apologies, I am not sure exactly what the question mark is for.
you stated that a player (R. Howard) would not enter the hall of fame by hitting home runs and striking out every other at bat (ie the at bats he does not hit a homerun, obviously embellished). But I submit that Reggie Jackson (a Hall of Famer) did just that, again a bit hyperbolic.
563 home runs and 2,597 K's in Jackson's career.
quick note: this is in now way to suggest that Howard will, in fact, enter the hall of fame.

Back then, Power hitters were just that -- home run hitters. Not many hit for a high average or didn't strike out alot. Now, times have changed where power hitters are hitting .330 with far less strikeouts than they did 20-30+ years ago.

Not that often, but he does lead the team with 60. Adam Dunn only has 69?
He also only hits .230 with RISP
A problem that is consistent with everyone on the Phillies.
What is remarkable however is the number of home runs he hits to opposite field.

i don't think the issue is his boston blinders as much as it is you just assuming he sucks at 1B because he's a big guy who DH's full-time. In actuality, he's been good when he's needed to play the position. Ford's right on this one.

You'd probably defend Mo Vaughn. A .970 fielding percentage is not good. He has 0 range. I distinctly remember him taking a ground ball off the foot. Him playing first is comical.

if by .970 you meant .990 ...then I'll just assume you admit you are talking out of your ass and we'll move on. Nobody is saying he's a Gold Glove 1B, but he's definitely adequate when he's out there. By the way, Mo had a career FP of .988 too, and thats including his last two awful years as a Met. He wasn't a slouch either. They were/are both adequate 1B who were undoubtedly hitters 1st, but didn't kill there teams on D.

The .970 was referring to last year. First basemen rarely get errors unless they are throwing the ball. The only reason it hasn't hurt the Red Sox is because they have a potent offense and are a good team who can make up for it sometimes. Even calling them adequate is pushing it. Mo couldn't move his last two years and Ortiz is getting there.

they kept the ball in front of them and made the outs they were supposed to. neither has/had excellent range, but neither do 1/2 of the 1B in the league. They were solid 1B who didn't make costly errors, that's all I'm saying. I'm not trying to say they were J.T Snow or Derek Lee.

i'm not a boston fan either, but that kid's hatred of boston players is ridiculous. He's an adequate 1B, give it up. It's not like he has to range into the hole to back hand a ball and throw off balance across the diamond.

Even if Ortiz wasn't a good First Baseman, his hitting seriously makes up for it so in the NL he would definitely have a job. He's seriously not that bad..better than Mo Vaughn.

he carried the team for about 4-5 years before Nomar showed up. Even after that he tore it up until he got hurt after the 2000 season w/ the Angels. He was never the same after that. 3 time all star and the 1995 AL MVP.

I don't know why the Mets even went after him. If the injury did that to him, how could they expect him to be that good? He only played one season wit the Mets really, the second season he played only like 30 games.

haha, yeah he got hurt that way (which happened to be his 1st game as an Angel) ..but what put him out for a year was a ruptured tendon during spring training. Then he said he missed the intensity of the East Coast and wanted to go back to the Sox ....he wound up a Met instead.

haha, i'm drawing a blank on what game it was this week ...but did you see where some 3B made a barehanded play on Molina and they acted like it was a webgem, even though it took Molina about 15 seconds to get down the 1st base line and any other guy would have beaten out the play by a mile?
