more credible? perhaps. better? it only lists american films, and i only saw about two or three animated films on the list. it totally leaves out anime and any other goodies coming out of the east. also, a good film doesn't necessarily have to have historical significance or cultural impact, or even critical recognition. another reason why i prefer the IMDb Top 250 is because the votes are from average every-day people like me, not leaders of the film industry, which may totally lack credibility, but at least i tend to relate to it more.
i think most of those are on the IMDb Top 250, except in a different order.

Yea, those are avg. vote ratings by the members of the site or whatever. I think 'No Country For Old Men' should be higher considering some of the titles above it.

I don't find IMDB's movies to be right. I disagreed on a few of the movies on the list. Not that I'm saying AFI's list is better. I totally get what you're saying about real people's votes and it makes sense, but I just disagree with alot of the things IMDB says about films. Yet I still like them more than Rotten Tomatoes.

The problem with IMDB is you don't always get honest votes. For example, when The Dark Knight came out, not only did it have the extreme current release bias of high scores, but an increase in people giving The Godfather and other classic movies in its way a 1 in order to get TDK to the top, and it actually worked for a while. It's a solid list but hard to take seriously in that respect.

Exactly. That's why I don't believe most of that list. I think there's a bunch of movies that really, just shouldn't be on there.

if you're referring to the number of movies, think about it. if you watched about 15 movies a year since you were five, you would have reached 250 movies (assuming you're 21, which, oh hey look, you are!). that's 1.25 movies a month. how many movies, on average, do you see every month? me personally, i'd say like 2-3. so, reaching 250 movies is easily achievable. of course, you could've watched any 250 movies in the world and still have counted only 51-75 on that list. while that may be the average on this poll, it's highly likely that someone just has amazingly good taste (or they're just lucky enough to have stumbled upon a lot of good movies) and has seen the majority of those films. so no, i don't think it's sad. i think people wasthing their time on mainstream hollywood crap like twilight and transformers is sad. but of course, some people just can't stand watching an oscar-winning film.

it was easier for me to count how many i haven't seen....which was 8
and four out of the eight came out in the last two years. district 9, 500 days of summer, let the right one in, and something else
of course i don't remember what some are even about really, but i have watched 242 of them at some point. i might be nerd.
