Yeah, I went with the gf, and we both agreed that Justin Long (the secretary) was the best character out of that whole movie.
Maybe tied with the brother in the a capella group.

I saw it with my girlfriend..
Think seeing this was awkward, try seeing 40 Year Old Virgin with girls and them asking "Does that really happen?" when he's trying to pee with a boner.

it's because you were expecting a comedy, not a romantic comedy. i think vince was very like himself for the most part, but there were just less comedic scenes with him in it

take your girlfriend, but don't expect too many "awwww" moments where you'll hold tight to each other, and at the end don't expect her to want to jump into bed with your right away. but don't not take her

HORRIBLE movie. Vince Vaughn is the only reason this is even remotely entertaining. jon favreau is not funny at all, Jason Bateman is in it for all of 2 minutes, and the rest of the characters are mediocre at best.
I thought comedies were supposed to have jokes. Or romantic comedies were supposed to have love. This movie was uncomfortable to watch - it was literally two people breaking up, and that's it. Awkward, painful...Mildly entertaining at best.

I wholeheartedly agree. The only part I actually laughed out loud at was when Jennifer Aniston says 'my sisters been through a lot' and 'yeah, of dick' is the response. That was hilarious.
But overall, I didn't like it.

C-isnt that the point though? People in love who break up are supposed to be awkward, painful, and uncomfortable to watch, but mildly entertaining.
I will agree about Jason Bateman, however.

I didn't think this movie was that good. I got tired of their fighting all the time, and the end left me thinking all that fighting wasn't worth it. It was fine to watch I guess, but nothing special, imo.

but thats one of the main reasons that i found myself oddly attracted to it, because it was so odd and diffrent. theres no other movie like it, i don't like generic love stories... but they still could have done it better

It's not about it being non-generic, because they were non-generic in a generic way, haha. the movie didn't have anything GOOD about it's deviation from the classic plot, and that's where it struggled.

It wasn't the fighting that made it uncomfortable for me, it was the resemblance to my life. I mean, yeah, sure, I bet it is similar to a lot of guys, but when they threw in the part where he's making fun of the kid over the video game, that hit the nail on the head for me.

Too many of you guys went into this movie expecting a standard boy meets girl, boy breaks up with girl, boy gets back together with girl movie...I thought it was a very good dissection of a bad relationship. And, unlike most romantic comedies, it chooses not to avoid any of the messy stuff involved in a difficult break-up...if you've ever broken up with someone after a long-term relationship, you should have a ton of "Wow, that's right out of my life" moments when you see this movie...much better than it's getting credit for.

I didn't think the movie was all that bad. It was a total chick flick (I took my gf to see it), but then again, Vince Vaughn is hilarious, so it was kinda a win-win situation for both of us.

How does "that's right out of my life" make it a good movie? If I wanted to watch my own life, I'd sit and relive memories...if they're going to be presented again to me, they better be done in comedic fashion or at least in some way that's different. You watch movies to be entertained, not to say "huh, that's happened to me." That sucks. I felt like shit when it happened to me and I feel like shit now watching it. For something advertised as a romantic comedy, that's just awful.

I believe they call it "relatability" or "catharsis".

Then why on Earth do you listen to music? That's fucking retarded, I'm sorry TJ. If you're listening for ANY reason, it's to entertain yourself. Whether it's lyrical pleasure, audio pleasure (catchy/whatever) or background noise, in ANY form it's entertainment.

Lyrical content is a huge part of listening to music, whether you want to admit it or not. Wouldn't you agree that by viewing or listening to a piece of media that showcases experiences (poor or otherwise) you've gone through, you feel better and perhaps not-as-alone? That's what people meant by the Break Up comments and the music comment.

What the fuck are you talking about? Of course lyrics are a huge part of music! Even the deepest lyrics that hit home the hardest are STILL entertainment, dude. It still entertains your mind. So I have NO idea what you're talking about.
I can understand why people would find a movie like this entertaining in a different context, one that was serious and without humor, but when you go into something expecting comedy and leave with uncomfortable awkwardness, that's not entertainment, that's something else.

Earlier you came off sounding like you thought it was foolish to think that people might watch a movie or listen to music that portray negative experiences if you've gone through the same thing. All I'm saying is that I totally disagree with that. Just like music can have a cathartic method, I think movies can do the same thing if a person views a fictional character going through something that is "right out of their life".

No, I meant that in a context of a comedy that is inappropriate and not entertaining. I clearly stated that.

awful movie. they tried to make humor out of fighting and mediocre dialogue and it just came off as really uncomfortable...and that isn't entertaining. i could go on and on about this movie, but nobody should have to settle for this humor. laughs were few and far between. not to mention there was never any chemistry, and it was too uneven. between this, X-men, and Da Vinci Code, this has been a really dissapointing summer so far.

I felt like most of the funny parts were the ones in the commercials. So I saw all the funny parts already. It wasn't bad though. I thoroughly enjoyed it actually. The end was unique. Sort of did the opposite of what everyone hoped for, which was good. And truthfully, thats probably what would've actually happened in real life. Seems more realistic for them to act that way instead of getting back together. Maybe thats just me though.
