The Ready Set - Stays Four the Same

Who?
The Ready Set, formed in November 2007, is the work of Peter Witzigreuter, a 19 year old high school graduate in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The one man alternative-pop songwriter writes and records all instruments himself, with a knack for creating beats and hooks that hit a large fan base. Stays Four the Same, Witzigreuter's latest EP, boasts three ~3:20 - 3:40 tracks that feature upbeat melodies and electronic backings.
How is it?
Starting off the EP is the title track “Stays Four the Same”, which brings you in and introduces you to Witzigreuter’s style; in general it’s a textbook alternative-pop that was decently executed. It only took a couple spins through the record before you hit the obvious problem; despite its length, only around ten minutes, there’s far too little variety. All three tracks are of similar tempo, length, range, meaning, and structure. I started to wonder really how many tricks Witzigreuter had up his sleeve when I started picking up too many instances of auto-tuning (though generally one is too many), similar piano riffs, or reused hand claps, just to name a few. When I listen to an EP, I want to hear how versatile an artist can be. What Stays Four the Same showed me is that The Ready Set has a tendency to only write songs in a certain direction. However, I don’t think the target audience really cares.
