I enjoy watching movies. I like everything about them from their stories to the directing to even the special effects. But what amazes me the most when I watch a movie is when an actor doesn't merely act his role, but instead he becomes his character.

What is even more fascinating is that these actors don't choose just one type of character, but a multitude of them, from the strangest, oddest of characters, to the most disturbing and horrifying villains. They are able to become their characters again and again, regardless of how different they are.

I want to create a poll that lists some of the actors who do this, but I'm going to need your help. Here's how it's going to work. Simply post in this forum with the name of an actor (or, if you want, actors) that you think should be in this poll. In about a week or two (depending on the number of replies), I'll go through the thread, select the ten most nominated actors, and create the poll.

Here are my nominations:

Daniel Day-Lewis (My Left Foot, Gangs of New York, There Will Be Blood)
Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, Pirates of the Caribbean)

same deal, except actresses this time. same rule as most quotable movies thread, limit 5 per poster. go.

ellen page (hard candy, the tracey fragments, juno)
natalie portman (v for vendetta, closer, garden state)

I'll second natalie portman, but ellen page can fuck off - she was terrible in hard candy (i did not find her character believable at all). I'd also like to nominate kate winslet (eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, titanic, little children, the reader, revolutionary road).

I definitely second Kate Winslet. Love her.

I nominate Rachel McAdams.

i like that you've at least seen hard candy, btw. i hate people who love her just because they've seen her in juno and nothing else.

I think part of my dislike for Page might have been because of the writing in hard candy rather than her delivery, but it was difficult to seperate the two. I saw Hard Candy before Juno and was quite excited about it because it looked like something I'd enjoy, but it didn't quite meet my expectations. Not that it was bad, but more that it was just ok rather than great.

And yes we need more nominations.

Amy Adams
Anna Paquin
Keira Knightley
Helen Bonham Carter
Angelina Jolie

I love her but she pretty much plays the exact same character in every movie

i wasn't aware anna paquin was a good actress, i just thought she looked really hot in x-men 2.

and yes, i love zooey deschanel, but she doesn't have that much acting range.

sadly, i've yet to see anything of amy adams.

Not many of these kids mentioned really deserve much of a nomination. I'm in love with Zooey, but she's not a great actress. The only other one I'd agree with would be Reese Witherspoon - she was great in Walk The Line. So I'll second her.

Sorry, I use the word "kids" to just refer to people in general. I even call my parents kids.

In New Zealand, college = high school. We just say university.

Ok, hmmm back on topic. What are some other good actresses? How about Juliette Binoche? She is incredible in Three Colours Blue. Other films she's been in include Chocolat and Paris. Oh, and if we're going to go french how about Audrey Tatou (Amelie, A Very Long Engagement)?

ellen page (Hard Candy, The Tracey Fragments, Juno)

Ellen fucking Page off course. She's smart, funny, gorgeous, interesting and one of the most perfect women in the world.
Juno is my favorite film of all time, so another +, Hard Candy was very intense, so another + and the Tracey Fragments was a great, engaging movie and she did a truly amazing job in it...so +. She's about the only actress who's movies I'd watch just because she's in it, aside from Zooey Deschanel. And Oscar nomination (should have won).
So, yeah. Ellen Page:inlove:.

Oh, and I'd like to nominate Anna Kendrick.
Oscar-nominee for UITA, acted her way out of the creepy cardboard acting of Twilight and Rocket Science is one of my favorite films and if you've seen her in that, you know she's got insane talent.

We don't need to nominate Meryl Streep. She's got enough awards as it is.

Can't stand Ellen Page, not sure why. I would nominate Tina Fey just cause I find her to be insanely hilarious
