View Full Version : Actors/Actresses Who Play The Same Role In Almost Every Movie

I was thinking about this the other day. What actors and actresses seem to have the same role in almost every movie. I know there are some actors out there who play a role so much we think that is how they act in real life. So here is what I thought of (three obvious choices if you ask me):
Ryan Reynolds - edgy, witty cool guy with some smart quirks (i.e. Waiting, Van Wilder)
Michael Cera - awkward teenager with some love-related issues (i.e. Juno, Superbad)
Ving Rhames - scary, powerful black dude who no one wants to mess with (i.e. all those zombie movies)

Urban Legend: gets beat up. does he die? only saw bits
Thin Red Line: I think he dies?
Fight Club: bleach blond beatxdown
Girl, Interrupted: No idea, sounds like an awful movie
American Psycho: Get's fucking owned
Requiem For a Dream: on top of being an overrated movie for scenesters/hipsters, something bad still happens to him
Highway: Goons after him to kick his ass, what a surprise
Panic Room: boom headshot!
Alexander: plays a gay lover, pretty much is equal to being beat up. (I KID I KID.) I forget what happens to him in the movie, but the real character he played got an infection and fucking died. YO, SOUND FAMILIAR YET YOU STUPID FUCK?
Lord of War, Chapter 27, Lonely Hearts, Mr Nobody.... I have never even heard of these four movies? are they even relevant? I know Lord of War has Nick Cage in it, who also plays the same role in every movie...so I can only imagine Leto playing his same role also.

Morse was a soldier in the Rock and the Hurt Locker, FBI agent in Extreme Measures and the Negotiator, cop in the Green Mile and 16 Blocks, a detective in House, and it was mentioned he was a cop in Hack. Theres a theme there.
Durand plays the thug/muscle in a lot of movies/shows, Mystery Alaska, Wolverine, Lost, 3:10 to Yuma, Walking Tall and if thats not enough, he will play Little John in Robin Hood.

Josh Hutcherson. Seen 3 movies with him, and he always plays a "cool" kid who's some sort of semi-bully illustrated by the fact that his character is a jerk to his family members.
and, if he doesn't change it up soon, Christian Bale
No, it has nothing to do with you being biased. The comment of Leonardo Dicaprio playing the same character is ridiculous. What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Marvin's Room, Gangs of New York, Catch Me If You Can, The Aviator.
He's not even my favorite actor, but seriously? This guy shouldn't be anywhere near this list.
I'm still waiting for him to try to prove it.

Wow, Jackie Chan ftw, can't believe I didn't think of that.

one of the best answers so far IMO because it's true but not obvious. And you're right, far from a bad thing.
Definitely Denzel Washington and Bruce Willis. They almost always play some depressed guy with family problems and then have to save them or someone close to them. Nonetheless, Bruce Willis is a bad ass and Denzel Washington is amazing, one of my favorites.

let's recap
I'd say he counts.
you're an idiot, these have nothing do with the type of personalities he's playing.

These other ones though that I've seen Crank series, Transporter Series, War, Death Race, in all these he's almost the same character.
oh aside form Snatch, he def belongs in this thread. Same exact character. OH and add Italian Job to the list of samesies.

11/24/09, 06:46 PM
it is completely different. if johnny depp got the shit beat out of him in every movie it doesn't change the fact that his character is wildly different from each other film after film. this isn't "actor/actresses who play character with the same outcome in almost every movie" thread.
Ellen Page (Witty, sarcastic teen)

That was the first thing I saw her in, so it was alright. Plus it had Jesse Eisenberg, whom I love. However, every other movie that I've watched her in it's the same...I can't take it anymore...
Have you seen Speak or Into the Wild? She's actually quite good in both of those. She has a lot of the same mannerisms, but she's also a pretty capable actress and puts a little bit of nuance into both of those roles.

Truth. If you want to confirm your opinion of her, check out Zathura. Decent little kid's movie in which she is woefully miscast. If you're looking to jeer, that's a good place. And The Messengers is an awful movie that she almost keeps afloat, but it's so silly that you might get some chuckles out of it too.

I don't get how people don't see the Johnny Depp thing. I might not fully agree, but there is some truth to the matter. Maybe not in every single role of his (like some of the examples mentioned), especially with Public Enemies being his most recent one, but all his whacky bits are pretty comparable.

Still disagree. He's got so many roles that are so different from eachother that all it seems like you are doing there is lumping the slightly more quirky/surreal roles into one category. They aren't actually similar roles or characters, it's like saying "Gilbert Grape = Roux = Donnie Brasco" just because he plays "normal people" in those films. Each one is different.

the Johnny Depp one was funny, BUT he does have one thing in common in MOST of his movies that no one mentioned....he is always speaking with an accent. he hardly ever uses his actual speaking voice. i havent seen his most recent movie but i think Secret Window he used his actual voice, and probably some of his earlier stuff as well. but for the most part he has an accent.
