View Full Version : What Blu-Rays should I buy?

So there are a shitload of blu-ray players for sale this black friday and I'm planning on picking one up. I want at least 3 movies to watch when I get it. What should I get? I want at least one visually striking movie so I can see how the picture looks.

i told my suitemate not to get any blu rays (he has a ps3 not a bluray player) just because they are so damn expensive, but i was impressed when the movies he bought were 300, taken, gran turino, and some other bad ass flick that is escaping me right now

The best Blu-rays are definitely action movies with their amazing picture and insane sound.

But to the op:
Planet Earth
The Dark Knight
Any Disney/Pixar film
Pirates of the Caribbean Series
The Bourne Trilogy
Sin City
Baraka
Spiderman series
Ironman
Those are some that are definitely visually stunning and sound-wise, beyond fantastic. Obviously some of them are your deepest of film, but they will show off BD's power.
Comb these two sites, http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/ & http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/ for things that catch your eye. I frequent them daily - and the writing is usually pretty solid, in terms of reviews. Check it out.

Yeah I haven't seen the blu-ray version. I was also wondering how that would look since it did come out in '92. There is suppose to be a new film coming out soon called Samsara, by the same director, a sequel of sorts.

Not that would make a difference to the naked eye. I mean, some will do pointless shit like have YouTube built into them and Netflix (but now Ps3 has Netflix) but other then that, no. You'd have to be a videophile to notice differences between high-end players. Once you start getting up and over the $300 range, it is all about what firmware it comes preloaded with, the time it takes for the disc to start playing after you put it in, etc.

My mistake. I think I worded it poorly. What I'm wondering is if there are any quality Blu-Rays that run cheaper than PS3s. I wouldn't really need a PS3 for anything other than the Blu-Ray and the occasional game that isn't also on 360, but yet I find it tough to justify dropping say $150 on a player that I've read poor reviews for when I could get a PS3 for $150 more.

Considering they filmed it to be intentionally grainy and kind of rough, the Blu-Ray version still looks great without losing that original rough around the edges look/style/feel.

Nope. Not. As I said before somewhere on here, they are the equivalent of the superior audio cd's that existed in the nineties. They are not going to suppplant dvd's, as that is the idea, just as superior audio cd's couldn't supplant cd"s. Dvd's are here to stay for quite a while. Blu-rays will be gone in a few years. They are already starting to be bundled with normal dvd's because they can't hold their own attraction. Don't forget that Hd-dvd"s already came and went, which were essentially the same thing, just different makers.

The HD-DVD argument is not valid. HD-DVD failed when they lost studio support for the format. Blu-ray doesn't have to worry about that. Also the prices to be able to use the Blu-ray format (HDtv, Blu-ray player) are substantially less.
Also, DVDs and Blu-ray both are coming with digital copies. I think DVD and Blu-ray are looking a similar remaining life here.

I do not disagree with you that DVDs will be around for quite some time. I don't believe that BDs will fully replace them anytime soon, as DVDs and their players are so inexpensive and the quality is good enough for a lot of people. However, I do not believe that they will be gone in a few years. It's hard not to notice that most new TVs that people are buying aren't the old CRTs or projection models of times past... they are flat-panel LCD and plasma TVs that are capable of displaying video in 1080p. Though DVDs look okay on these TVs, I feel that with the increasing presence of BD displays in stores people will realize that they are not getting nearly as good of a picture as they could. Couple that with the 5.1 lossless audio commonly found on BDs and it's clear that with the right setup, Blu-ray is far superior to DVD. As for the coupling with DVDs, it seems to me that studios are doing this because of the lack of compatibility of Blu-ray with all their existing devices. People want to be able to watch movies on their living room TVs, in their bedrooms, on their computers, in their cars, etc. Blu-ray disc players are not yet that common and cheap that people can afford to have them in all these places (and this isn't even a bad thing; it's pretty obvious that a BD and a DVD will not look that different on an 8" screen on a car headrest). Bundling a DVD with a BD is a good sales move because it gives people that compatibility, but also gets the BD in for viewing on that nice new TV where you can actually see and hear a difference in quality. It is pointless to invest in Blu-ray if you're only viewing it on a rather small screen (especially one that doesn't output 720p/1080i or higher, even if it's pretty large).
Also, the comparison with HD DVD is a moot point. The reason they aren't around is that Toshiba realized that they could not compete with Sony for control of the HD video disc market and stopped production of the discs. HD DVD and Blu-ray debuted at roughly the same time, and Blu-ray came out on top.

They are already starting to be bundled with normal dvd's because they can't hold their own attraction. Don't forget that Hd-dvd"s already came and went, which were essentially the same thing, just different makers.
This is all so untrue that I don't even know what to say. There were a TON of people picking up Blu ray players and HDTVs on Black Friday. The format is here to stay, bud. Some movies from Universal are even being switched out and are supplying ONLY Blu rays. The reason that dvds are being packaged with them is so that people have the ability to bring it to a friends house or somewhere on the go that necessarily doesn't have BR yet. They aren't putting dvd's with BR's because they think that BR is dying. That's hilarious.

