Apparently the injuries arent life-threatning and he's awake and alert.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2480830

"Witnesses told authorities that the player's motorcycle collided with a car near a downtown intersection and that Roethlisberger's head hit the windshield and was bleeding. Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that Roethlisberger wasn't wearing a helmet. In previous interviews, Roethlisberger has said that he does not like wearing a helmet while wearing a motorcycle."

Speaking as a die hard Steelers, this is the worst news I've heard in such a long time in Sports. What a crushing blow. I can guarentee everyone that Pittsburgh is in turmoil.

I hope everything works out okay, and I hope to see a full recovery.

Yeah, I agree. I feel really bad and all....

But, there's still a lot of fault on Ben's part. He didn't wear a helmet on a motorcycle. Honestly, that's so stupid. Motorcycles are already extremely dangerous, but he rides it without a helmet. I knew something like this would happen sometime.

It's still terrible though. I hope he's okay.

Everyone should wear a helmet, he thinks he can't be touched sometimes. This town as well as the rest of the football league were excited to see how Big Ben's career would pan out. He's already won a Super Bowl at his age, this would be such a critical blow to the NFL to see this guy go down. I really hope he get through this and get on his feet again.

The doctors said he's getting surgery for injuries. They're not saying what exactly he's getting surgery on, but that the injuries are serious.

seriously ...his injuries go beyond his head. If his ribs are broken and his lung is collapsed, he deserves it because he isnt wearing a helmet?

some of you people, including staff members, are completely fucking heartless on this one. hopefully the man makes a full recovery because he's a human being who made a mistake but didn't put anyone else's life in danger by not wearing a helmet. I just think it's humorous because it's the Steelers that is happened to. Finally getting put in their place. That's it. I'm not wishing the guy to die or anything. And everything I've heard it's been head injuries, which well, a helmet would have stopped that. And he was warned numerous times by numerous people to wear a helmet. So any head injuries is his own stupid mistake.

It's just funny because out of the whole NFL, all the players, it happens to be him. Everyone laughing at it is taking it from the prospect of the name. No one wished this on him, but if this happened to your least favorite player or who you think is the biggest tool in the league, wouldn't you kinda find some humor in it too?

Then why are you arguing? Since apparently if it was reverse situation you would laugh, why sit here and argue for our little giggle over the situation? Or is it just because he isn't a "criminal"? Which by the way makes no sense to me because apparently everyone is supposed to be perfect in the NFL? And I don't get how that's relevant to the argument because either way you'd be laughing at someone.

latest report says: broken jaw. broken nasal cavity. 9 inch laceration on the back of his head and some knee damage.

early talk is that he dodged a bullet and nothing serious is coming of it. recovery time right now is estimated at seven weeks. but, they're not quite sure how serious the damage to the knee is.

i was dreading a thread on this as soon as i heard about it. and it's basically what i expected.

i wish him well and hope he recovers fully. but i am a little pissed. especially because after winslow's accident last year, cowher sat down with him and asked him to start wearing a helmet.

all in all though, this could have been much worse.

I'm sorry, but I do not understand how someone can feel any degree of joy or have a "little giggle" over someone else's misfortune. Whether or not he was wearing a helmet (One magazine says he wasn't, another said that it wasn't clear) does not matter. Interesting threat on me there.

Criminal thing still out in left field on this, but hey, got you to admit you would find it funny too. Just depends on who it is I guess. Anyone who is stupid enough to ride a motorcycle without a helmet, where your career depends on you physically, after many warnings from well everyone, but you still don't do it, not wishing you to get in an accident, but hey it could happen, and if it does, can't help but have a "little giggle".

I can understand hatred and rivalry. I grew up in Alabama, as an Auburn fan. If you don't know anything about that rivalry, Auburn has been considered the red-headed step-child in the state while Alabama has been the team with all the glory and "12" National Championships. I heard about it all the time. So, I can understand rivalry, I just felt that you took it too far with the "giggle" and so forth. I didn't and do not want an argument. But...yes, he will survive and should be okay, but I still thought that it was too soon and too serious of a situation to make some of the remarks which were made.
"Giggle" for me is the same as a simple "ha ha" I said in previous post. Just my wording of it. As for too soon and serious, I've been hearing about it since it happened cause of where I work (Pro Football Hall of Fame) so I knew that it was all good and what not. Believe me, I was confident in my little giggle, or haha or whatever you want to call the second of slight laughter that came out of my mouth. If it was life threatening, that would be different. But it's not. As for career threatening..... that's another story.

it's nice that you can find humor in another person's serious injuries. You must be a fine human being, or just looking for attention.

Again, I'm not saying I sat here and laughed my ass off or anything, but considering all the times the guy was told he should wear a helmet and didn't, I can't help but find some humor in it when I hear that he's gonna be fine.

If he were fighting for his life I wouldn't have found a bit of humor in it.

That was when my hatred for him as an athlete began. Remember, I think the first game of his junior season, he caught a TD and did the heisman pose. THE FIRST GAME OF THE YEAR. Come the fuck on..

And then he made himself look even better with his "I'm a soldier!" speech. You play football, kid, and given that this little tangent of his was made in a post-9/11 world, it doesn't sit well.

If you could just define douchebag with one person, he's the clear choice.

Hypothetical question:

If you made your career doing something where a helmet has saved you from probably 75-100 injuries....why would you not wear one riding a motorcycle?

I mean, no one knows the benefit of wearing a helmet more than an NFL Quarterback.

On the real note: Here's to hoping Big Ben makes a full recovery for the 2007 season, sucks for such a young, TRUE star (the opposite being Kellen Winslow, who was only a star in his own mind) to get cut down like this, especially after the Super Bowl win.

