View Full Version : movies you hate that everyone else loves
i saw this thread:
http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=589932
and thought it would be interesting to talk about movies that we hate that everyone seems to love for some reason.
i'll start:
the dark knight: i don't necessarily hate this movie, it was alright. but people freaked out on it for some reason.
most coen brothers movies: i don't know why people seem to love these guys. all the movies i've seen by them are boring. even though there is great acting, the stories aren't interesting and don't hit me emotionally.
quentin tarantino movies: i've said it before, but the only thing i like about any of this movies was Sam Jackson in pulp fiction. all his other movies try way too hard, and don't seem to amount to anything.
most tim burton movies: this guy is just repeating himself over and over again. same visual style, same actors, etc... dude is wicked boring.
okay, i can't think of any others at the moment, and i know i used directors more than individual movies, but whatever.
let the hate begin.

The Dark Knight, definitely.
I feel like I have to say that I loved every Coen brother, Tarantino, and Burton movie I've ever seen.

The Godfather movies probably top that list for me. I don't exactly hate them but I think they're incredibly overrated, along with most gangster movies out there. Scarface comes to mind too. Such an awful movie never saw the appeal.

I was never a fan honestly. It's been years since I watched them. I don't think they're bad movies at all; just don't agree with all the praise they get.

the only gangster movies i like are Goodfellas and Donnie Brasco.
either way, i still need to re-watch the godfather movies. i saw them forever ago when i was too young to appreciate anything.

Signs. I fucking hate Signs.
That movie sucks.
It has become a cliche to say that this movies sucks. Most people do not love this movie. In my opinion, back when it was in theaters, it was a hilarious hidden gem; i even saw it twice in theaters. But it got a lot less hilarious when everyone started to quote it and when it became popular when the DVD was released. And now, everyone says they hate it. It was a pretty low budget film, it wasnt meant to dazzle.
Signs. I fucking hate Signs.
i love this movie. or maybe i should just say, i love alien movies and phoenix in this movie.
Let the Right One In remains the worst movie I have ever seen.
how come?
Kill Bill
Let the Right One In remains the worst movie I have ever seen.
I wouldn't go that far, but I didn't enjoy it. I heard so many good things about it and my reaction was "..really?" Sooooo overrated.

I have to kind of second this. It was okay, but not as awesome as I was expecting. Over hyped fer sur yo.
Also I absolutely hated Little Miss Sunshine. Alan Arkin was the only worthwhile thing, I thought.
i enjoyed little miss sunshine, but it wasn't nearly as good as everyone made it out to be. steve carell was awesome though.

So far I sort of agree with The Dark Knight and Atonement. Didn't hate TDK by any means, but it's the most hopelessly overrated movie ever made and the second half is genuinely bad. I fucking hated Atonement, even though it was a really well made film. The tracking shot on the beach was incredible, I just hated the story, and the ending made me want to kill myself.
Others:
Hard Candy: Worst movie I've ever seen in my life, bar none. And that includes Artificial Intelligence, Batman and Robin, National Treasure 2, the Spidermans, and Kazaam.
Juno: Hated the script, hated the characters, and Ellen Page just pisses me the fuck off (see above).
Revolutionary Road: In a word, painful.
Spiderman 1 and 2: Tobey Maguire was horrible choice for Spiderman, the villains suck, Kirsten Dunst couldn't act her way out of a paper bag, scripts are formulaic and atrociously written.

We could do a whole thread on overrated best picture winners/movies that shouldn't have won best picture. Forrest Gump and Titanic are both terrific examples.
Definitely agree with whoever said Across The Universe. That movie was unbearable.
That movie was laughably bad. Whenever they would throw some random thing in to fit in a sing (Strawberry Fields), I got dumber. By the time Bono showed up, I was done.

Twilight. Duh. Every single movie, every single book, every single fucking Facebook status reading 'OMG!!!! EDWARD IS SOOOOO HOOTTT!!!!' makes me die a little inside.

Then don't use that phrase in a disparaging way.
I was using the term as an alternative for "stupid" and I just wanted to make it known that I'm not trying to direct the term in a defamatory way. It's a flaw in my diction. I mean, I could've easily just said "stupid" but that's just a lapse in judgment on my part, although, I did explain in parentheses what I was not trying to imply.
Lesson learned, I suppose.

whether it's good by definition is irrelevant. the thread title didn't ask "what movies that are well crafted do you hate regardless". I didn't enjoy it, just like I may not enjoy a certain band if I don't enjoy that genre of music, it has nothing to do with the fact that it may or may not meet up to the standard definition of "good".
