I haven't actually worked out the details on this but I know people who have done it and they seemed to work it out. Basically I write a ton of music but have too much going on to start a real band. I think it'd be cool to get some songs together though, no pressing rush or anything.
Anyone that would do this would need some decent recording equipment and the ability to get a decent sounded recording of their instrument/whatever onto the Internet.
Someone writes a song, say in tab or midi or something. Midi works best I think since you can hear all the instruments together and everything and get an idea what is supposed to be going on. Passes it to everyone else and they learn their parts.
Then someone records. Probably make sense to record drums first, then pass it around and everyone else records their part based on that. Wouldn't necessarily need to do drums first though provided there is a set tempo and everyone sticks directly to it.
Combine, do a little mixing and whatever, and voila... Internet band.
