A large number of critics have basically handed the Best Actor trophy to Jeff Bridges already. I personally can't think of an actor more deserving. Thoughts on this? Anticipation for the movie?

Someone compared it to the Wrestler and now I can't unsee it, hate when that happens

Looks way too hokey/overly sentimental. The Wrestler was gritty and stripped down, which added to the appeal.

Why not wait until you see this fall's Oscar bait before declaring what actor is most deserving.

I'm just saying Bridges in general is incredibly deserving, especially considering he's never won.

Retroactively for the Big Lebowski?
I would say retroactively for the following:
1971 best supporting actor for “The Last Picture Show,” losing to Ben Johnson for “The Last Picture Show”
1974 best supporting actor for “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot,” losing to Robert De Niro for “The Godfather, Part II”
1984 best actor for “Starman,” losing to F. Murray Abraham for “Amadeus”
2000 best supporting actor for “The Contender,” losing to Benicio Del Toro for “Traffic”
He has had the unfortunate luck of putting out great performances in years that produced some of the most theatrically famous performances in the modern era. Well, at least two. Amadeus and Godfather were not going to be beaten.
After seeing this movie, I would say it's his turn. Seeing that Rourke lost last year in a very similar role, it might be time for the Academy to dole out the award to a performance that is quiet and suitable for it's time.

Finally got to see this tonight and I loved it. I can't believe a movie like The Blind Side got nominated for Best Picture and this was left out. I loved everyone's performance and Bridges deserves the Oscar in my opinion (though I loved Clooney in Up In The Air). I was really glad they didn't make Colin Farrell's character the typical "up and coming star who spurns his mentor in favor of fame." The respect he had for Blake was touching.

When it showed his reluctance to talk about Sweet in the first interview it seemed as if the movie would go that route, but I liked that it didn't. I also liked the he wasn't Blake's son haha.

Haha, I actually didn't think of that, but I'm glad they didn't go down that road either. I definitely thought the same thing you did concerning Sweet when Blake initially seemed apprehensive to talk about him. I was then pleasantly surprised.
Edit: What I DID think was going to happen with the son had more to do with the end. When Blake was walking outside during Sweet's set, I thought Blake's son was going to approach him rather than Jean. I thought for a moment that they were going to show that, despite Jean leaving him, he was picking up the pieces of his life in other ways; as if he wouldn't need Jean anymore because his son has essentially replaced her. I liked the ending in the movie though.

Well this only came out in the UK last week (5th March).. and I went to see it yesterday, there were five of us in the cinema. By contrast, Alice in Wonderland 3D was packed next door. British cinema is a sad state of affairs.
re: the film - slow-paced, definitely, but that kind of suited the mood. Brilliant acting by both Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal, who I think was a bit underrated in this film.

But she's hardly received any of the hype surrounding this film; she's overshadowed by Bridges. Just read numerous reviews - they'll regularly only give her a passing approval.
