I went over to my friends house the other day where everyone hangs out and once I had the chance to use the laptop, I put on some music I wanted to listen to at the time which consisted of something like (DOOM, Deas Vail, Jesu, Envy on the coast, Polar Bear club, Fireworks etc.) I know they constantly say their not close-minded but all they did was complain the whole time no matter what I put on they would have something smart-mouthed to say and they would all attack me as if I were playing Cher or Brokencyde or something horrendous...I understand everyone has different taste in music but I would never be so condesending as to say someone sucks or to shut the F up I can't understand how someone would find this music that irritating that they would need to yell and scream about how terrible it is and even to insult me directly about how my taste in music is horrible when that's just some music I listen to I like a lot of other bands they like and more.....anyone have advice for people like this? I know they like other music besides screamo but jeez who put them in charge of what's good or bad! whoever did had poor judgement haha

You're 18? Really? It's called 'knowing your audience'. I love Gallows, but I tend to skip over them when it's my turn to work the iPod at my job.

I hung out with a group of about the same 8 people from elementary school to high school and they never listened to the same music I did. Two of my best friends here in college absolutely hate what I listen to and give me shit all the time for it. For example, one of my guy friends absolutely hates Circa Survive and thinks Anthony Green is the creepiest person alive. It was really annoying at first (esp when we went to see Circa & Thrice live) but I learned to laugh at it and now it's a joke between us. Whenever he hears a female singer he'll say "oooh! It's a new circa song!" or I'll call him when there's exciting circa news and he'll get fake excited.

If they're your friends, you have to have at least one or two bands in common, so stick to those. Or listen to bands you'd think they'd like too. And if they give you shit, just deal with it. They're your friends, they're allowed to give you shit.

I had a friend who hated on just about everything I listened to and she claimed I had no "diversity" in my tastes. Then, when one of our other friends was around who liked a lot of the same music I did, she suddenly loved all of it. The next time she tried to say anything to me, I called her out on it and told her to shut the fuck up because she has Alanis Morissette on her iPod.

I say raise the bar with music that's still brutal, but better. Misery Signals, Mastodon, etc. Eventually they'll realize that there's more to life than cat-strangling shreiks and shitty breakdowns. [Props for trying to win them over with Deas Vail, EOTC and PBC though. Good stuff.]

I had this happen to me...it was a while back and all of my friends, who I generally share the same music taste with, bitched and wouldn't shut up about how awful my music selection was when I put on "Cross out the eyes" by Thursday. At first I was pissed cause it seemed they were ganging up on me but that was before I learned that not everyone has to like the music I like. You have to cater to the audience and make the music enjoyable for everyone. If you are open minded, then you will be able to tolerate their music and avoid confrontations. Keep your music to yourself, jokes on them, they don't "get" Polar Bear Club.

Jesu is all kinds of awesome.

And to the poster- This kind of music seems very popular to everyone on this site, but in actuality, most of the bands on this site are small-time compared to what's played on Top 40 radio. As much as it sucks, you're gonna deal with a lot of people who don't wanna listen to the music you like. I've dealt with a lot of people not enjoying music I've put on, and sometimes you gotta bite the bullet and compromise, cause it's better than hearing people complain about what you put on. But look at it this way, in the long run, it's better to enjoy what you like rather than being someone who's just enjoying what's being pushed on the radio or MTV.

I get that you think that by knocking on an AMAZING artist, you're being all cool and hipster indie whatever, but Cher is amazing. Your friends are obviously right when they complain about your shitty taste in music if you hate her. By the way, complaining about brokencyde is a really hypocritical move when you're trying to say you're open minded about music. I bet you dont like Prince or Michael Jackson either...

Cher...horrendous...someone really should have just exterminated most of this generation while they had the chance. She has drag queens impersonating her, do you have that? I dont think so.

im totally going to say that to the next person i see listening to radiohead, just to see what happens

Ok.

haha niceee that's pretty much true just in a different way, they can't listen to bands without breakdowns or some kind of screaming they only care about what's popular etc.

you mean tuffxcore?

...get used to breakdowns, I'm writing them into country as we speak.

I have the same kinda friends in different circles. When a band like 3Oh!3 or ATL gets big, and are my friends are just hearing about them for the first time..... I just tell them I've known about them for months/years. Shuts them up.

omg hahaha this happens to me allll the timeee and I'm just like dude I heard this song a bijillion times before this is only like your third time your still obsessed because this is so new to you

yeah dude i know exactly what you mean.
The thing is i find myself telling my friend who only really like shitty top 40 dull shit that the song he puts on are boring but clearly to him they're not. You've just gotta accept people have their own tastes and they can't really be changed, just be content that there are so many people on sites like this who would probably appreciate your tastes.
But i do find it odd how there are like two types of people, 1 people who just like whats catchy and id find soooososo average and 2 people who actualy explore and develop a taste and listen to albums.
crazy

everyone is 13 for a little while but I eventually people grow up...
I like both types its just a question of how well respected a musician/band is for what and how they do it I suppose

Don't worry about most of society only listens to top 40 shit, and it's easier to just listen to what they want when your with them then try to convince them.

... everyone says their open minded, but change or difference is always the catalyst

Edit:: Your best bet is to find some form of common ground, and go with it.

yeah I have the same problem with my friends. If it's not on the radio it's awful and they won't listen to it. I never say anything, and we just never use my ipod. Because of that and others like my friends and his, I've had to listen to Fireflies and million and three times and so much breathe carolina and so much stuff like that.
You just need to turn on the radio, and tune it out, you'll never get them to listen to anything unless it's a single.

Buried. Quit trying to show off how hip and cool your musical tastes are to an audience that doesn't care. When I'm hanging out with a bunch of friends I think Deas Vail is the last thing I'd pop in.

Cannot get into this band and I have no idea why. I really liked The Summer of George EP, but their full lengths have done nothing for me.
hmm start with their ep the redder the better, imo "boxes" on chasing hamburg is one of their best songs they've written.
I would say chasing hamburg is their most accessible album

I completely understand. There are times when my friends and I are together and listening to say, Copeland or some respectable band and they say "omg this sucks!" And then they go on about how Taylor Swift is a real cowgirl/country singer/best of all time or something. I just brush it off and laugh. I used to fight them on it, but it's just not worth it anymore. (Not saying Taylor Swift is bad, she's doing well for herself and makes decent music, but in no way is she country. she's a pop artist.) Everyone has different opinions and likes/dislikes, it's just a shame that they can't realize bands like Copeland may not be their thing, but they should atleast respect what they're doing and know enough to not say "they suck."

But I actually made my very close-minded friend a mix of some bands that I thought she might like and some new things to listen to, other than top 40 pop radio and mainstream country. She liked Valencia and that was it. At least it's something.
