crushlustcrash

I have always like different types of music but somewhat i am always drawn to artists and bands that includes some clever twist of words or like writes deep lyrics that makes me think or like somewhat not cliche.

Some of my favorite ones are:

Bright Eyes
Portugal. The Man.
Jack's Mannequin
Eye Alaska
Kimya Dawson
Panic! At The Disco
Kay kay and His Weathered Underground

so yeah show me some magic : )

The Receiving End Of Sirens - their wordplay is insane.
The Dear Hunter - beautiful poetry
Thrice - very clever lyrics
Manchester Orchestra - they create characters that convey emotions.
Wild Beasts - lots of alliteration
Arctic Monkeys - a clever take on culture
Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip - one of the cleverists lyricists out there.

The Format- they can really tell a story. A good one, too.
Same goes for fun. with the story thing. Those two bands are amazing all-around.

Panic! At The Disco?
Really?

well yeah i really like their word play.Ryan Ross is a great writer yet still a joke in terms of vocals and a mediocre guitarist. But yes, pretty good lyrics. I know this band get some hate and all but i really like their lyrics from both albums. But if you're saying New Perspective sucks then i'm totally on board with you.

well i love"Bed" and "In A Jar" but "Gasoline" is damn catchy I can't resist. Yet again, I haven't really listen to the whole album.
But my least favorite would probably be "Vices" hands down.

I have liked Artic Monkeys (totally agree with their twisted take on culture) and Thrice (awesome lyrics)
and I have only checked out 2 new bands from your list The Receiving End Of Siren and The Dear Hunter and I like them both.

Tragically i live in Indonesia and here, buying import cd is harder than buying drugs. I have to make a list of the cds I want to buy a half month in advance before i can get the cds and I already put both bands into the list so now im kinda playing the waiting game hahaha

Yes. If Sublime is considered boring and mundane to you, you don't know music. They were pioneers in the Alt-Rock scene, despite their success coming post Nowell's death. Their fusion of reggae, punk, ska, hardcore, and other rock related genres was something unheard in their era. How many acts do you knwo were truly embraced by Hip Hop, Reggae, and Punk crowds alike?

Cobra Starship on the other hand is totally generic, but just a ton of fun...

A lot of people mistake clever lines for lyrics with actual meaning.
For example, Pete Wentz can write a great pun, but he only wishes he can write a great pun with weight and truth behind it like Matt Thiessen can.

Influence does not equal quality. Sublime wrote bland, boring songs. They didn't do any of those genres well enough to be noteworthy, so why would smashing them together make it any better. Seriously one of the most overrated bands in history.

The Dangerous Summer

I can't even explain why, but they're transcendant for me. My favorite is "I Would Stay" but you can't go wrong.

Also in the running The Hold Steady, Motion City Soundtrack, Bruce Springsteen

No. That's simply ridiculous. Their sound was never bland or boring... that said, I never called them a band with great lyrics (as this thread title states) and I would never make that assertion.

i think roddy woomble is one of the greatest lyricists of this generation. maybe i'm slightly biased as we're both scottish, but his lyrics really are like poetry put to music. his solo stuff, his band idlewild, and his collaborative effort, drever, mccusker and woomble have some really great lyrics.

One of my favorite bands. Didn't look through the first five pages but, here's a few bands I note for their lyricism.

mewithoutYou. Weiss is the best lyricist of this decade in my opinion.
Modest Mouse. Especially earlier stuff. Brock is a genius in my mind.
The Mountain Goats.
The Weakerthans.
Cursive. Tim Kasher writes some pretty vivd, emotional stuff.
David Bazan. Bazan is at a religious crossroads on his latest release, and his lyrics can be interpreted in numerous ways.

When I Die You Can Cut Me Up And Take All That You Please,

Scotch Whiskey Men Of Tain Have Come To Split Your Skills.

Hey, Hey

I really dig Oh, Sleeper's lyrics. If you're into the hardcore/metalcore genre, those, IMO, are some of the best I've heard.

I also really like Deas Vail's lyrics for some reason.

Craziest lyrics are anything by At the Drive-In or The Mars Volta.

I have no idea what Cedric is talking about.

brand new,
madina lake,
eminem,
flyleaf,
underoath,
AFI,

more poppy...
