Artist vs. Poet - Damn Rough Night
Record Label: Fearless Records
Release Date: December 15th, 2009

Artist vs. Poet returns with their first released material since their self-titled EP over a year ago. The first EP got a great review from me earlier on the blog. This catchy pop-rock EP is a great follow up to the self-titled EP and preview to the upcoming album.

The title track, "Damn Rough Night," is a fun song about the epicness that is turning 21. The lyrics express all the emotions of going all out on that night, including the fun, the craziness, and the forgotten memories. The catchy chorus has been stuck in my head for a while. Additionally, Forever the Sickest Kids, currently on tour with Artist vs. Poet, give some guest vocals in the bridge.

"Gateway" is another song of the similar formula: catchy lyrics and a catchy beat. The verses aren't their best, but the chorus is still great. Rescue sounds like a song right out of an All Time Low album. I mean that in a good way. It's a great song that again follows their formula of success. "To Hell With The Letdown" is a song that isn't my favorite, but maybe it will grow on me. The chorus just seems boring to me. It's not a bad song, but it's not their best.

As said earlier, Artist vs. Poet follows their formula to success. I would love to see them add some diversity, but with a four song EP, that is not important. However, for their full length they need to add some change. These guys have a load of potential, especially on Fearless. Their full-length is probably going to be one of my most awaited albums of 2010.

1. Damn Rough Night
2. Gateway
3. Rescue
4. To Hell With The Letdown

Pop-punk; All Time Low; Forever The Sickest Kids; Friday Night Boys

quite possibly one of the least informative reviews I've seen in a while.

Eehh. keep working. Try to work on the descriptions of the songs. And cut out the lines that don't add anything to the review.

Come on people, try some constructive criticism like Yellowcard2006. Just saying "shitty review" and "review fail" just makes you look like a total asshole.

tWas put on the site, therefore Jason and the rest must have thought it wasn't entirely terrible. And don't think every review gets by. I have several that weren't put up before.

Thanks. I always respect people like you that actually give constructive criticism, unlike most people on this site.

You're like one of those really quiet, clumsy yet genuinely nice guys with thick glasses and messy hair that just sits in the corner, and has a huge crush on the prettiest girl in the class, and constantly tries to talk to her and charm her, but miserably fails as she knocks him down, time after time. And then, he keeps on trying.

Because you seems like a nice guy, who really likes music but cannot convey this into his reviews, and keeps getting knocked by others. And keeps trying.

Of course, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Not gonna lie, this review made me cringe. I can't believe this gets by as reviews nowadays. Jeremy Aaron obviously didn't see this one.
the BIGGEST issue with your writing is that it is SO INFORMAL. You are writing what should be just one notch below a professional review. CUT OUT any personal pronouns that are not anecdotal. "the beat was stuck in my head" is a bullshit line, plain and simple. "it isnt my favorite, but it will grow on me" is another cringe worthy line. Also, your writing style is very choppy and formulaic. You must let the different portions of your review flow together. Add a PERSONAL ANECDOTE if you feel it would apply. Take advanced english courses and writing courses to tighten your style. You need it.
You obviously care about music, and have an ear for reviewing, but you NEED the writing skills if you want to get anywhere with it. Users on this site are usually very positive when it comes to the writing style of a review. If they are calling you out, you're style is obviously lacking. You should get some friends of yours from this site to look over this review before you submit it. I, personally, would love to help you.

This.

However, he could use a lot of work. Needs to focus more on the music and make the review a LOT less subjective. I learnt a lot about his taste from this review, but almost nothing about the music itself.

I'm not bashing, just some constructive criticism.

honestly, stop talking. you're criticism is worthless. cwhit should keep trying, and not give up because of people who like to make up irrelevant metaphors.

I can't emphasise how much you should listen to this guy. As advice, every word here is pure gold.

This is probably his 50th review - this guy ain't giving up. Oh, and it's "your"

it's only his first published review (on absolutepunk at least). and if it is his 50th review, obviously he likes doing it. i think he should continue writing if that's the case. obviously, he has some work ahead of him, but so does everyone who loves writing.

i hope you corrected my error in earnest. otherwise it just makes you look stupid. you need to stop being an asshole.

I've never 'discouraged' him from writing, he just needs to improve his technique (I'm not the only one who shares this view).

you have not seen his blog. This is an improvement from his original stuff, but not by much. He needs to experiment with different styles of reviewing. Track by Tracks get pretty mundane after Track 5...

i agree he needs to improve his technique. and you were discouraging his writing by comparing him to a dorky kid who can't get the girl even though he tries really hard... and also by laughing at him and continually telling him he sucks without offering any advice (unless you count riding in npmshah's wake).

Just a really, really bad band; they're ever so generic.