I'm sorry, but I still feel that even though he will survive, snickering is inappropriate. Some people see it as okay to snicker or say harsh things because he is the Steelers QB or because he may not have been wearing a helmet, but I find that to be tasteless. Yes, when riding a motorcycle, a person should wear a helmet for safety. I just doubt (I won't dare claim knowledge or assume) that most of the people posting in the thread would be saying "Well, he wasn't wearing a helmet, so whatever, I can't feel sorry" if it were a close friend or relative in this situation. I can understand someone saying that it was a dumbass decision on his part or things like that, but to laugh or show no compassion for a seriously injured person seems a bit harsh to me.

i thought about it after my last post. It depends on the type of helmet, since he was riding what is called "the fastest legal street bike" by Suzuki, if he did wear a helmet it would have been one for those bikes not the kind that harley type riders wear.

Let's try in different terms....
Guy gets told repeatedly to wear helmet. Wearing helmet good for career. Still doesn't wear helmet. Continues on for quite a time whole thing. Accident happens. No helmet. Head injuries. Irony my friend, irony. Initial gasp at situation. Find out guy is okay, going to live, doesn't appear to have long term damage. Shake your head, groan, dumbass is learning is lesson the hard way. Followed by, "ha ha sighhhhhhhh that's why you wear a helmet."
that's not irony, that's a coincidence. a lot of people don't know the definition of irony.

p.s. you're a heartless idiot for laughing about someone else incurring serious injuries and who was in no way directly at fault for causing those injuries.

A new twist to the case:

Ben Roethlisberger (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6770) might have been riding without a license to drive a motorcycle when he was involved in an accident Monday. Pittsburgh television station KDKA reported Tuesday that police are checking whether the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback had a license.Roethlisberger was riding this motorcycle when he collided with an automobile in Pittsburgh on Monday morning. Sources told the TV station that Roethlisberger had a license to operate a car but has never had a Pennsylvania motorcycle license. Roethlisberger had a learner's permit to operate a motorcycle that expired March 29 but had never taken the written and driving tests for a motorcycle license, a source told KDKA. Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Tammy Ewin told the station that police would "have no comment on licensing issues" until after the accident investigation.

whatever, it was just an example. You were trying to point out that they were exactly the same which they are not.

"Now though, the person who overeats is an idiot to you, just like Ben is for not wearing a helmet, so that would make them the same thing"

that statement is not logically correct. you are the one with the flawed logic. I simply made an example of a rapist, I never said it was the best example and stated that if think they are the same simply because in both cases they are idiots, then it must be the same for all idiots. My logic was never flawed and I don't see where you see that it was. I didn't agree with the rapist scenario obviously but it was there to prove a point, a point that must have flown over all of your heads then.

Eating badly is not a risky behavior in the short run so in that case your example isn't the same as not wearing a helmet. Not wearing a helmet can have immediate consequences whereas eating a Big Mac at McDonalds will not. So in that case, your example also has nothing to do with not wearing a helmet.

This whole argument is getting really stupid and you people are obviously not getting it. If you want to believe that eating badly and not wearing a helmet are the same thing, then go right ahead and believe it but you are very mistaken. A better analogy would have been not wearing a seatbelt or something to that effect.

ok if you mean same thing as in them both being idiots, then OK, but they are still by no means the same thing. One is a disorder and one is out of sheer stupidity or carelessness.

This is where the rapist analogy came in. Since he said that overeating and not wearing a helmet were the same thing because they came to the same conclusion then someone being an idiot for raping someone else must also be the same thing. New Jersey...home to the lowest gas prices in the US. Plus we don't even have to pump our own.

But anyway back to topic, I'm kind of sick of the media coverage of this. They interviewed Randle El and Ike Taylor for like 10 minutes the other day.

The best thing about the whole wreck:

Bengals receiver Chad Johnson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5483) hopes the accident does not cause teams to impose more contractual limits on dangerous activities by players.

"They took away the [touchdown] celebrations. Now we can't enjoy ourselves outside of the facility? That's not fair," Johnson said.

"If you're going to do it, do it very cautiously. If you're going to ride a bike, ride it the right way. Don't speed. Do it for enjoyment. If you're going to bungee jump, have two cords in case one snaps. I don't ride anything. I just talk trash. That's it."

That's why he's #1 in the NFL.

yeah no way he is #1 in the NFL. He is good but not even #1 receiver in the NFL.

marvin harrison is getting old, and so is T.O. time for someone new.

I'd say its a 3-way tie between Chad, Anquan Boldin, and Larry Fitzgerald.

I say Steve Smith, T.O., and Moss are still the best receivers in football right now but their attitudes get in the way sometimes.

Johnson is definitely up there though.

NJ is in the upper half of higher gas prices. S.C., mizzou, ,tenn, okla, alabama, and the rest of the south are lower

yeah take steve smith out of that group. he's only good because he gets the ball thrown to him 200 times a year. anyone could do that.

oh, really? i didn't know that.

but, i did know that in 2005 he only had 150 balls thrown to him, not 200. of those 150, he caught 103. yeah, 150 is a lot of attempts to one player, but let's compare that to other players.

anquan blodin - 171 passes thrown to, 102 receptions.
larry fitzgerald - 165 passes thrown to, 103 receptions.
plaxico burress - 166 passes thrown to, 76 receptions.
chris chambers - 166 passes thrown to, 86 receptions.
torry holt - 163 passes thrown to, 102 receptions.

and, let's not forget the "#1 in the nfl":
chad johnson - 155 passes thrown to, 97 receptions.

i'm not discrediting any of the receivers mentioned, i'm just merely pointing out that if you want to knock steve smith, you're gonna have to find another reason. cause in all actuality, among the top receivers last season, he had the fewest thrown his way, but yet tied for the most caught.

but shit, anybody can do that.
