I think you'll definitely add Armistice to the list if you give it a few good listens. Not as good as their self-titled but a really great song-writing album.

And I personally You Can't Take it with You. At first it's really different sounding, but the more you listen to it the easier it is to see the progression between the albums.

Well there's a thread every year for posting your top albums of the year so I don't see why he needs his own. I guess it's fine if other people post their own but he titled it My Top 10 Albums of 2009. Whatever.

Oh, why not...

1.) Thrice - Beggars
2.) Bradley Hathaway - A Mouth Full of Dust
3.) David Crowder*Band - Church Music
-> Project 86 - Picket Fence Cartel
-> Relient K - Forget and Not Slow Down
-> Cursive - Mama, I'm Swollen
-> Regina Spektor - Far
-> The Fauns - The Fauns
-> Coconut Records - Davy
-> Hands - Creator
-> Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle
-> So Long Forgotten - Things We Can See and Things We Cannot
-> Kelly Clarkson - All I Ever Wanted

...and likely more. Blah. Some of these are recent listens for me, so it's too soon for them to be properly ranked. Also, their are other releases that are likely on par with some of these for me. I thoroughly enjoy the top half of the list, but it's nearly impossible to say "favorites" beyond that.

Hey Vinh, A) What's the deal with SOTS? I need my Vinh-approved music reviews, and B) Give me shit for my list.
Oh hi.

A) Due to a hosting snafu, we've now moved to http://sunonthesand.com (http://sunonthesand.com/). Also testing out a new design. As for reviews from me, that will be put on hold for a while given the decade coverage and all the editing involved in addition to writing of my own, However, a handful of new recruits have published On The Flys if you're interested.

B) You'll have to wait until we publish our 09 lists.

Ah, I see. I've kept butting my head against the wall at ".net", I never thought to try .com. I like the new layout. Maybe a bit more color, but yeah, I think it's clean and a bit easier to navigate.

My bad, I thought someone here would have announced it in some capacity. Glad you like the layout.

Well, our original schedule has been pushed back by 2-3 days so we still have top 10 retrospectives beginning Wednesday for every weekday until we reach #1, then honorable mentions (5 non-list records per staffer) on the 16th. Hopefully, we can have the 09 content ready by the end of that week. Don't get too excited though, it's only 25 albums. Not my call sadly. Perhaps we could throw in some individual mentions for this year too.

Don't get me wrong, I like This Will Be the Death of Us...But only to a certain extent, I seem to just listen to the first half of the album (up until The Few That Remain) and then I turn it off. And I enjoyed the albums I posted much more than TWBTDOU. That's just me....lol.

Oh, why not...

1.) Thrice - Beggars
2.) Bradley Hathaway - A Mouth Full of Dust
3.) David Crowder*Band - Church Music
-> Project 86 - Picket Fence Cartel
-> Relient K - Forget and Not Slow Down
-> Cursive - Mama, I'm Swollen
-> Regina Spektor - Far
-> The Fauns - The Fauns
-> Coconut Records - Davy
-> Hands - Creator

Biggest disappointment of the year for me.

Wrong: Daisy came out this year. ;-)

Really, though, I bought it at the same time as The Ugly Organ and was completely underwhelmed at first as a result, but another user convinced me to check it out again, and I absolutely love it now.

How long did it take you to appreciate it? I gave that record so many chances and couldn't get into it. I thought From The Hips was a great single though.

I was very bored with it the first time with no desire to return, checked it out again on the user's request, liked it by the second or third listen, and loved it by maybe the tenth. My favorite songs are probably "Mama, I'm Satan," "Caveman," and "What Have I Done?" so, if you want to give it another shot, maybe start with those. It's not as immediate as, say, "Some Red Handed Slight of Hand," but I really enjoy the lyrics.

I've actually started liking it a lot since seeing them open for Brand New. When I first checked them out expecting a good "indie" band, I was bored to tears, but once I accepted that Andy's lyrics are highly overrated, I found METN to be a fun alternative rock album. There are some good jams on there. Also, he alludes to "Come Thou Fount," one of my favorite hymns, in "The River." Instant Tim points there, lol.

Ha, well, it's a loud rock album, and I'm a loud rock kind of guy at heart. It's not particularly good, but it's tight, and I like it. Andy might have some lame lines, but at least he doesn't rhyme "duck" with "luck" and "stuck," and "down" with "clown" and "round."

August Burns Red - Constellations
Say Anything - Say Anything
Dance Gavin Dance - Happiness
As Tall As Lions - You Can't Take It With You

Skylines Calling=Living Like This

I agree with you. All of these records smoked 90% of the albums that people have posted. It's probably because we're a little older. Although that Dangerous Summer album was somewhat of a guilty pleasure. "Weathered" is just such a good song.

I almost forgot that the Appleseed Cast album came out this year. It really is just a beautiful record.

New as in released this year? Hmm, well I've been digging the latest by CFCF (groovy electronica), Pink Mountaintops (airy rock 'n' roll from the dude in Black Mountain), jj (that Swedish girl from general has probably told you all about these indie-poppers), Destroyer (ambient disco EP!), Simon Joyner (Leonard Cohen meets Will Oldham), Os Mutantes (Tropicalia pioneers) and Doveman (because I'm a mopey bastard).

