US troops opened fire on a crowd hostile to the new pro-US governor in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul today, killing at least 10 people and injuring as many as 100, witnesses and doctors said.
The incident overshadowed the start of US-brokered talks aimed at sketching out a post-Saddam Hussein Iraq and could ignite anti-US sentiment sparked in protests in Baghdad and at the talks in the southern city of Nasiriyah.
Witnesses reported that US troops had fired into a crowd which was becoming increasingly hostile towards the new governor in the northern oil city, Mashaan al-Juburi, as he was making a pro-US speech.
"There are perhaps 100 wounded and 10 to 12 dead," Dr Ayad al-Ramadhani said at the city hospital.
The Pentagon, meanwhile, said it was not yet prepared to declare victory after nearly four weeks of war on Iraq, but US commanders expressed hope the main stage of hostilities was over with the fall of Saddam's hometown of Tikrit yesterday.

Hey, Stamin, can you link me to where I can see that the Iraqis fired first? I read the whole article and what i got is what i posted. And i realize that the crowd was "hostile" but we are supposed to be helping these people and stabilizing the nation, nut killing them. And also, over 100 people were shot. So even if you are right, I doubt all 100 people opened fire on US troops.

have you heard of stones? yeah, thats the way they get rid of cheating wives over there. they stone them to death. the stone is the weapon of choice, why not use it on the us? I doubt they fired one shot, but do you really think the US just shot them for no reason? Doubt it.

its simple...don't throw rocks at guys with guns, or at the very least, don't stand near guys who are throwing rocks at guys with guns.

the "masacre" of 7 people you mean? i believe they should have been shot. they were drunk and they started it. the british soldiers were probably scarred young kids who didnt want to get stoned to death. you got to see each person as an individul and not a country. sure GB was our enemy, but I probably would have sided with the soldier at that point. Honestly, what would you do?

yeah. because being stoned to death by snowballs is such a frequent and realistic means of death.
and as for the Iraqi's laying into a hige crowd with automatic weapons is not justified unless the crowd is similarly armed and hostile. i thoughtt you wanted to liberate these people not kill them.

I hate to break it to you, but they did throw rocks at the British Soldiers in Boston, not just snowballs. And regards to liberating these people, I would pick the life of my fellow American over an Iraqi any day, call me fascist or crazy, but it just seems that someone from your own country is a tad more important than someone from another. What did you expect them to do? Allow them to throw rocks at them? Doubtful. And if they are throwing rocks at people, that is assault with a deadly weapon, by the masses. Thats a criminal offense, I have no sympathy for them.

Ok, emo, if a group of hostile people who dont like you are throwing stones at you, and you are holding a gun, what are you gonna do? Talk things over, bullshit. Tell the truth to on what a logical way to handle this would be

while the question was not aimed at me, i would say you first make an effort to get yourself out of the situation, since they are protesting you. firing on the people that you're there to liberate seems like a last resort, not a first course of action.
