I want to write some poetry, but I don't know where to start. Any ideas?

About lyric writing but it's helpful for poetry too(They're basically the same): http://ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=256864

Read lots of poetry too. I recommend Robert Frost, but I'm partially biased.

yeah you should really have something in mind, because in my experience, if i dont have something to say, then i dont really look for a way to say it.

I think that's bad advice guys. We'll be getting more shit in this forum.

They're right, of course, but read that thread I linked first. Because, well, it's no help having something to write about if it reads like shit.

I generally write when I have some strong emotion or something's happened. I don't really decide to write, it just happens. If that makes sense.

Which is why you're a good writer.

Thanks :) I was thinking about this today, actually. Someone asked me why I write, or how, or something, and I'd never actually thought about it before. It's just like a natural thing, I suppose. Mind you, that doesn't mean I'm any good at it :)

im not very good at it at all, in fact i usually cant stand most poetry, but i went through a phase this year where my shitty works actually helped out a lot.

With poetry, I either love it or hate it. But I don't actually write as much poetry as I do stories, which is weird. But for me, it's just my instincts, when something goes wrong, to write it down in one way or another. It helps me.

I wouldn't want to write for a living because then it would be something I have to do. Also, I don't like sharing my writing because it's usually very private, and has a lot of myself in it. I wouldn't say I'm a good writer, but it's definitely a natural thing. Like, when people say something I'll immediately know how I'd write it down, I don't know if that makes sense. I just express myself better with pen and paper - or a keyboard and computer screen - than I can any other way. And sorry if I'm talking too much about myself :)

It'll be a while. I take ages to write. And I don't have any inspiration right now.

Fact:

My song 'Yes, I Mean No' was written as two songs to begin with. The entire first verse's lyrics were freestyled and then I wrote them down.
And the chorus was written when I was bored in class.

'With You, I'm Safe' was written when I was listening to 'Your hand in mine' by Explosions in the Sky

And how amazing it is...

Check my post in the "Best songs of 06 thread" Though my post is something of a joke in itself
