Baumbach's latest
Meet Roger Greenberg (Ben Stiller): a dysfunctional 40-year-old at a crossroads in his life. Roger wants to “do nothing” for a while, so he agrees to housesit for his younger and more successful brother, giving him a free place to stay in L.A. While in town, he tries to reconnect with his old friends and band mates but times have changed, and old friends aren’t necessarily still best friends. Greenberg starts spending time with his brother’s personal assistant Florence (Great Gerwig), an aspiring singer and herself something of a lost soul too. During a series of embarrassingly awkward romantic encounters, we sense that perhaps even someone as irascible as Greenberg may have found somebody who is prepared to appreciate him for himself – if he would only stop critiquing Florence’s techniques in bed. Over the course of several weeks, we watch an uncertain and wonderfully vulnerable courtship play out, and learn how funny, and terribly unpredictable, love in the modern world can be.

Looks promising. Hopefully he rebounds after the complete disappointment Margot At The Wedding was.
The Squid and the Whale is one of my favorite movies, and he helped write Life Aquatic too, which is my favorite Anderson. Kicking & Screaming wasn't bad either, but I didn't love it. I think I'm missing one or two of his others.

He also cowrote Fantastic Mr. Fox, I'm trying to think has Stiller done anything like this before?

And I haven't seen Fantastic Mr. Fox so I can't comment on it. But I'm sure it's amazing.

Kicking and Screaming is my favorite of his. This looks good so far, nice to see Stiller in a role like this.
The ony film I've seen that he's directed was The Squid and the Whale, but I loved it. This looks good so I'll probably see it/catch up on his other work as well.

As a movie, Greenberg lacks drama and appeal (it is the least enjoyable film of Ben Stiller’s career)
Oh Armond White, hoping to go into New York City next week to see this

I heard they wouldn't let him into the first critics' screening of this because of his unfavorable treatment of Baumbach and his films in the past. Will read the review once I see the film.

The Squid and the Whale is wonderful but that turd Margot at the Wedding is enough to make me leery for Greenberg. Kicking and Screaming is kind of the in-between movie. I like it but don't love it.
Hopefully we get this one soon though. I'll for sure see it.

I am guessing that people see a movie with Ben Stiller in it and automatically think it'll be some sort of wacky slap-stick comedy? And they end up watching the movie with no real knowledge of plot or what the writer/director has made in the past.

Haha, I know you hate it. Ive always been a Stiller fan except for TT, and I'm a huge Gerwig fan. And Baumbach is great. And I'm really enjoying the supporting cast a lot. Ifans and Duplass in their small roles impressed me, too. I dunno man and I see myself in Greenberg in a few ways. I'm rambling bc I'm typing from my phone, so I'll shut the fuck up now.

Although I do agree The Squid and The Whale was better, I think this film effected me more. I don't understand people saying this film went nowhere. Every act basically jumped between three different locations, but the story wasn't exactly one of action. It was one of emotion. The overall theme caught me and held me tight. I've watched it four times and find it more moving each time.

i think it only failed to have a story because it didn't try in the first place. it just paints a picture of an irritating yet intriguing and at some level even relatable character and his relationships with a couple of other people. i admire the film for what it tries to be and what it succeeds in being.
not bagging on you or anything. i'm fully aware that the love/hate ratio towards this movie is like 1/10, and i'm unfortunate enough to be that 1.
