bit of a lag with the audio in the youtube clip, so maybe that's why it might have looked off...

However, since I've made posts like this repeatedly over the years and people still refuse to believe he's not gay, I guess we'll have to keep hearing about it ad infinitum. For those of you who think the stagedive was put on by MTV, it wasn't.

I was one of the other three stagedivers - there were 4 total - and we had been talking about doing it for about a week. The stagediver you saw was my friend Mark, who is in an awesome band that you should all check out. (http://www.myspace.com/futurexprimitive)

The rest of us dove off of the other side of the stage; the left side, from the audience's view. Mark went one way, and security shifted their attention to him, so the three of us went the other way. I actually front flipped, landed on the crowd, and they dropped me. I hit my head on the ground and busted it open. I got picked up by security, along with my friend Shane, and we were escorted out. I was looked at by an EMT, and patched up. MTV Security - REAL security, guys in suits - took our information down and took our pictures. They told us that we were banned from MTV and any future events.

How many people can say that they stagedived at the MTV Movie Awards, and how many people can say that they were banned from MTV?

Davey's singing was so bad.
He would fall flat on almost every note. I watched it with my sister and we couldn't help but comment every few seconds on how bad it was.
And the screaming part? Mediocre.

It's wierd because he usually sounds pretty decent. I've seen them live, and I've watched some live youtube videos. Sounds fine there. But this was shitty for sure.

But I will say that the stage and the entire setup was completely awesome. And the backup "hey"'s were good.

Miss Murder will be the most played song of any of the bands discussed around here by the end of the year. Its accessable to so many different genres giving it potential to just expand on the commercial success they had with Sing the Sorrow

The year's half over, but this album is gonna go Platinum without breaking a sweat.

Anyone have any guesses for 2nd single? I say/hope its "Summer Shudder". That song's the catchiest thing ive heard in a long time.

Ah look, typical ignorance.

What happened to the days of Art of Drowning? Thankfully, they're gone. See, some bands enjoy growing, changing, and maturing as musicians. If you want the same stuff over and over, just listen to the old CDs over and over.

DUR WUT IS IT GREEN DAY?

Honestly, anyone who thinks AFI now sounds like Green Day is a complete fool. I don't think that can even be an opinion, it's just flat out wrong.

Because remember folks, Green Day invented multiple people at once yelling "Hey!" in the background of a song!
