View Full Version : How are any of these CrunkCore?

Okay, first thread.
Crunkcore, must say, I'm not really a fan, but I still rate it as a genre of music.
People say that crunkcore simply doesent work.
Crunk is pretty much shouted raps. If rapcore has worked in the mainstream, logically, "Crunkcore" should as well, if not better.
Now I can see where Brokencyde is coming from when they call themselves crunkcore, whilst i would still rate it as a hard rap/screamo? fusion, I think they have sexual innuendo or drugs in every one of their songs, so I will happily say it is crunkcore.
However, what does piss me off is when bands like 30H3!, Breathe Carolina, Attack Attack, The Millionaires, and Hollywood Undead are put into this.
3OH3!, they are a mainstream electronica/rap fusion. Where is the hardcore influence? Crunk? What the hell, there is barely any influence of crunk whatsoever in their music. They are a pop/electronica band that moved away from any hardcore influence long ago.
Attack Attack!
God knows what the fuck they are, they sound like deathcore one second, to metalcore the next, to some sort of Maroon 5 cover, and then they start hopping around like crabs. Somewhere in the middle some idiot picked up the use of autotune and decided it was crunkcore. There is no crunk whatsoever in their music. Also they know how to play instruments.
The Millionaires.
Oh come on, CRUNK?, just because they act like sluts does not make them crunk. I also fail to see any hardcore punk influence on them either. If you manage to find any hardcore influence, dont mix crunk into it, call it slutcore or something.
Hollywood Undead?
Rapcore. barely any crunk influence, no autotune, some of their songs have meaning, they know how to play instruments.
Breathe Carolina?
Pretty much Electronica, with some screamo influence. I cant see any crunk.
Point of thread?
Why is there such genre confusion over these music groups, or has crunkcore pretty much become the shitcore basket?
In my opinion, any group that is considered crunkcore should have just been thrown into the rapcore basket, and people should stop trying to assort bands into certain genres just so they can criticize the genre as a whole.
Thank you :)

The Boston Phoenix described it (Crunkcore)as "a combination of minimalist Southern hip-hop, Auto-Tune croons, techno breakdowns, barked vocals, and party-til-you-puke poetics."
Crunkcore has been heavily criticised by music magazines such as Kerrang!, who called it "possibly the worst genre of music ever created."
John McDonnell, writing for The Guardian, said that crunkcore "sounds like a Chamillionaire track performed by a teenage Slipknot tribute band." He closed the article with "Oh God. I've suddenly come to my fucking senses. What was I thinking? [Crunkcore] is the worst thing to happen to music since Katie Melua's "Nine Million Bicycles" in Beijing."
Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low told mtv.com:
"There used to be that whole mentality of ... it had to be 100 percent genuine, or no one would take it seriously. But that whole line has been blurred now ... You have all these kids coming up on Disney pop who then discover bands like BrokeNCYDE, and they're like, 'Oh my God, they said fuck!,' and they fall in love instantly, because it's their version of '80s punk."
August Brown of the Los Angeles Times writes:
"The prerecorded backing tracks and juvenile misogyny of bands such as the New Mexico screamo-crunk act BrokenCYDE are affronts to traditionalist punk values." "This (sic) 'Albucrazy'-based band has done for MySpace emo what some think Soulja Boy did for hip-hop: turn their career into a kind of macro-performance art that exists so far beyond the tropes of irony and sincerity that to ask 'are they kidding?' is like trying to peel an onion to get to a perceived central core that, in the end, does not exist and renders all attempts to reassemble the pieces futile."

Yeah they have a breakdown like every 20 seconds literally, hence one might momentarily assume they are trying to have some sort of death metal influence.
But then the influence just flies away when they do the crab hop, then start trying to c-walk to synth.

i think you should put less emphasis and importance on what genre these bands fall under.
Crunkcore is a retarded term just like most genre's and their names. I'm guessing they all fall under the "umbrella genre" of "crunkcore" because most of the aforementioned bands go on tour with each other (or have gone), kind of like Thursday being called "emo" because they toured with bands like Saves The Day (both awesome bands :D)

Screaming incorporated correctly into music- eg Underoath- makes screaming worthwhile. When Attack Attack! or any of that other scene shite scream for screaming's sake, I press pause. As for crunkcore, I agree it doesn't necessarily require it's own sub-genre for a group of bands hastily joint together in equal levels of mediocrity. Breathe Carolina are a guilty pleasure, though.

Heh, we're not really trying to be unique.
The thing about crunkcore is that it's such a loosely defined genre; in practice it's basically anyone with danceable beats, lyrics about partying and sex, and at least occasional use of autotune who has a few scene fans. Screaming and rapping help but don't really seem to be necessary.

lmaoo, its ermm, unique
Well by definition it would be a combination of Crunk and Hardcore elements :P
What you have there is definitely similar, but much different to the whole Brokencyde/Dot Dot Curve sort of thing :)

Ain't hard to be unique in a genre which is fairly new, loosely defined, and doesn't have that many bands.

true, i've seen a couple tracks floating around that you would still define as crunkcore, but considerably different to brokencyde.

As long as you've got some autotune, some rapping, and a little screaming...
I'm not sure if this newer track is crunkcore, though. It's got hoarse rapping, but no screamo-sounding screaming, and natural-sounding sung vocals with no autotune or other effects...

All core bands are not musically worthy in any respect.

I have a guilty pleasure for dotdotcurve, just saying.