What about on your end?

Very very cool list mate, I'm loving the Tom Waits like you said I would.

ps. Check out the record Humbug by Arctic Monkeys, with all the stuff you listed you will love it I'm sure. Josh Homme from Them Crooked Vultures/QOTSA produced!

Hey, thank you so much! I'm SO happy you like Tom Waits! Victory for good music!

I think you'll definitely add Armistice to the list if you give it a few good listens. Not as good as their self-titled but a really great song-writing album.

And I personally You Can't Take it with You. At first it's really different sounding, but the more you listen to it the easier it is to see the progression between the albums.
Really? I thought it was better than their s/t. I actually would rank Armistice in my top 3 albums of the year, if not #1.

ha I suppose it's been a bad year for you in terms of overrated albums.

Not really. Because I don't care for an album as much as other music enthusiasts or the press doesn't mean I find it overrated (but that's a whole thing), nor do I care what others think of records I merely find decent-or-good, as opposed to the hype they receive. Hey, they dig something much more than I do (or at all, as I don't care for Merriweather Post Pavilion), that's great. It doesn't bother me and why would it?

I'm sure, by having Callahan's record as my number one and having praised the hell out of it since its release (I believe in April), they could argue that I'm massively over-hyping that record. It's all relative.

seriously.

I thought I mentioned it. Huh. Well, I'm too lazy to check, and my list was really vague anyways, so oh well. To answer your (possibly rhetorical) question, it's obviously because no one else has liked it enough to list it that high. I don't really blame them, either. I like Regina Spektor a lot and loved about three songs on that album, but I'd say she definitely shines best when given a rawer production and showing off more of her childlike imagination.

I agree with you. All of these records smoked 90% of the albums that people have posted. It's probably because we're a little older. Although that Dangerous Summer album was somewhat of a guilty pleasure. "Weathered" is just such a good song.

I'm having a hard time justifying how "older" means "better taste in music," especially when you've just admitted to enjoying The Dangerous Summer, which is Jimmy Eat World-style powerpop with opaque, meaningless, overly individualized lyrics and terrible rhythm guitar and vocal production. Plus, and I'm sure you must have just missed this, the guy you're quoting has We Shot the Moon on his list as well, which is just a really shitty copycat of SoCo with even sappier lyrics (if that's even possible). Again, not seeing the correlation...

I mean, the production isn't what got Person L on my list, nor is it the component keeping it at #10 on my list. It's simplistic melodically and rhythmically while still allowing the percussion instruments to shine, and I've always been a fan of Kenny's voice. I preferred the lyrics on Initial, though I'll readily admit that his lyrics aren't mindblowing to begin with, and the production on "Changed Man" is absolutely horrendous. Also, there are no real standout tracks, which is both a plus and and negative in terms of relistening to it. I can see where you're coming from, but I was mostly just getting after that guy's self-entitled response. I never claimed that my opinion was superior to someone else's, especially not on the grounds of "being older," and it just really irked me to see something like that.

You mean the guy that produced a ambient techno/indie folk hybrid containing of two 12+ minute long tracks that has a vocal range and tone somewhat similar to Brian Wilson? No. I mean, having the Beach Boys as an influence is one of the better bands to have, and I have no problem with borrowing their style heavily (Merriweather Post Pavilion is essentially a reworking of Pet Sounds with synth pads, sample loops, and drum machines, and I love it), but come on. You could have given the first four tracks of Monster Head Room and told me they were unreleased Beach Boys songs, and I wouldn't have questioned the honesty of that for a second.

Well, I disagree. I don't think Ganglians has borrowed from Brian Wilson anymore than Panda Bear has. Plus, the Ganglians S/T and recent 7" sound a lot different than Monster Head Room.

Haha it's ok. I'm in the UK though, and she's relatively unknown over here so I don't get annoyed by her or those Jonas fellows. As soon as she becomes famous over here though, I'll probably hate her. Out of curiosity, is she one of those that's in the tabloids everyday over there?

Nah, too young. The worst thing the press has on her is that she may or may not be dating a Jonas Brother. But other than that, she's a sweetheart.

Seeing as how this has devovled into a list thread, I ay as well throw it out if for nothing else than someone will discuss their mutual enjoyment of some of the selections (it continues to change because of the massive stockpile of albums I've been giving attention to, but this looks to be the finalized list for the year, at this point):

1. Bill Callahan -- "Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle"
2. John Zorn -- "Alhambra Love Songs"
3. Fake Problems – “It's Great to Be Alive”
4. Thee Oh Sees – “Help”
5. Nick Cave & Warren Ellis -- "White Lunar"
6. Jim O'Rourke -- "The Visitor"
7. Kurt Vile – “God is Saying This to You…”
8. Ben Frost -- "By the Throat"
9. Black Lips – “200 Million Thousand”
10. Screaming Females -- "Power Move"

Honerable Mentions:
Dead Man's Bones -- "Dead Man's Bones" (a month ago, this was at number two, until some more spins of a lot of other albums and a lack of "staying power" hindered its standings, but it's still near the top ten at eleven)
Christopher Tignor -- "Core Memory Unwound"
Allen Toussaint -- "The Great Mississippi"
Theophilus London -- "This Charming Mixtape"
Rameses III -- "I Could Not Love You More"