Cd's prevailed. Kids don't remember all the "new fancy technology" that tried to do them in. Dvd's are the successors to tapes and the exact same as cd's. History is only repeating itself with that format. and Dvd's have only been wholly prevalent for less than five years now. They have a long way to go.

Blu-ray is in the same place that DVDs were at this point in their life cycle, even further along if anything.
Well a BD is basically DVDs with better image/audio capabilities, so of course it's going to prevail. Who would want to buy an inferior quality product? It's like if we somehow found a way to improve audio quality on CDs and charged more for the new breed, eventually they'd win.

Think of a Blu-ray as a DVD2. It's a dvd with more space, better quality sound and audio, and the players have internet capabilities. The market share is increasing every year, and the price of Blu-rays is now equal to that of DVDs, if not only a dollar or two more. I don't know where you see the flaw in the system, but our culture is technologically obsessed. Every guy has to have the "new best thing" and Blu-rays are the new best thing. Obviously it will take a decade or so to REALLY have a huge impact, but so did the DVD. As new technology comes through the pipelines, the demand for it increases.
But oh well, we'll all sit and watch Planet Earth on our HDTVs and I'll send you over a copy of Jurassic Park on VHS. I'm sure you'll find it of great value.

Superior audio cd''s had all that fancy stuff as well. So did mini discs. and laser discs. and all such nonsense that techy people found fascinating. Blu Rays are a carbon copy of all that stuff.

Mini disc was doomed from the start. I'm pretty sure not a single music label embraced that format, and I'm pretty sure only like 50 popular music albums were released on SACD.
Blu-ray has studio support, has a large catalogue and is marketed with every major movie release and in every retail store.

It takes a little while to weed out the "new" fascinations. Just wait a couple years. I wouldn't apply 'permanently' to them just yet.
I just picked up The Nightmare Before Christmas. It looks fantastic. As do all Disney movies on blu ray.

They've definitely made a bigger impact than SACD, Mini Disc and Laser Disks. The only thing I can see beating blu ray right now is full out digital distribution, but considering how crappy internet is here in canada, I don't see that as being a viable alternative for quite some time. Even if it was, I know a lot of people prefer a physical copy to digital anyways.

Just some kid saying that on here does not go anywhere. Let's see a legitimate source, but it is also needs to remembered that dvd's often go out of print as companies shift and restructure, and vendors and retail spaces also commonly change and shift their inventory and floor space, running and changing experimentations and focuses just to do thing differently every now and then.

Pretty sure Public Enemies is going to be blu-ray only when it is first released...haven't seen any mention of the regular DVD version. Could be wrong, but unless you live under a fucking rock is fairly obvious that a) blu-ray is going to be around for awhile and b) it has already begun to be pushed ahead of regular DVD by companies.

All the new BDs have been coming out cheaper than their SE DVD counterparts.

i don't think they are going out of print as a whole. Please don't twist my words around. i have spent years working at both a record store and a movie store. Companies shift and come and go and so do titles. These titles go in and out of print randomly and commonly. Two recent examples, Bam Magera's movie Haggard, now unattainable in stores because it is out of print. but in the next few years will most likely be picked up again. The original Transformers series was available on dvd in the early 2000's and then went out of print for a few years, then the rights were accquired by a different company, and now they are back on shelves. This rotation of in print and out of print happens with dvd's and cd's, so therefore the retail space they occupy shifts to hold other titles. Blu Rays are a fad, nothing more than a novelty for a select group of people to wag their tongues at for a little while. The majority of the world does not care about them, nor will they ever. In a few years we can meet up and see where we each stand.

You don't seem to understand what-so-ever, what I said. Universal is not putting the DVDs out of print, just to recirculate them at a later date. They are switching their production to ONLY Blu-ray. It makes absolutely no sense with the sudden interest in HDTVs and High-def in general in our culture, for people to say "Fuck it, they're both the same price, and one won't look as good on my HDTV, but I'm going to get it anyway." If it's a fad for a "select group of people", then why did I see teenagers, old people, and moms buying Blu-rays players by the handfull when I went to Best Buy on Black Friday. It started out as a tech geek's wet dream, yes, but it has gained mass market appeal, something that the discs of the 90's never truly gained. I don't understand your dire hate for the format and non-acceptance of new technology, but hell, you're defending a moot point. It HAS gained market appeal, you can't just say that it hasn't. BR sales are up over 100% so far this year, and DVD sales are down 7%. Explain that.
Edit: I realized that we are probably arguing with a fake account. There is no way that a 29-year-old is listening to Alesana and All Time Low. There is no way.
