They certainly had a strong gimmick/aesthetic, but it was always a novelty and definitely a product of the rave scene in the late '90s/early '00s. Rikishi or Christopher (Grandmaster Sexay) couldn't work the stick to save their lives, and Scott Taylor (Scotty 2 Hottie) was fairly fluent on the mic and a decent in-ring worker (specifically, he was a small guy who was more of a mat wrestler/technical specialist than an actual high-flier which is what the road agents tried to make him into during each of his matches). They always had a shelf-life.
